It Seems Some Pollsters Find Kentucky's Schedule Lacking
An article in the Courier this morning points out some of the pollster's findings.
Kentucky basketball's strength of schedule draws many critics, the article aforementioned is interesting.
There isn't anything that can be done about it but some of the polls are showing the Cats played the weakest schedule out of the top ten teams.
The lack of quality in the Louisville, Carolina and Indiana teams weakens the over all schedule strength
SO, is Kentucky the victim of having a weak schedule and will it effect the seedings in the tournament?
One even mentions us with the UNLV teams of old.
Tell us your opinion.

We really didnt expect the schedule to be this weak when it was made.
However, we cannot do anything about it at this point. Usually a non-conference schedule that includes UCONN, Louisville, Indiana and North Carolina would be more than sufficient. Looking back now, Louisville was our toughest opponent, and I wouldnt have bet on that for love nor money.
I dont think it will effect seedings at this point, other than to prevent us from getting the #1 overall seed. But if Kansas and Syracuse were to stumble in their 1st games in their respective tournaments, who knows……but it is a valid point now…..earlier this year, who knew?

Rating Strength of Schedule is Not a Science as Some Suggest.
Consider a few common opponents between UK, Syracuse and KU. The writer certainly believes Syracuse played a much more difficult schedule than did the Cats, but it’s interesting that two Syracuse losses came at the hands of a team UK beat – UofL. Further, UK went 1-1 against a UT team that was stronger than it was when UT beat KU. Beyond those common opponents, UK gets no credit for beating UGA twice, but Ga Tech, Illinois, UT, Florida and Vandy all fell to the Dogs.
Writers can use whatever they want to distinguish teams for purposes of rankings (such as the meaningless fact of which team lost most recently), but strength of schedule – particularly at the BCS conference level – is no predictor of game winners in the tourney.
as a memeber of a major conference that has won 2 national titles in the last 10 years
We should be shown that respect and be given at least the 3rd over-all seed.
"all the way"
Florida!
I think the ACC has won four times in the decade. It would be a great arguement for a team such as Duke or Maryland to make.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
Duke has somewhat of an argument, not sure about Maryland....but you also have to have a
w-l record that merits the argument….

It's strong enough.
The schedule will not likely affect seeding.

Your probably correct.
Without the quality wins though it could be argued that some of the teams in the Big East and ACC compete in a better conference and should be considered for the strength of their schedule.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
It could be.
I just don’t think that argument will prevail.

I would agree
with these points made in the article:
"The greatest thing is, this isn’t a video game," Calipari said Tuesday. "This is real people playing with a real basketball in front of real fans. It ain’t on the computer. It’s not numbers. None of that. We’ve been prepared by how we’ve played all season."
Was that really Cal saying that? Sounds like the wineman to me : )
and:
Any consideration of UK’s schedule, Anthony said, has to take into account the target on the Cats’ back.
"They’re playing with that bull’s-eye, and I think they’ve gotten a really good test," Anthony said. "People always talk about, ‘They struggle against these teams’ as a negative.’ I look at it as the opposite. I like a team that wins when they don’t play well, because in the (NCAA) Tournament, you’re not going to play six great games."
IMO: At this point SOS starts heading out the door [unless you’re talking seeding, but UK is a 1-seed lock so the SOS point is still moot]. It’s fun for discussion during the season but, especially at this point (tournament time) anybody can beat, well, most anybody. It depends on who shows up to play.
exactly .......win or go home!!!!!......it's crunchtime baby!!!!.....lol

Target might fit many
I agree Kentucky is one who everyone tries to play their best against but couldn’t the same be said about Kansas, Duke or North Carolina?
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
youre right about that Paris, and not everyone steps up to the challenge every year.....
This year NC is suffering, last couple of years it has been us…..I think it goes in cycles….but if you schedule the teams we schedule year in and year out, I think 9 times out of 10 you have a very strong SOS…..of course Cal promises to make it even tougher in the future…..
I AM THE CAT......The Cat In The Hat!!!
by the way, did you see the new UK football site that is being launched???
there is a link on KSR…..aaronsukfootball or something like it….totally UK football related….right up your alley
I AM THE CAT......The Cat In The Hat!!!
No, not at all....
Only Kentucky. No one wants to beat anyone else. Tennessee didn’t really try that hard to beat Kansas, they were saving it all for Kentucky.
"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." A. Bartlett Giamatti
I think your right
I bet Tennessee didn’t even know Kansas was no. 1 when they played.

