"I think John Wall is, to me, the best player as well as the best guard in the country. He's really an unbelievable leader," Johnson said. "Coach Cal (John Calipari) has done an incredible job -- first year, to have his team ranked No. 2 in the country, only have one loss? It's truly amazing."
Yes, Magic, it is amazing. -
Kentucky's Calipari says winning the SEC title means 'nothing' - ESPN
"I've always taken the approach that it's about the seed in the NCAA tournament," Calipari said. "If you want me to be honest about how I think and what we're doing to prepare, that's what it is. The SEC tournament is about our seed in the NCAA tournament."
When you have a team like this, that's a reasonable statement. But we need to restore the tradition of winning SEC championships.

John Calipari Kentucky SEC title would mean nothing - CBK News - FOX Sports on MSN
That's why his answer was swift and decisive when Calipari was asked Friday what winning the school's 44th conference title would mean: "Nothing."
I don't agree with this, if this is what he said in context. In fact, I regret that he said it. We owe our league more than a casual dismissal. I am giving Calipari the benefit of the doubt right now, but he really should not be so dismissive of the league championship, if he in fact was. -

interesting comment about SEC meaning nothing...
Tubby used to say winning SEC was the goal, with everything else icing on the cake.
(btw, forty, i do not mean to get anything started, but it is a different focus – not saying one is better, just different)
only one rule in my house - uk has to be your favorite college bball team

I would think
that with the way the media is portraying the SEC as down, Coach Cal could be right.
If you didn't read the PPat-Kentucky Kernel link
It is worth reading, IMO.
I think we are going to have even more fun.

Hungry for a winner ...
I think the regular season title is in the bag …. SECT… we’ll at least make the semis and I feel we’ll get a number one seed in the big dance.. I would like us to get the number one overall seed but, I feel we are a lock for a number one seed right now. KU is in the drivers seat for the number one overall seed, but they still have some tough games to play and I think we still have a chance at it. Just sayin …. :)

I saw him ejected and realized, in my 30yrs of existence, I can only recall indiana coaches being ejected from games….I’m sure others have, but none come to mind

i feel that winning the SEC isnt necessarily a goal
If your goal is to win every game you play. Its rewarding, but I was always taught to focus on the end product and whatever happens in between is icing on the cake. Should UK win all their games, conference championships will obviously happen…but I hope they are breaking huddles screaming indianapolis and not nashville. Again, if the goal is to win, the rest is really just symantics when you really think about it.

Tru, IMO Coach Cal is gearing his players to concentrate on the best possible NCAA seeding...
and to not be satisfied with winning SEC. Keep in mind the overall youth of this team. As Cal as said many times this team needs lots of coaching.
I agree with what Ken said on another thread
Cal’s statement was all coach speak……I don’t read much into it. I agree with the premise those, the NCAA tourny is much more important than the regular season SEC title.

Winning the SEC tournament is an important part of UK reasserting it's dominance
Prior to just a few years ago; the SEC was our oyster. Look at the ridiculous all time records against our conference foes. 43 conference titles. The SEC is OUR CONFERENCE, lets lord over it. When we are done, we will be truly tournament tested, and prepared to win the whole thing in the Big Dance.
"all the way"
Cal's statement about the SEC
is not any different from him saying that our team is 10-8 earlier in the season. He is not worried about how our (mostly) adult minds, or the media responds to such statements, but only how his young team perceives them. The players watch the news and read sports blogs and I’m sure they hear everything coach says to the media, and he knows that and has stated that many times. He simply wants to focus on one game at a time, and if that brings an SEC Title then I am sure he will be ecstatic, but not openly ecstatic so these young guys will stay focused on the bigger picture.
