Upset Saturday Open Thread
I'm just opening this thread up because we seem to have a lot of people who want to talk about... well, everything today.
Possible topics:
- Upsets in CBB today, including the Georgetown Hoyas, Kentucky Wildcats, and maybe the Kansas Jayhawks who are currently down 15 points to the Oklahoma St. Cowboys.
- The UK loss to the Tennessee Volunteers.
- Anything Wildcat or college sports related.
Discuss away.

Pilgrim sort of is a beast. Be nice to have hom next year. He’s shredding Collins pretty well today.

We already had Pilgrim...we don't get him next year.
We gave him to Ford at OSU.

I think I want Nova in that one.
They already have 4 losses. Cuse only has 2.

Heh.
I was thinking exactly along the same lines. :-)

I really doubt it tenken
We are not the voters faves. :-)
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
Well, argaubly our loss
at Tennessee is a better loss than Kansas losing at an unranked OKST.
Doubtful though. If Cuse loses. It really depends on what Purdue does tomorrow. If UK and Kansas lose, and Purdue beats Michigan State tomorrow, they might go to 1 regardless of Cuse. If Cuse wins, they get the 1 or 2 spot.

Really,
I think if Purdue wins tomorrow, they get the 1. They’re 3 right now, if 1 and 2 go down, they’ll get it. Plus, a win over MST is a good win.

seems familiar...
wow this kansas game is eerily similar to our game. Opponents wearing orange, at home, up by 16 at one point, now the blue uniformed elite team is clawing back. lol
so apparently
all the refs are blowing it today…….Kansas had to wrestle the kid to the ground to get them to call a foul.
Who is "at the top of the key"?
Play by play needs a little work ;-)

I said in earlier post
with Pilgrim , Miller, Liggins, Harris, stevenson, and Harrelson, UK would have been a sweet sixteen team at least.

Ahh...
The only thing that makes a UK loss less bitter is a KU loss the same day…haha..suckers…now you know how we feel! :P
Well ...
… I don’t think the UT loss really got us out of the #1 seed hunt. Kansas’ loss may give us one more to play with. Of course, I don’t want to test that theory. :-)
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
are you guys talking about,
— #1 seed for next week, #1 seed for the tourney, or #1 overall seed in the tourney?
I’m curious about all, obviously…. : )
Just a 1 seed in the tournament.
I could care less who the #1 overall seed is. Ask Louisville if that helps. :-)
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
I think so, but they'll still go to #1-
Especially if Purdue loses to Mich. State tomorrow…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
I'm having a very bad vision....
…of Duke becoming #1….yuk….. (arggg I just threw up in my mouth)….

Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
I said vision, not dream...lol
So, who falls the farthest, UK or KU..???
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
KU for sure.
Lost to unranked OSU.
We lost to ranked team who also beat KU.
by mrmondaynite on Feb 27, 2010 6:33 PM EST up reply actions
I really don't think that is a factor.
2 days rest or 10 days rest, a loss is a loss. A win isn’t any less valuable because you you had 10 days rest before it, so a loss on 2 days shouldn’t be “less bad” than any other loss.
by mrmondaynite on Feb 27, 2010 6:35 PM EST up reply actions
I hope Kansas-
At least we tied it up after being down big…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
I dunno about that one...
The other teams ahead of Duke at the moment are all marginally better I’d say and have less losses (for the most part) against better competition.
Does the media seed the teams for the tournament? Nope.