Good point PG...
I would say there are a few others that could claim to be a target, though I’m not sure beyond the ones you’ve pointed out how many more I would add. The three you noted have the tradition that makes them a “target”. And to be a little clearer, Greg Anthony is making the “target” point and I’m not sure who else is on his list (of “targets”) but I do agree with him that UK is on that list.
Hey!
I resemble that remark. Coach Cal and I were talking about this the other day and he agreed and asked if I minded if he used it in an interview.
At one point in the season
we have had 6 SEC teams ranked. Plus we have had four of our OOC teams ranked. I would say that our schedule was just fine.
NC was ranked
to me rankings me nothing until the end of the season
"Come test me every day if you want," says Pujols, "Everything I ever made in this game I would give back to the Cardinals if I got caught."
Our cupcakes won less than other teams cupcakes
When Kansas put Temple and Cornell on the schedule, did they know that they would be legit top 25 teams this year? Or that when they scheduled Michigan that the Wolverines would be one of the worst teams in the Big 10?
Calipari said when he got here that the schedule would need to get tougher. I’m sure it will improve in years to come. Additionally, the SEC will presumably return to form with a stronger conference strength which will improve sos for the Cats.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
We;re not like the ACC
There’s a bunch of worthless coaches in the ACC. Several in the Big East and BIg 10 too.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
Are
you serious? OH MY WORD DUDE! I didn’t say that they were worthless……..I was talking about the SEC!!!!!
There is three teams in the SEC that are ranked below Morehead.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
umm
I don’t know who that is but I suspect LSU, Arkansas, and Georgia? All have great coaches…….every team but LSU has an excuse to be down this year due to new coaches and loss of upperclassmen. I am not debating your topic/original post here…….my comment was about SEC being better next year and being a very tough conference. Then you go somehow saying I was taking shots at the ACC. Huh?
Sarcasm doesn't always come across
clearly in the printed word.
ABC
Don’t you agree?
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
nope.....not at all.....they just arent as good as ours!!!......lol.....
I honestly think that there are a lot of good coaches in the ACC/Big East…..I dont like them, but I respect their accomplishments…..there are very few coaches, outside of Knight, that I have a true loathing of……and there are a lot of guys out there who are great guys who are lousy coaches…..I believe Jim Boeheim is a true class act, both as a coach AND a human being…..Tubby Smith is another who is great both ways…..Tom Crean, Tom Izzo, and a host of others…..
I AM THE CAT......The Cat In The Hat!!!
I was teasing. You don’t coach major college basketball and not be aware of what’s going on. Of all the coaches we’ve had at Kentucky there wasn’t one, well, maybe one, who wasn’t a quality coach and could do the x’s and o’s with the best of them.
I doubt there is a coach in the Big 12, Big 10, Big East, Big SEC, opps got carried away there, SEC or ACC who a case couldn’t be made is one of the top 25 in the country. Well, maybe one or two, but most of these guys have a resume that would be looked at as favorable at most schools.

The only thing that really bothers me about all of the "critiques" of Calipari is that none of them have any basis whatsoever
in fact. The correlation between what happened at UMASS and what happened at Memphis is nonexistant. MAYBE and it is a big maybe the standards should be changed to make the head coach the one guy over everything, compliance, administration, all of it. But that begs the question, “When would the coach actually have time to coach?” I honestly and firmly believe that each school’s compliance officer holds the true responsibility for NCAA compliance. The coach should be hired to coach and recruit, and put others in place to do the administrative duties.
The problem is that everyone holds the coach responsible for everything and they actually have very little to do with the things that went wrong in both of those cases. But therse things have happened before with other schools, and they simply dont draw the attention we do. However, we have to accept that as a part of being at UK. I wish it wasnt that way, but history follows you wherever you go. We just have to make sure it doesnt repeat itself. We are never going to sway people’s opinions of us or our coach, so I have resolved to simply watch and enjoy the ride. But they still get my goat from time to time…..lol…..I am a UK fan above all else….lol.
Other fanbases are good too, but none reach the level of commitment, furor, or loyalty we do here in the BBN. I dont know if that makes us good or bad, but it does make us who we are.
I AM THE CAT......The Cat In The Hat!!!
You might want to cleaify that by saying in the SEC or in SEC basketball. I do believe at Duke and North Carolina they care about their basketball too.
How about Alabama, LSU and about half the teams in football in the SEC?
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
I have no doubt that NC and Duke may "care" about their basketball, but they are not Kentucky.......
nor will they ever be, not on their best day. If you are unsure about that, look at the crowd NC had for their 2000th win…..
As far as football goes, there may be more fanatic peopl in those schools fanbases, but they still do not rival Kentucky Basketball. Not Bama, LSU, UT,none of them……..I will put UK’s fanbase up against any other teams’ both pro and collegiate for how good we are.
I AM THE CAT......The Cat In The Hat!!!
ummm
I am just not sure about Bama football!!!!! Bama football people are crazy ………had three friends who flew to CA to the Rose Bowl without tickets! Nuts they are just like us.
ten, hey, ABC said it so it correct.
Some might say the New York Yankees might have a pretty big fan base but I don’t think the population of a city or state that size could compare to the Cats following.
Seems Notre Dame has its own football network. ABC, but that would have anything to do with their following.
Alabama might be a distant second, the team you mentioned. Didn’t they put 94,000 plus in Bryant Denny Stadium for a spring practice game?
But I don’t want to be accused of baiting so I’ll just go along with him and say he’s entirely without reservation, correct about the Cats having the largest fan base in sports. Pro or college. Down here in Florida we see a lot of Florida tee shirts, sorta like you see the UK ones in Kentucky but I would think the mere size of the state’s population would have any thing to do with the size of the followning.
Nope, I’m going to agree with ABC. He would post something like that with out being certain.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
sorry, I meant to say the size of the state would NOT have anything to do with the following.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
I did not say the biggest.......I said the best!!!........YOU said it....not me......
learn to pay attention…….lol……ya gotta be on top of your game to play in the big leagues…….
I AM THE CAT......The Cat In The Hat!!!
I agreed with you!
I’m sure the fans I meet when I go around to these SEC football games are really as serious about their teams as we are about our basketball team.
And since the ones in Alabama probably have a secret love for the Auburn team, heck, no way they could be as big of fanatics as we are.
Pssst, let me borrow that fanaticizm measure machine and we can prove it to every one.
Didn’t you mention something about the lack of numbers at NC’s 2000 win? I must have dreamed that.
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
yes I did, but that goes much more to the type of fans they have than the number....
they can fill that arena anytime they really want to, the problem is, they dont see it as a big deal…..and that is just one reason they will
I AM THE CAT......The Cat In The Hat!!!
Thank goodness for Morehead
In the latest Saragin Ratings, Morehead, the junior beast of the OVC, is ranked higher than Arkansas, Auburn and LSU.
Maybe the guys doing the polls know something.
I mean we all know the SEC is a football conderence but three teams falling below the second best in the OVC? Who would have thought we had some who would be ranked fourth in Western Division right here in our own state!
