Why expand the tournament

if it wont’ potentially affect the outcome of the tournament? 16 seed teams don’t reach the Final 4 anyway, so why would anyone think that a 19 or 20 seed could win a national title? If anything, reducing the tournament by 8 or 16 teams makes more sense from a competition standpoint.

It's an easy appeal to egalitarianism.

Plus, all the $$$ the NCAA seem to see in reducing the regular season to meaninglessness.

I can see how Coaches' would love it

those 16 seed teams get to say “I made Possum Trot U a tourney team” or something.

"Come test me every day if you want," says Pujols, "Everything I ever made in this game I would give back to the Cardinals if I got caught."

Yeah.

Exactly.

Hey now

I happen to live close to Possum Trot and depicting PTU as something less than a top 16 team is a little harsh. Next thing will be some sort of bashing of Monkey’s Eyebrow. Careful there.

I'm from Paducah

So I know all about being halfway between Possum Trot and Monkey’s Eyebrow

haha

I’m from the area too…hey, what’s so funny about Possum Trot or Monkey’s Eyebrow?? I’ve heard them all my life so don’t even think about them being completely over-the-top bizarre town names any more.

I read the Gillispie article front to back

and it really just confirmed what I already believed. An outstanding guy that didnt have a clue. And the unfortunate part is that he probably really loved his job and what he was doing, and really believed he was doing it the right way. Thirty years ago, I am not sure he would not have been the exact guy we needed for the job, because his methods, while honorable AND honest, are more suited to the players of that era. Unfortunately, as I said, it is suited to that era, or at least to a place where your recruits are more hungry than talented.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

Like A&M?

I like Gillespie but I really don’t think he was suited for such a high profile school.

Thought about BG when I head Cal was spending 30 minutes before

practice, one-on-one, with Patterson. And I think Cal did that with another player having trouble, too.

I thought, BillyG would have never done that. Never gone out of his way to help a player like that. He’d have screamed at them and done something stupid to them, but he’d never have devoted extra time daily to trying to help them.

Good riddance.

(Remember that creepy fake-smile he always wore when things got bad? Especially in those painful coach’s programs on TV with Rob Bromley? Oooh.)

by TeresainSC on Feb 16, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

I don't agree

Patterson has a story that he tells of Billy Gillispie personally driving him from Lexington to West Virginia for a friend’s funeral (or something like that) before Pat had ever played a game for the blue and white.

I think the man genuinely cared about his players as people, he was just clueless about how to treat them when it came to basketball matters.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

He

in my opinion had some anger issues. He would do some really great things and seemed to have a great heart but would be emotionally/verbally abusive to some of his players. Hopefully he has worked through them. I am interested in what Porter says about it in his new book.

Its funny that the Gillispie article comes up today

Because it was 2 hours before the Mississippi State game last year that I had the jarring revelation that Gillispie had to go.

I remember it clearly and even remember what stretch of road I was on while listening to the pre-game comments leading up to Varnardo and Co making a trip to Rupp Arena. Gillispie was asked about what the team would do differently to avoid another triple double with 10 blocks from Varnardo… Gillispie’s answer? “Well I don’t think we need to do anything different. We need to take it to him aggresively and just play tougher.” 7 blocks and countless altered shots later, I had my answer about Gillispie’s coaching ability at UK.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I hope Cousins crushes Vernado

On the court in the basketball sense, that is.

The whole Cousins getting stupid phone calls/texts just confirmed (again) two of my life-long mantras: 1. People are stupid. 2. People are cowards. Like 1/4 of the people making those dumb calls/texts would have the balls to say all that crap to his face. UGH!

Cousins

is a beast who will eat Vernado for breakfast……..but on a side note I really like Vernado…… a gentle giant.

Remember the quote I put up from Rupp a while back about them putting a dead skunk under his bench before one game? They never change, I guess.

Howd they get his number anyway? I’d like to have it if its that EASY to get….

Lets get it on!!!!

He has two friends there

but he said they “wouldn’t” have given it out, someone suggested facebook but I would hope he was smarter than that. All I do know is that one of the MSU sports writers took a photo of a sign that had his number on it posted at a bus stop.

loved the SI piece,

and Coach is so right, Cousins is a "fun-loving kid". It baffles me that some people might think otherwise, I mean, just look at him. : )

Also, I thought it was really interesting (in the CJ piece, I think?) when it talked about how good a shot blocker Daniel is and how he is really helping DeMarcus prepare for Varnado (and all other excellent shot blockers, for that matter) in practice. I hadn’t really thought about it that way before, but yes, Daniel is most surely a great asset in that regard and definitely deserves some props for helping out "behind the scenes". Atta boy, Daniel.

That is ...

… a great point.

Cousins has more moves than most guys his size, and plays … well, not so much below the rim as at the rim. He doesn’t really play way above the rim like some guys his size.

So I think that he is used to having to deal with guys who can block is shot. We’ll see.

Cousins reminds me of a slightly less crafty Kevin McHale

But with tons more physical gifts. Anyone who passes on Cousins in the first three picks is gonna make Bowie over Jordan look smart.

Billy G to DePaul?

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.

I saw that

…although I am not sure what he is talking about here:

“He’s a good enough coach, but he was mismatched,” North said. “He looks like Marty – Ernest Borgnine – from the Academy Award-winning film back in the ‘50s. He’s just didn’t fit in there, I mean, he’s a paisan; he’s a New Jersey guy, and he’s at Kentucky – the land of horses and bluegrass.”

Gillispie is definitely not a New Jersey guy.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Yeah, that was odd

I can, however, get where he was going with this:

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.

It'd be odd to see him replace his former assistant

Tracey Webster is the interim coach there (former Gillispie asst at UK).

DePaul

I think he’d be a decent fit there with his midwest ties from his time as an assistant to Self at Illinois, but the Big East is a tough place to try and re-establish your coaching credentials. I have always thought that DePaul could be a good job, I don’t understand how a major college in the heart of Chicago can’t get better recruits than they do.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

that's what I always think about St John

How are they not awesome? Nice tradition, in the Big East, and right in the heart of Manhattan? Maybe New York is not quite the recruiting mecca it once was, but come on…I can’t believe it’s not still pretty fertile. And you’d think NYC kids would love to stay home—although I heard it mentioned during the commentating of an SJU game (Louisville game, probably) that since so many kids go to prep school now, that takes them out of the city right after high school, and after that they’re more inclined to be open to branching out and leaving the city. I don’t think it will happen, but I thought St John sounded like a much more probable UL-exit-strategy than the Nets for Pitino.

Kirk and Askew

Ironically, two of today’s posts tie together. Not to speak ill of the dead, but Dana Kirk was rumored to have told Vincent Askew to hold the ball against Villanova in the semis at Rupp in 1985, leading to suspicion that Kirk threw the game. The justification hinged on rumors that he ran up some considerable card gambling debts at the Colonial Country Club in Memphis.
