March Madness

Every single thing I read, and every single person I talk to, thinks expanding the tournament is a terrible idea. Yet at the same time, there is almost resignation that it is going to happen. It’s supremely odd that the powers that be seem to be so out of step with public opinion on this – even the BCS is better supported by the fans.

It's time. . .

by NYCCats on Feb 8, 2010 10:18 AM EST reply actions

Money

More teams means more ticket sales and more money gets divided between all of the schools. Since all of the smaller leagues are mostly 1 bid even in a 96 team format, this really just puts more into the pockets of the BCS schools, and some into the next 4 like the Mountain West and the Atlantic 10.

by aidanpryde18 on Feb 8, 2010 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I know that is the reason for everything

And, to your point below, some coaches believe it will help them salvage their job when they can get into the tournament (leave aside the fact that basically having a pulse will get you into the expanded tourney, so I’m not sure that would really be true anymore).

But I’m not sure the money argument actually works here. If you decrease the value of the overall property (by making it overall less attractive/interesting to the casual fan, when the “magical” upsets are less plausible), are you really increasing the “money” for the schools? And what does it do to the regular season (and the attractiveness of late season bubble games / conference tourneys)? I’m sure that one can run numbers that shows it is short-term financially attractive, but I’m not sure that works long-term.

Seems a bit silly to do something that is universally panned for a questionable at best financial reason.

It's time. . .

You have to

remember that public opinion once supported the ideas that the sun orbited around a flat earth.

What drives me nuts is the hypocrisy

The football powers that be claim that a playoff takes students out of class too much – despite the fact that 1-AA, D2, etc have playoffs and that the bulk of a potential playoff would take place in December when there are no classes (not counting mini-sessions).

Yet, when the NCAA wants to expand the basketball tournament these same people are mum on that issue.

I get that it’s about the money, but do these people honestly think that people believe the baloney they are spewing?

3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.

by JLeverenz on Feb 8, 2010 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

JL....I tried not to chuckle at that one, but I couldnt do it.....

lol
You know these people are in someone’s pocket, if no one else than their own. It is the absolute pinnacle of hypocracy to think that these are the same people who are supposed to be safeguarding the game from unscrupulous individuals who would seek to corrupt it.

I think we should get rid of the NCAA and bring in the JLA……at least Superman tries to fix things when they go wrong.

Would it not be better for the NCAA to incorporate the conference tournaments into the

big tournament, and use those games to sweeten the package for whomever does the TV broadcasts?? I still say that makes more sense than to add games to the tournament. How many games will a team have to win to take it all with 96? 7? It is just ludicrous. That is adding another 25% to the season.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on Feb 8, 2010 10:55 AM EST reply actions

96 Teams

means that half of the teams would be playing 1 extra game. The way I have heard it, the 9-16 seeds in each region would now have a play-in game much like the lowest two 16 seeds do now.

In my mind, I don’t really care either way, as long as they play them all in one day at the home court of the higher-seeded team.

The bad thing though is that since a lot of the lower seeded teams would be teams that had to win their conference tournament, there is a legitimate chance that some of these teams will play on Sunday, travel to another teams site, play Tuesday, travel to the NCAA first round site, and play a team that has had at least 4 days rest. If this is the case, you will see many fewer Round of 64 upsets.

The opposite could happen too, because this will probably weed out a lot of the weaker conference championship teams that would probably lose anyways.

I think in the end, the quality of the round of 64 games will go up overall, but a lot of the magic of Random St. University beating BCS College will disappear. No one will care about the Play-in games past who goes on their 64-team bracket.

This is a pivotal time for the NCAA tournament. If it turns into 96 teams and gets thrown onto cable, it could really decrease the value of the tourney as a whole. It will also help the NCAA justify not having a football playoff because they are creating a self-fulfilling prophecy that once you start a tournament format, you can’t cap the number of teams that play in it and eventually it grows out of control.

In all of this, I blame the Big East. Their basketball coaches are whining that they only get 8 teams into the tourney when they feel that more deserve to get in and their football coaches know that unless the football tourney guarantees them a spot, they won’t have a team good enough to make it into the playoffs.

I can't say that I'm shocked.

After the Calipari comments, I think that most people saw this coming. He knows he will get heckled mercilessly and he can’t take it. I say we create a fund to pay for whatever travel necessary to get him to Game Day. That way he will have to say the real reason he’s not coming, not this lame excuse.

by aidanpryde18 on Feb 8, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

I wish he would call the game...

I grew up hating Bob Knight just like most of us did. I sometimes think the man takes cheap shots, but I also see a side of him now that he’s not on the sidelines that is somewhat engaging at times. By many accounts, he’s a very kind person privately. And how misguided can someone be who grew up idolizing Ralph Beard, and who became close friends with Ralph?

All in all, I see someone who doesn’t see eye to eye with the Big Blue Nation (to say the least), but who respects the game of college basketball and doesn’t like seeing it move in the direction of an NBA junior league. I see his point, no matter how badly he makes it.

I say make it easy for him to come to Rupp with Brent, and give him some rope. He’ll either use it to hoist himself to a higher level, or he’ll use it to hang himself. He might surprise us.

Good thoughts!

He is not the “Dark Knight” I grew up loathing anymore. And there were, most likely, some infidelities in Lexington back when. All that aside there still appears to be some cowardice here on his part.