Ole Seth Davis says: If Syracuse loses then KU still #1....
Greg Anthony said no way the way Kansas played today. I project UK #3 if Syracuse
loses.
I think Syracuse wins tonight.
Top 3 would all have 2 losses…Syracuse has the most recent, best win, and the other 2 lost….sooooo…
1 – Syracuse
2 – UK
3 – KU
No way....
If #1 and #2 both loose on the same day, no way previous #2 moves ahead of previous #1…
IMO
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
I doubt it will happen, though.
UT is not that much better than OSU.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
UT has toppled 2 elites this year
Rankings say otherwise, though. And that’s what you go by when moving teams around :P
I didn't fully
But we shall see :)
- and #2 is a little different than #1 and #9.
Plus OSU lost to a horrible Texas Tech team. It’s all debatable but I guess we’ll see on Monday :D
I don't think so either ...
… with Hummel out. But then again, we saw what happened when UT lost Tyler Smith.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
So we should be against Purdue, correct? I'm getting overwhelmed after the loss
by bluegrassgal on Feb 27, 2010 6:41 PM EST up reply actions
Ah, who cares?
Really, it is kind of irrelevant. Purdue will be hard pressed to maintain a 1 seed with one of their best players down, and the Committee takes that into account.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
There is now a formula to beat us
If you stop Big Cuz, and Wall has an off shooting night;plus opponent hits shots=Uk defeat
"all the way"
I think the team needs to back off defending the three, a little
and guard the cuts to the paint.
No matter where you're at, there you are
well
that did work but he left his teams vulnerable to the 3.
I’m hoping for a balance… depending on the circumstance.
No matter where you're at, there you are
today was just a bad day
All of these great games today, even ours, are proof of why we all love college BBall.
"all the way"
It wouldn't be any fun if we knew who would win, I agree. ;-)
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
It wasn't really the half court defense today.
It was the transition D. UT executed exceptionally well, and if we had stopped them in transition instead of allowing them all those dunks, we would have won.
I like what we did today against the long ball, but the transition D was just abysmal.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Why was that, Tru? I mean we've seen the guys slow to get back on D before so you'd
think by now they would know what they must do. I don’t understand why the breakdown today.
by bluegrassgal on Feb 27, 2010 6:49 PM EST up reply actions
Good question.
Cal said some of the guys were “sleepwalking” through the game. He didn’t name names. Sometimes, you just have a bad game, I guess.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
I think we're talking about the same thing.
“cuts to the pain”t = transition d. Your words are better
No matter where you're at, there you are
even if he is right
we will have a great run, unprecedented for rebuilding program. Other teams in the hunt also have weaknessess. Up to us to exploit.
"all the way"
I still don't get how youth hurts us
I get that in some cases experience means a lot in the tournament. But I also know that this team can play on the same level as some more experienced teams.
I don’t expect a NC but I don’t think it’s impossible for us either.
Exactly
And I don’t think that can be attributed to inexperience so much as the style of play.
I feel like 30 games into the season, there’s no such thing as a freshman.
Experience= players making the correct decisions during the game with less coaching...
but your right it can and has been done…the Fab 5 of Michigan
I feel like experience is a word people throw around with little regard to meaning
At least in college basketball.
You could ask anyone what they mean by experience and you could get a different answer every time. :)
I hate to say it but
Macy’s to/assist ratio, against far better competition is a revelation alonside John Wall’s: 2.6 for Macy vs 1.53 for Wall. Let’s throw Wanyne Turner in the mix: 1.7. I have other numbers; but if we win the NC, Wall will be the lowest rated PG at UK to win the NC.
"all the way"
I think a lot of us are aware that he's not the best PG
I think we’re more or less amazed by his resolve. He does not crack under pressure and can singlehandedly change the momentum of a game.
He’ll be an amazing PG in the NBA though, where the floor is spread more and defenses don’t pack into the lane.
you know I used to watch the NBA a lot but it's just not
interesting anymore to me. I was really surprised Rondo has had the success he has so you’re obviously right that Wall will do well in the NBA. As I typed that…..realized how it looked….not knocking Wall, he’s a good point guard, just not seeing player of the year.
You can't fix "stupid"!
we had a side discussion with Tru lately
Where a consensus seemed to be that the NBA game isn’t making it for us anymore,
"all the way"
I sometimes watch Detroit play to see Prince but I
haven’t watched a total of 10 minutes of the NBA this entire year…..I’d rather watch Olympic curling!!
You can't fix "stupid"!
is your wife giving you grief....mine just doesn't get it
and I keep telling her the entire world’s watching.
You can't fix "stupid"!
didn't know it was on....THANKS!! Finally get to
see the pants everyone is talking about!!;-)
You can't fix "stupid"!
I mostly watch NBA for Lebron
It’s too fun to watch him dominate.
And sometimes I watch the Celtics to see Rondo play.
I don't see POY either
If anyone deserves National POY, it’s definitely Evan Turner. He basically carries OSU.
As far as SEC POY I’d have to say Cousins would edge out Wall IMO. But the media loves Wall more.
My thoughts as well. Again, I'm not a big NBA guy but
I’d draft Cousins before I’d draft Wall.
You can't fix "stupid"!
I thought Rondo must have been from NYC
The way he pounded dents in the court when he was at UK.
"all the way"
yep.....he was kinda like Rex with Sutton....just
never fit into Tubby’s offense.
You can't fix "stupid"!
He has great potential, but not polished point guard yet
He is choosing the spectacular as opposed to the right play. If he feeds the post the way he did to Orton during the SC game; that is what we need out of him.
"all the way"
AMEN.....couldn't agree more. Just play within yourself and of
course that goes for Bledsoe too….probably even more but Wall has the ball in his hands a lot more than Bledsoe does. We only had 8 assists today and UT had 15.
You can't fix "stupid"!
The upside for Wall is
He IS the right guy with the ball at the end for us. If the charging call is not made at the end today, we win.
"all the way"
yeah but if you remember the play...it looked like he went into
three guys…..someone had to be open before he got that far. That’s the thing I see a lot of that he and Bledsoe both seem to drive at least a step too far a lot of the time and either charge or turn the ball over.
You can't fix "stupid"!
At the start of the season-
We all would have been ok with 27and 2 at this point…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
You know that is so true, and honestly, as much as I would love the NC and hope every
day for it, I’ll be giddy even with the Elite 8. This season has been a big win even if the kids don’t win another game.
by bluegrassgal on Feb 27, 2010 6:57 PM EST up reply actions
This season has been one of the best ever-
No matter what happens next!
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
I believe we will win some of the remaining games just on talent with many mistakes as we have in the past.
However, if we were to lose out and collapse the fall out would be very damaging to the UK cause for the next couple of years. Therefore, I can’t honestly write that not winning a few games in the NCAA isn’t critical for the future of UK Basketball.
No way we lose out after what we've been through so far...
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
I'm fine with today's loss
Plenty of teachable moments, for Cal to work with.
And this game will probably have no bearing on SECC, SECT, or Seed.
No matter where you're at, there you are
11 maximum games to enjoy this 2009/2010 Kentucky Wildcat Basketball Team with all it's...
youthful mistakes and glorious talent…as we watch PPat, Razor, Perry, Wall and Cuz finish their college careers. Get ready to hold your breath… yell in the success and frustration with the roller coaster efforts that we have come to embrace from the Cats this season.
Despite the loss today…how about John Wall’s 360 lay up today? Then right after the lay up, we give up a long pass to Prince for a dunk.
Oh My Gosh
We weren’t stunned today, but we are now looking twards a new win streak. Oh yeah and a championship. These guys are ok. A loss is good for them to learn from. Oh did we all forget the number one team went down today also.

