Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

The Big Blue Daily Mail -- Volunteer Hangover Edition

I've still got a bit of a hangover from the loss to the Tennessee Volunteers yesterday.  But we have a few days to recover, and then we head down to face a remarkably tough Georgia team that is far better than their record.

I think John Wall fell out to second in the POY picture around the time of the LSU game during the early part of February.

And Turner took over starting with the Iowa game a few days later. Comparing OSU’s performances without Turner (losses to Butler, Wisconsin [blowout] & Michigan) when Turner was out with the broken back to when he played (esp. wins over Michigan State and Purdue ON THE ROAD) really solidifies him as POY, in my mind.

OSU has a 6 man rotation in a solid conference and they're currently ranked # 9.

It’s all because of Turner. Too bad he was the most awful, annoying voice.

If you watch the OSU-Purdue and OSU-Michigan games,

I don’t see how you could disagree with Parrish. John Wall is awesome (a close second), and he as “taken over” games. But the 2 that stand out most in my mind were against Stanford and Miami (OH) – subpar teams. Turner “took over” against Purdue and MSU.

Looking ahead a little bit

When UK plays Florida on Sunday it will be for the chance to go undefeated at Rupp for the season. As near as I can figure it will be the first time since 1999-2000 that UK will do so.

That 99-00 team lost a lot of games, but they were all on the road/neutral sites.

As for games at Freedom Hall, I think UK should have a “neutral and neutral” series with Xavier. Play one game in FH and the other in a neutral site in Cincinnati.

3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.

I like the Xavier idea.

I used to live around Cincinnati, and I think there would be a lot of interest in that matchup…Plus Xavier would be a tough opponent…

I've often wondered why we didn't have a home and home

with Ohio State. Losing to X would almost always be inferred as a “David slays Goliath” moment, with good reason. Ohio State would be a battle of near equals.

Plus, we’d get a better view of Turner v. Wall as POY candidates, too.

That Memphis hack

is using a page that you wrote in his argument that Cal is going to New Jersey ….

found it amusing, Tru, but check the comments he left under his article

he's rather idiotic sounding to me
But I can’t say the same for UK. I wish them the absolute worst. So perhaps this is all just wishful thinking. But I would laugh myself silly if he left UK high and dry for the NBA, talent leaving Lexington in droves, and only one recruit coming in thus far. They’d be in worse shape than Memphis was when Cal left. Oh, the glory. It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it all.

That article is chock-full of crap as seen in the sample above. Still hanging on to the ‘your school stole my coach’ thing. Grow the hell up. Sure it’s possible he’ll leave, UK fans know that for sure!

That guy sounds like a jilted lover

These people in Memphis need to get over it. Cal left for a better job…..deal with it.

amen - you don't have to live with it....

i will make the prediction that Cal will leave within 10 years – may be next year, might not. At least at UK we KNOW he will leave some day. i think those in memphis believed he would be here forever….at least our sense of self importance over our program has some historical footing. they seem to forget memphis had a final four stripped long before cal arrived (1985).

I have lived in memphis and grew up in lexington. most people i run into cannot figure out why i would live in memphis if i have family in lexington – wonder that myself sometimes. i believe pitino was ok living in lexington but knowing the type of family man cal is, i have to believe he is in heaven in the bluegrass…

I read an article in SI-

Where Dan Patrick interviewed Coach Cal. He asked Cal point blank, where would he be in 12 years. Cal answered, on the golf course, and wanting to know why D. Patrick was bothering him…My opinion, Cal is happy coaching at the best College basketball school in the nation, and will stay at least until he’s in his 60’s…

The "Cousins Deserves Better"

was nice to read. Really nice. I think people have formed the wrong idea about our big guy, only because they wanted to find something to be negative about.

The Herald Leader

had a picture of Scotty Hopson doing the John Wall dance. He said that he wanted his home state to think “missing out on him was a loss.” I think that picture had me more mad than anything in the whole loss situation. lol

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Yes

Hopkinsville has sent few players to UK – only Ravi Moss comes to mind.

i sort of thought

BCG “recruited” him to make the locals happy but that he really did not do it seriously. never figured hopson the type to fit into bcg’s coaching style – whatever that might be

he can be mad all he wants

as long as he don’t pull a Jeff Hall on us and beat us on the line in the NCAA tournament. Jeff saw that as revenge for not being recruited by UK. The funny thing is; even after that, UK still has Eastern Ky due south of Lex, and the world ending at Winchester. Too bad the combination of Frank Lee/Jr. VanHoose never got the chance to play UK.

Have To Say It

All of this team’s goals are still attainable. This loss was not that bad. Beat Ga. and at least a piece of the SEC is theirs. Beat Florida too and the SEC title belongs to them alone. We all knew they were headed for tough stretch in the schedule. So far so good. We need to handle the next game and then head back home. Georgia will be a challenge like any road game in the SEC. Unilke UT, our season is not defined by one win or one loss. It will be defined by the body of work and the final chapters are to be written in a few days. Time to polish a few rough edges on defense and time to get back that outside stroke! Time to rip out the rearview mirror because what’s behind you is not important.

GO CATS!!!!

Where's the Bench?

I havn’t revisited the box score since Saturday. However, if I am recalling correctly, our bench, such that it is, scored only three points against Tenn. That worries me heading into tournament time, especially on days in which our Freshmen Phenom guards can’t hit an outside shot to save their collective lives. I agree with Lyric Smith above, however, in that all of our goals remain attainable, provided we can find someone to consistently hit outside shots against a zone defense. If not, Syracuse might simply prove too good for us to beat.

by tooblue on Mar 1, 2010 8:17 AM EST reply actions

I think

that was my biggest question……..why didn’t he put Stevenson in? They were killing us on the interior. Why not put Cousins/Stevenson(a veteran) in the interior. Our bench has proven to be very effective and Saturday was not the day to let them sit the bench while some of the freshman were making freshman mistakes. Very bad decision by Cal.

He is shrinking his rotation like an NBA coach, but I agree with you that overlooking former starters as bench contributors is outrageous.

Well folks, we had a bad game....

and still almost won it….I can live with it….I didnt like it, but I can live with it.

I think I am the one who coined the title “Three Headed Monster” earlier this year, someone is diggin into my repetoire.

The guy from Memphis forgets one thing…….we all know John Calipari is leaving……we just dont know when, and as long as he wins here and we dont get hassled, I will take whatever time he is willing to spend and enjoy it.

I dont think the CBS guys were laughing at Wall, they couldnt stop drooling over Tennessee and Pearl long enough to do that.

Brandon Knight is going to look really good in Kentucky Blue……and I think he knows it. Along with about 3 more that are in the top 25 who havent yet committed.

Magic Johnson liked Cousins better than Wall. Hmmmmmmm……….

Georgia Is A Pivotal Game

Wednesday’s game at Athens is IMO the most important game of the regular season for the following reasons:

1) Avoid losing two games consecutively.
2) First road game following a loss.
3) Prove that UT was an anomaly rather than a trend.
4) At a minimum mitigate the horrendous perimeter — especially from 3 — scoring drought.
5) Reestablish confidence/swagger/urgency.

Dont think you will have to worry about him trying to take another charge......

it’s safe to say he wont let that happen again…..even if it means a foul…….especially considering that one was the guard’s fault, not his…….If I were you, I wouldnt get him riled…..Miss State tried…..and failed……miserably…..

That is an effective strategy. If they want to see Big Cuz get up and down the court in transition; maybe we should manufature a new controversy involving him every game!
