I am not a football fan in general...

How is UK supposed to stack up this upcoming year? Any word? I life in FL so its Gator country here (yuck) but I will try to watch UK games when the season starts (hopefully on the SEC networks).

Anyone know if they are supposed to be good this year? (not saying i think they haven’t been, i just do not follow)

by kentuckyrules on Feb 3, 2010 9:43 AM EST reply actions

Our recruiting class will be ranked about the same as it usually is

We’ll beat some teams we shouldn’t beat and we’ll lose to some teams we shouldn’t lose to.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Feb 3, 2010 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

yup

glad to see there’s no real fall off. i saw the head-coach-in-waiting as designed to avoid that, so it’s worked out on that front. assuming the new staff is as shrewd in their evaluation of talent as the last staff was, we should be well positioned for 7-8 wins. go cats!

Where are you?

Where are all the whiners from the last football recruiting post? Interesting…you let the coaches finish the job and there are surprisingly good results. Congrats to the coaches for a solid job, at least to this point in the day.

by ukcat2169 on Feb 3, 2010 9:59 AM EST reply actions

I don't know about whiners

But I said this:“do you think it would have been unreasonable to at least explore other options as the head coach at UK? Do you think this recruiting class validates the way things were done?” Well, as one who hates liars and people who do not take responibility for themselves; The answer is YES, this class has validated that decision.(I just said that I am wrong). I also said:“It is still, and I believe, will remain to be the 11th place in conference recruiting class; then how have we moved forward?”. We know the answer to that now also. Of course as one who hates liars, I NEVER PERSONALLY SAID THAT JOKER PHILLIPS COULD NOT COACH. That; my friends remains to be seen. But a KY guy, like him surely wants to beat UT as bad as I do. If he does that; I will personally recommend him for cannonisation.

I'll still whine about a bottom of the barrel class

in terms of the SEC. I know recruiting rankings don’t actually mean a whole lot, but I don’t see anyone on our commitment list that Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia, or LSU would trade for. It’s going to take those kinds of prospects to get us out of the SEC basement.

And don’t look now, but Vanderbilt is catching up.

We're going to have to do more with less.

Recruiting like Alabama or Florida is not going to happen. I would just like to get where we could recruit like South Carolina or Arkansas.

The problem there is the perception. Both those are seen as football schools, and UK … well, isn’t. That’s going to be a hard perception to overcome.

I think our recruiting is improving, incrementally. As long as we keep doing that, I think we’ll be getting closer. It’s as much what you do with the talent as the talent you have.

So true

We really took a hit on the O-Line because of graduation, but I was pleasantly surprised by how many of the second stringers performed. The coaching staff did a good job of getting the non-starters some quality minutes this past year.

by hoboat33 on Feb 3, 2010 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

and after looking at the recruiting class, those second and third stringers (and redshirts) better step up since offensive linemen are a rare breed in this recruiting class. Or maybe they’ll be switching some of the Dmen to the other side of the ball for their college years.

What about full back?

That seems to be a big cog in our offense, especiall as a blocker; do we have anyone that can truly replace Conner?

Signing Day thoughts so far.

It’s a mixed bag for certain.

First the down side. It is tough to lose any coveted recruit, it is doubly tough to lose them to an SEC rival. UK loses two of their signature recruits in athlete Ryan Smith (to Auburn) and OL Kenarious Gates. (to Georgia)

On the other hand. UK picked up two in state, last minute commitments from Miles Simpson and Tim Patterson. As bad as it is to lose recruits to SEC foes, it is even sweeter to get a recruit over your archrival. Patterson, who has yet to qualify academically, picked the Cats over the Cards. The icing on the cake is RB Brandon Grainer, a surprise four star commit.

I’d rather have Gates and Ryan over Patterson and SImpson, but it is vitally important to recruit in state. This, I believe, is not a signature class. Good and workman like but not stellar, especially, especially by SEC standards. What counts more is player development and maximizing potential, and the Cats will do a good job of that.

by Thomas Hunt Morgan on Feb 3, 2010 11:25 AM EST reply actions

I'm not suprised about Gainer

Our staff has done a fine job putting RB’s in the pros; this validates the continuity I was wondering about.