"As we strive for excellence never forget what got you there"
Don't know how it soudned on tv
But there were clearly “Go Big Blue” and “De-fense” cheers from UK fans when down 15. Also could hear “C-A-T-S” over top of their “V-O-L-S” cheer with the band.
UT fans were loud, but UK fans being loud when down on the road double-digits, showing once more how great BBN is.
You have to do something-
To drown out rocky-top!!
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
I couldn't hear it on TV,
but I noticed all the blue shirts in the crowd. I was proud of the BBN.
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
I was way up and in the corner wering my blue 54 shirt
There were definite moments when UT had the ball and all you heard was “De-fense!” And all of the ref complaining came from the orange, but the number of fouls on them and the superstar treatment of Wall and Cousins. Of course that wasn’t all of them, but was proud to not hear BBN complaining as they were to team down on the scoreboard.
It is also amazing to watch how much Cousins deals with every possession. I saw Pearl with a two-handed full extension push in the back twice in one possession, the second coming as the ball was going out of bounds.
Couldn't hear any chants.
Could hear a smattering of applause on UK baskets.

"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
They did play Purdue close too
Too bad they count games @ Nashville and Athens too.
He was quite gracious on the radio, saying that the schedule helped them this time and UK was fatigued after a comeback. He said occasionally beating UK is important to keep it a rivalry and his goal is to be UK’s in conference rival on par with UL and IU.
Allright, I know I am bringing up the tail end of this day, but what in the name of all that is Holy happened???

