Kentucky Wildcats @ Tennessee Volunteers: Open Game Thread
Kentucky Wildcats at Tennessee Volunteers, Feb 27, 2010 12:00 PM EST
Playing the Tennessee Volunteers in a sold out Thompson-Boling Arena today in Knoxville is going to be a major test for the Kentucky Wildcats, and could sew up a share of the SEC regular-season championship for the first time since 2004-05. Five years is a ridiculously long time for Kentucky to go without an SEC regular-season crown, and it feels really good to this UK fan to have it back within reach after so very long.
The Volunteers, though, are not going to roll over and play dead for the 'Cats. They want payback for the solid defeat they suffered in Rupp Arena, and just like every single game on the road has been this year, this game will be held in front of a sellout crowd of rabid fans who would really, really enjoy hanging only the second "L" on their biggest rival's record.
Game particulars are as follows, courtesy of UKAthletics.com:
| Date & Time | Sat., Feb. 27, 12:00 p.m |
| Coverage | TV: CBS Radio: BBSN GameTracker Online Audio Live Video via CBS |
| Location | Thompson-Boling Arena Knoxville, Tenn. |
There is no fear that UK will be looking forward to another opponent on this one -- the Vols really got under the skin of many of the Kentucky players during the game in Rupp, and you'd best believe they will by trying hard to do it again in Thompson-Boling today. I am quite sure that this UK team is fired up to beat Tennessee in Knoxville for all kinds of good reasons.
More following the jump.
What UK needs to do to win:
- Unleash the beasts inside -- Patrick Patterson and DeMarcus Cousins.
- Be ready for lots of defensive changes. Bruce Pearl could not fail to notice how long it took Kentucky to solve the 3-2 zone he threw up against them in Rupp.
- Get to the free throw line. Getting to the line helps in so many ways.
- Attack the offensive glass.
What UK can do to lose:
- Take too many threes. They need to shoot open ones, but they should focus on getting the ball inside all day.
- Allow Wayne Chism and Scotty Hopson to have big days. Chism is hobbled, but how many times have we seen wounded players rise up and have the game of their lives?
- Allow the Volunteer pressure to get to them.
- How do you spell, "Loss?" Missed free throws. UK cannot afford to shoot as poorly from the stripe in Knoxville as they did in Rupp Arena.
SEC championship, Baby! Calipari may profess not to care, but I absolutely do. I want to put the SEC championship behind us so we can focus on our next goal -- the SEC tournament championship. Win both, and the NCAA seeding will take care of itself.
Go, 'Cats!

Dang it... I gotta rush this last patient out of here
I hate noon tip-offs. For my brother its even worse, he’s in Bowling Green and he’s got an hour before he’s done for the day.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Your brother is a doc as well?

Yeah
He was a little more focused than me. Instead of finishing a 4 year degree, he just got his required pre-reqs and came on. Ended up 6 months behind me in chiropractic school instead of 3 years behind. We lived together in Iowa while in school. Was a lot of fun.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Getting the ball inside to Cousins and PP is the key.....do that and
Chism will be gone anyway.
You can't fix "stupid"!
C......A......T......S.....CATS.....CATS.....CATS !!!
Unleash the beasts…….OH YEAH !!!
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!

Knight picked Tennessee to win
on Gameday. Even more reason why we must win.

what's Knigth's deal
I don’t remember him being this biased against before, is it more of a beef with Cal?
Bobby Knight-
Patted Jay Bilas on the back, when Bilas also picked UT! What a jerk!
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
Bobby Knight...Bobby Scmight...who cares

Thanks CBS!
At least you have an online feed. I hate Georgetown! Go Big Blue
Thinking.....We will show them a game without us....lol
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
I hate to admit, but their fans really came out in force today
I’m sure the homecooking calls help keep them in it
Two or three-
Terrible calls in the first few minutes!
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
is it so dark in there
They can’t see when they swarm and shove cuz.
Ut and miss are the darkest gyms ever.
Changing how you think will change what you think.

And their webcast
is nowhere near as good as espn360
I am so glad I am not at that game
I would have to go bop some heads…….Cuz is getting killed………..UGH!
yeah Cal remind them that playing defense is part of the game....oh and don't
forget rebounding
You can't fix "stupid"!
Yeah, and if we lose, we can just blame it on the officials, right?