A month or so ago, Derrick Locke submitted the paperwork to the NFL but withdrew his name from consideration. He’ll be back.

by Ornery1951 on Feb 3, 2010 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Better then it looked a couple of weeks ago...

I don’t think anyone is going to say this class is one the top classes UK has signed but it’s turning into a better class then predicted a week ago. The signing of Brandon Gainer wasn’t expected and landing Tim Paterson helped make this class look a little better then what we feared. I’m actually a little excited about the kicker we signed, Joesph Mansour, I heard he has kicked field goals from as far as 59 yards in HS and he also is considered one of the top punters in the country. If true, a big weapon for UK!

by Kelkat66 on Feb 3, 2010 12:22 PM EST reply actions

Mansour Is Apparently for Real

His very first field goal was a make from 50 yards and he was named as kicker to the Georgia All-Decade team. He has been honing his punting skills and has also been timed at something like 4.5 seconds for the forty.

Rivals has him listed at the 15th best kicking prospect in the nation. He is considered only a 2 star recruit by Rivals but I noticed that none of the kickers were rated higher then 3 star recruits.

From Courier-Journal:

University of Kentucky football commitment Joseph Mansour was named to the MaxPreps.com All-Decade team for the state of Georgia.

Mansour was an All-State placekicker for LaGrange (Ga.). He will sign with the Wildcats next month and enroll at the school next fall.

As a senior, Mansour made field goals of 52, 56 and 59 yards and booted 84 percent of his kickoffs into the end zone for LaGrange.

Donte Rumph For the Third Time

Rumph had academic issues that caused him to divert. I think he attended one of the private academies and then a junior college. While doing that, he drew offers from some “name” schools, but he stood by his commitment to UK and they have stood by him.

by Ornery1951 on Feb 3, 2010 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Just added to the list

3-star rb, Raymond Sanders has signed.

UK is now officially loaded at eh RB spot: D. Locke, D. Russell, C. Williams, R. Sanders, B. Gainer, and M. Simpson

By my count, there are at least eight signees (plus TE transfer Ryan Wallace) capable of contributing next year, with Donte Rumph (DL or DE) (now that he’s made the grades), Mansour, and Josh Gibbs (DB) possible starters.

by Ken Howlett on Feb 3, 2010 1:09 PM EST reply actions

Excited about TE next season.

With Wallace and Smith, I think we have some solid TE options for the next few years. Jacob Tamme was such a big part of Joker’s offense in the past, but we have not seen much production out of that position since. The troubles UK has had at WR are well documented, but we struggled at least as much at TE. Getting these guys will hopefully take some defensive pressure off Cobb, Locke and Newton.

by Thomas Hunt Morgan on Feb 3, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Well

I should add that either Wallace or Smith will start at the TE spot

Rumors of UT's demise are greatly exaggerated

Will we ever beat these guys? If you haven’t figured out by now, i’m obsessed with their defeat at UK’s hands. That would rank even better than Marshall beating WVU, which seems far more likely. Of course, we don’t have the hate from the UT side that Marshall has from WVU fans, but that is only because after this much success, UK is just another check in the W column for UT; while Marshall actually has a chance to beat WVU.

You insinuate

that UK doesn’t have a chance to beat UT, which is ridiculous. UK has been so close over the lsst decade of beating them on several occasions that it’s painful. And I seem to remember a 5 OT classic … so don’t make like UK has no chance of beating UT.

It is very strange, the ways UK has lost to the Vols over the years, about that there is no doubt.

by Ken Howlett on Feb 3, 2010 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

not impossible

But the OT loss broke me this year. We just seem to always find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Of course, IM idiotic homer O, Abdullah intentionally threw the game at UT a few years ago(see him parading around like an idiot with his helmet off after making the potential game winning play on D. Then, he stands there with his hands on his hips when the UT rb takes it to the house. Abdullah was within arms reach with his hands on his hips;if I had a video editor ..), which shows how anal I am about it.