The Murray State Shot

That’s a tough one, because of the quality of the YouTube clip, it’s hard to see for sure whether the release was in time or not. If the refs saw anything like that, there is no way for them to overturn it. There is just not enough evidence to the contrary.

I would much rather see the refs let a shot like that stand than take it away on a technicality. That’s just way too close.

Yeah, that's my belief, too.

This year, how many basketballs would you need on the floor to satisfy the star potential of all our talented players? I think that’s what has happened to PPat’s stats—it’s not just him and Jodie with star power. The own-team competition has jumped several steps. Miller has played well at times. His ability hasn’t suddenly gone away. He’ll be a player next year, or, hopefully later this year in a close game where we need him.

I will agree with Dicky V

about not expanding the tournament, but I don’t see his thinking when he says the NCAA should spend their time looking into how the one and done mentality is “ruining college basketball”. I think (?) there were 4 freshmen drafted in 2009. That is hardly an epidemic, IMO.

Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!

by a2d2 on Feb 8, 2010 12:29 PM EST reply actions

well, the 4 in 2009 represent more than it happened for the first 60 years of the game

and that, while probably not an epidemic, is a number that is growing exponentially. I dont have a serious problem with the rule either way, but the college sport purists do, and I understand that. It is a joke for John Wall to be in school. I thank my lucky stars that he is and he’s here, but it wasnt necessary. However, if he is going to be here I would have liked it to be for more than 1 yr.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on Feb 8, 2010 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

The Problem

is that it’s the NBA’s rule. There is nothing the NCAA can do directly, they can’t force these kids to stay in college. No player in the world would sign anything that FORCED them to stay for X number of years.

On the other hand, how exciting is it to watch these kids for just the one year that we get to. I don’t watch pro ball, never have, probably never will. Forcing these kids into college for a year gives me a chance to enjoy their talent. The people that hate the One and Done rule are the ones that can’t recruit. Either they can’t get the players or don’t know how to recruit under the guys that they do get.

by aidanpryde18 on Feb 8, 2010 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

I

sort of keep up with NBA…….I watch the Grizzlies…..some. So I really say the following without true knowledge but the only thing I have seen Wall do that would make him an instant success is his speed. I love his speed but he is still a work in progress to me. Too many turnovers. NBA is so fast paced that he will need to hone in those skills.

by tenken on Feb 8, 2010 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

The Big Thing to Remember

The NBA drafts on potential as much as current ability. John Wall has the raw attributes to be an amazing point guard. No one in their right mind would pass up the ability to mold his skillset around his natural abilities.

You can teach some things, speed, court vision and the other intangibles, you can not. That is what makes him a #1 draft choice.

by aidanpryde18 on Feb 8, 2010 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

question

for me as a GM though, am I going to pay millions the first year for “future” talent.

by tenken on Feb 8, 2010 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

I keep up with the NBA

I never miss a Phoenix Suns game, have’t for years. Steve Nash is IMOP “Best Point Guard to ever play the game” I also watch 4 to 6 other games a week. A lot of young players don’t adapt to the faster and rougher style. Wall may not. Cuz will! I think Cuz will go higher in the draft.

I think so too……I really do. I just cannot imagine a team passing on him.

by tenken on Feb 8, 2010 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

Wall does need to improve no doubt...but like our own Rondo...he will.

IMO, Rondo has become very, very good…he has to been in the conversation for one of the
best point guards in the NBA.

Darius And Brandon

Looking back at Darius Miller’s performance on the 19U USA team and on this current UK squad it is quite apparent that he is content with being in the background. Now whether that rises to the level of an inferiority complex is beyond my level of understanding but it has all the indications of such, most notably his performance in practices as described by his team mates and then failure to perform at anywhere near the same level when the lights and pressure are on. It sure presents a challenge to Calipari and staff and one wonders in the march toward Indianapolis if there is, considering the other priorities and responsibilities, enough time to address Miller’s inadequacies. Is it any wonder in such pressure-packed instances (not limited to athletics) that individuals can slip through the cracks into virtual oblivion? A bit of advice for young Mr. Miller from a former US first lady:

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

I watched the entire Winter Park-Pinecrest game and came away with some preliminary conclusions: Pinecrest is virtually a one-man team that brought memories of Wayland and “King Kelly” Coleman with Knight in the “King” role; Winter Park’s victory was primarily due to the stronger supporting cast around Austin Rivers; Rivers is a better PG (think a more athletic Stephen Curry) than Knight but Knight the superior athlete; Knight is no John Wall (who is?) and he would likely be the 2 to Bledsoe’s 1 if both should be in Lexington next year.

If all works out, I think they will meet in the championship game. Collins/Wall-two best point guards going at it…….what a game that will be.

I realize there was just an entire blog on fan behavior recently...

… but reading this at your North Carolina link:

As the final seconds ticked away in Sunday’s 21-point loss at Maryland, Terrapins fans began to taunt the Tar Heels about their likely postseason destination.

"N-I-T!" they chanted. "N-I-T!"

All the while, North Carolina players sat stone-faced on the bench, many of them covering their heads with towels.

… just made me think that maybe one of the reporters should ask the coach “So Roy, do you think you will be having any fans thrown out of your NIT game this year?”