FT's are going to be critical today... Gonna have to make 'em to win this one!!
If your wings don't sweep....
That was
One of the most ridiculously sweet shots I’ve seen by Wall in all of watching basketball. Just wanted to give some props to Kentucky for pulling that one off.
Tennessee Fans: We win at teh Internet!
I try to stay away
From the other team during the game. I’m out now ;-)

Hey bobo... Got our number so far, huh?? LOL
Stand by for our run, it will come….
If your wings don't sweep....
Tennessee has watched enough tape to see that when we have both Cuz and Orton in the game,
we don’t get back at all. Marginally better with PPat.
been saying that all through the thread.....at least our rebounding is picking up
You can't fix "stupid"!
Can't stand Prince-
Hard to believe he’s kin to Tayshon…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
If that was late in the clock - OK
But that was just DUMB
Good learning experience right here...
This is the way it’s gonna be in the Tourney!
If your wings don't sweep....
Did yall
hear what the commentators said about what Pearl said about beating UK? Sounds like UK fans and football :)
Its gonna take a big effort today
and that’s what we are lacking now
Beginning to think we're a bit tired... Late Thurs game may have taken something out of us.
But, as I said earlier, gotta learn to play this way!!
If your wings don't sweep....
Prince fouls down the court twice on bledsoe...
And a nicle/dime called against UK!! WTF…wrecked i say…
you folks that don't think the officiating sucks probably didn't notice
Prince chest bump Blesoe on the play
You can't fix "stupid"!
No Way do I ever walk away from the Cats-Ever
by blue oregon on Feb 27, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions
bout'time we got a call
come on eric make these shots
cal
has his work cut out for him in adjustments for the second half
what are the rebounding stats
feels like they are really beating us
Mayes
grabbed him by the arm borderline intentional
Yep
No lack of focus, bad ref’s. etc
They opened a big old can of whoop ass on us,
That was just one half, though.
I’m worried about this one though
No matter where you're at, there you are
UT only up b/c EVERYTHING is going their way...
Its a game of runs and UK can certainly run…let get cookin for 2nd half
okkk, new game now
spot em 11 and kick their butts
11 points is really not that many.
get a couple of defensive stops and hit a few shots and were are right back where we belong…..IN THE LEAD. : )
Down eleven- could be a lot worse-
Need several players to step up!
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
I am not "one of the folks who doesn't think the officiating sucks."
I agree that the calls seem to be going UT’s way.
I am one of those folks who think complaining about officials (in any sport) is one of the worst fan copouts out there. I moved to OH 2 years ago, and it’s what Bengals, Browns & Indians fans do.
we still will point out the obvious..
far from a cop-out IMO. UK just needs to adjust to the officials and know what to expect, thats all..we are all “coaches” here right? ;)
by kentuckyrules on Feb 27, 2010 1:02 PM EST up reply actions
UK needs to defend better in transition. They can control that.
They can’t control the refs.
by mrmondaynite on Feb 27, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions
See both POV. Officiating sucks and complaining sounds like an excuse. But,
in the comfort of my own home, I plan to complain.
by bluegrassgal on Feb 27, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions
well said....
i hate the whinning, but my god facts are facts, we’re just not getting the calls today
I am worried that they are tired and UT is so fired up. Very worried that the
team can’t take this one back.
by bluegrassgal on Feb 27, 2010 1:03 PM EST up reply actions
Guys you are not out of it.
we have played really well in first half, not sure if we can keep it up. I know you guys are upset about the officiating, but you guys have shot 16 free throws to our 6, so it could be worse for .
It's simple Cubs in the spring and summer, Vols in the fall and winter.
Tn
zone and no offense…has to improve. Maybe we are blinded by that orange
Well, Prince hit two threes
And he usually can’t throw one in the ocean. Take away those six points and it;s a close game. We just have to come out and play Kentucky basketball, and we;ll be ok…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
We're running with these guys
and they’re picking up the fouls, that’s good. Problem is they are running and scoring points in transition
No matter where you're at, there you are
Speaking of fouls, how deep is their bench
by bluegrassgal on Feb 27, 2010 1:07 PM EST up reply actions
Not good I think
when Chism was out last Tues, they fell apart
No matter where you're at, there you are
a 3 for us...
a turnover for them and we’re right back in this
Second half thread up.
Looks like we’re gonna need it.