Like

Tennessee’s inability to beat Florida(yes there have been a couple of wins here and there but not many), Kentucky has to get the mindset that they are a lean mean football machine. They have to have the confidence that they can win these close games against good opponets. Two years ago Kentucky SHOULD have beaten Tennessee AND Florida. I think alot of it is mindset. They need a killer instinct like we say the basketball team needs. Kentucky has the ingredients to do some major damange……….good coach, good fans, good players, etc. They just need to believe in themselves. That starts with the fans too……….

Thank the Lord for Marshall football in the 90's

At least somone around here was trying to be upwardly mobile. Bill Curry had a chance to take the program to the next level, but he just could not get past the 1940’s offense and bad game coaching. Heckuva recruiter though. He was so good, that it made Mumme look good for a while! C’mon guys, admit it, wasn’t Mumme ball fun? When you are low on big bodies the all out run and shoot combined with a ton of gimmicks will sure keep the viewers from turning the channel. Now those days are gone. The best part of the Brooks legacy is that we are able to win games by simply being better instead of gimmicks.

I have only lived in KY for one year since college, that being

1991-92 and have never wavered my support for KY football and I have lived around Gators for 18 years now and it has made me dislike them even more. I think it was because of Spurrier. The fans were cocky like him then but I will give them credit they seem to be much better under Myers. The Gator fans have forgotten where they came from though, they didn’t appreciate going to a big bowl game this year at all and probably led to some of Myers thinking about quitting. C'mon man..

You can see by the results of my poll that peolpe on here have different ideas of what success means for UK football; hence I am eating crow based on those results. I still don’t think this class will advance UK past the “also ran” bowl; but that seems to be the success other fans are comfortable with, even after ignoring your VALID points about the weak scheduling and extra game. I have to admit, having been to the “Music City Bowl” once, that it was a good time. I just came away thinking, "I wonder what the Sugar Bowl is like? ".

considering that UK has to play in the conference that has won four NC in a row, I would say your right. Think about that, Kentucky has played every national champion the year the NC won the championship……..and they beat the NC in overtime two years ago. I would say that was pretty good :)

Thanks Ken

Thanks Ken for the mention.
We play the in conference schedule we have because it’s required.
The non conference schedule is for wins, only wins. Everyone loves to watch us play the Norfork States, Easterns, Westerns, and others ranked below 100 in the group of 120.
Every other team plays the winnable games? Tennessee plays the UCLA’s. Alabama plays Virginia Tech. Heck even Vandy played Michigan a few years ago. Georgia plays Oklahoma State. Check and see how may played Georgia Tech last year. South Carolina plays North Carolina State and Clemson.
Ken has his view and I have mine. Check out the shedules for yourself.
I saw Curry mentioned earlier. He never played a division AA school. Played LSU every year he was here. So did Jerry Claiborne. Facts are easily found if you wish to look.

I'm actually going to agree

with Paris on this one. Our non-con schedule is a joke. Vandy schedules one or two hard games each year. In years they play well, like 2008, solid non-con wins mean a ton. Beating the likes of Wake Forest and Georgia Tech (which they didn’t, but still) means a lot more than beating Northeastern Wyoming Community College.

The SEC has 5 of the Top 10 recruiting classes according to ESPN....

UK’s class is above average but nothing special. What I hope for is that there are several guys that outplay their current ratings. None of that will be known for several years. For now, the best UK fans can hope for is the usual 6-8 wins and another so-so bowl game.

The usual

6 to 8 wins is a higher baseline for Joker to start his career here than most coaches had. If he improves on that by an average of 1 win over the next couple of years it would be great.

Tennessee

has had proof in the past that a top five class ranking does nothing sometimes aka 2005. If these kids are coached correctly they can beat anyone.

Notre Dames #1 class of 2007 hasn't impressed anybody so far.

The other day I looked at the top players from 2006 (Mica Johnson HS class). Mica was top 10 by the way and it was amazing how many didn’t do much. I think it was the top 100 players.

I think

your five stars are the only ones that are guarenteed to play well…..beyond that …….just don’t know

Even some five stars don't shine.

These are young kids and a lot of things can throw them off the right path. Starting with GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS.