There are a lot of similar bubble teams this year. Different people value different stats or see inconsistent teams on different nights.
I know this much.....I want UT in the SEC tournament now......badly........I do not want that win being the last thing that PEarl remembers about UK this year
Resistence Is Futile......We Are Blue
Sounds good to me
Would that be the finals?
I would ask to be in the same NCAA bracket and meet in the Elite Eight, but they’ve never been that far.
I cant remember how the seedings go in the SEC tourney.......I think it would have to be an SEC final
Resistence Is Futile......We Are Blue
Hrmmm
It would probably be the finals. The byes for the tourney would be

W2

E2 (Vandy)
UT is currently sitting at 3rd in the East, so I think that puts them in that lower bracket. (I think.)
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
No, it puts us in the upper bracket
We’d play LSU in the first round and Ole Miss in the 2nd. Should we win those, a date with UK awaits (unless Auburn or SEC East #5 pulls a stunner).

Can we get these refs to come to the SEC?
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
I mentiooned that the past couple of threads
The Big East has refs that are CONSISTENT. If they call it tight, they call it tight. If they let ’em play they let ’em play. The SEC refs are horrid. They change their calls through the game and have never spelled the word consistent.
I've watched Syracuse play a mean 2-3 zone this year
and I wonder if UK couldn’t play a mean 1-3-1. ….Liggins at the top, Patterson on the baseline, Cuz in the middle, and Wall Bledsoe on the wings. It they had worked on that for awhile it would be a sweet zone D
I don't agree with that...
If they have been that good then why is Purdue above them currently w/ more loses…if Purdue wins, they deserve to stay in front of Syr.

I’m guessing, without even seeing game recap one, that we didn’t shoot the 3 worth a crap… if we don’t get someone shooting the trey, we can kiss any chance of success in the tourney bye-bye for many reasons!
I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.
Can't agree anymore
The three has been a major problem as of late. But I think we’ll find our stride just in time for Madness. GO CATS!
Two points here...
First, during conference play, I would think a very good result would be to win all home games, and split on the road. That would be 12-4 in conference. I’d take my chances with that record any year. And this team should do better than that. IMO.
Secondly, I’ve heard a rumor that this team made a pact early on, that if they didn’t win the NC, that they would all come back next year to win it. Doubt this is true, but a nice idea to think about anyway.
In regards to the first para...
You’re right, you’ve got to defend the home floor and steal some on the road to win the SEC. That’s the way it’s always been… We’ve had 7 road games to this point in the year, and we’re 5-2. 7-0 for home games. That type of record will get a 1-2 seed in the SECT every year, and more importantly, a bye on the first round!
When we started the “tough” stretch of the year, beginning with MS ST, the comments around here were “everyone would be happy with a 4-2 record in these games”. We’re at 3-1 now, with a good shot at 5-1. Enjoy it!! :-)
Second para… Bluehound says it best, “nice fantasy”.
If your wings don't sweep....
I'm late to the party(?) here but the Syracuse victory last night
Jumps them to No. 1 today, IMO, no matter what Purdue does. Even if the Boilers rally around their fallen player and win, voters will discount their long-term chances.
KU’s two losses are slightly “better” than UK’s two losses, I also think. Losses to UT at UT wash out each other, but their second loss at OSU is a little better than our second loss at USC.
My two, or four, cents worth.
That Syracuse game was scary
Correct me if I’m wrong, but as a Vol fan, I see a lot of similar weaknesses between us and you. Y’all, obviously, are much more talented, but both of us have trouble shooting from the outside (as evidenced by our 24% from three yesterday), and I get the impression that both of us would struggle with a well-executed zone. Fortunately for y’all, John Wall can still drive against it, but I wouldn’t imagine it’s your ideal scheme to face. And Syracuse’s zone is insane. I want to stay as far away from them as possible in the bracket. I suppose y’all don’t have to worry about it, as you both will be #1 seeds, but if you end up in the Final Four, ‘Cuse is one team that I’d be hoping got knocked out early.

This pretty much mirrors my thinking, although
if the Orange can lose to a very mediocre Louisville team at home, then they too are very vulnerable.
Herald Leader
had a picture of Scotty Hopson doing the John Wall dance. He said he wanted his home state to feel like “missing out on him was a loss.” I think that picutre made me the most mad of all about the whole thing. lol
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

He was offered a scholarship and didn't take it
Don’t try to play the “I wasn’t respected” card now.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
So if it's not about being rejected by UK
It’s about being too good for the home team? No wonder we were down before Calipari.
"all the way"