If UK was only as serious about football as they are basketball....

I’m a brand new member of SBNation – never posted nothing anywhere.
My thoughts on our football program are the same as many know – we are not as dedicated to our program as the top SEC programs are. It’s all about spending money and a great deal of it and taking a chance on a new direction.

The top coaches in the country (example Nick Saban at $3,900,000 annually) made 2-3 times more than Rich Brooks did at $1.25 million. In comparison John Calipari makes $3.7 million annually not counting shoes, TV etc. So which program are we the most serious about?

You pay for what you get.

I’m a fan of Joker Phillips and wish him all the success in the world. If he and the university had the guts to hire Mike Leach as the O.C. for just a season or two this could create a tremendous buzz around the country, hopefully not to negative, and help immensely with recruiting IMO. To see that aerial attack again – wow. Mike Leach’s salary at Texas Tech was $1,750,000 annually. He might take somewhat less for the couple of years we could have him?

I may not write again in quite awhile – so got it all out of my system.

Thanks for listening.

Where In KS, KUKC?

I lived in Garden City for 36 years, married a KU alum and have 2 sons who are KU alums. Makes for some interesting conversation and game-watching.

Welcome and come back soon cause I love

people who think like I do!;-) Don’t know if Leach was an independent thought or you read my post from a couple of weeks ago saying the exact same thing but the recruiting today shows that UK needs to think outside the box to climb in the SEC.

There are those with equal love for the two programs

But the pain and suffering will never be the same.

Good to see you here.

We don’t need on stinkin’ Mike Leach. Haven’t you seen the offensive product the head coach of the offense has put on the field the last two years?
Of course that wasn’t recruited by Joker I’m told her. Just coached.

I would KILL for Mike Leach as OC.

Personality problems be damned.

class turned out MUCH better

then I thought it would, as of yesterday. Hated to lose the three we did. If we had gotten those, with the current class that will end up on campus? Hey, we can dream. How many 4-stars of at least one of the “experts” do we have in this class? Is Patterson a 4?
Is Rumph still? Simpson? If we can ever pull off a 9 or 10 win season NOW, with 4 years of success to show for it behind us, then we’ll see a jump up the recruiting ranks. But, we gotta get that BIG year in first.

When a great nation falls, it falls from within. There is only two ways to do this. One must "take" power by force, or when the other side simply "gives" it to them. me

Without a Woodson meltdown against South Carolina

We would have already reached that plateau.

Plus we should of beat Tenn. and we definitely should

of handled Miss. St. that year. We should have won 10 games that year and kept a top 25 ranking.

Tee Martin New WR Coach

Former Vol and close friend of Randy Sanders leaves New Mexico for UK and $40,000 raise. Operation WIN adds another soldier.

wasn't Tee Martin an option QB?

How does that qualify him to coach wideouts? Just asking, not hatin’

Hey, don’t be so damn picky. He’s a known name and we need that. Sam Bowie could coach the tight ends. Just teasing.

It could be that Rowe never even gave Martin the money even though

it was intended for him. Coaching wideouts by an ex QB isn’t to hard to understand. They are qualified to be coordinators or head coaches but didn’t play all the positions. That was one thing about Brooks that the players said he could coach any position. You boss might of never of done your particular job but doesn’t mean he does not know how you are supposed to do it.

I guess both. Him on coaching and who nows about what went on at Tennessee.

Travis Henry is from this neck of the woods and he went to Tennessee and he was illiterate. His girl friend at the time told her boss who is a friend of mine that if Travis didn’t make it in football he would end up working in the groves down here. He made it in football but ended up with nine kids and in prison.

TIM Macadoo … this young man is fyling under the radar and will be a BIG TIME player for us. Know of his family and watched him play. There is some kinda genetic freak thing going on in that familiy. All they do is produce super athletes.

Recruiting Insight

Here’s a breakdown of D1 football recruits by state and shows the to-date insurmountable obstacle faced by UK. The Commonwealth ranks near the bottom nationwide in producing prospects and perhaps more important a not-even-close bottom in the SEC. Considering those odds it appears that anything approaching .500 in SEC is quite an accomplishment.
