And charged with failure to change address?

According to WKYT. That is very petty. (Must have been a Uof L fan. :-))
Like I said in the FanShot, I still see no foul. It does not say if he was involved in the assault investigation and most likely would have if he were since the failure to change address was tacked on.

What is "failure to change address?"

Did he mess up the DNS on his website or something? :-)

Seriously, I have never heard of that offense.

Seriously?

If you move, you have 10 days or so to notify the DMV. It is an extremely petty charge. I am not sure what the rule is for college students. But it obviously applies or they could not have tacked it on.

It is 30 days,

and every prosecutor that I know will drop the charge if you bring in an updated license that shows the address change. The law exists so that an accurate record will be there for finding people.

Not to excuse what he did (whatever that may be)

But I had at least half a dozen friends arrested for public intox and the like while we were in college. Unless a lot more comes out, I don’t see this as a major stumbling block.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I am not really too concerned.

If I had been charged with D&D every time I was guilty of the offense, I would have done more time in jail than in the classroom.

As long as he wasn’t involved in a fight, I’d say this will be handled “in house.” He was of age, and the perception of disorderly is very much subjective. He had a perfect right to be drunk at 21, although getting arrested for being drunk is generally a bad idea and reflects poorly on the school.

Still, it isn’t a DUI or anything. But if he was in a fight, it could get ugly.

Certainly not ideal for Hartline or UK, but a minor issue, at least in my view.

And, this is important, he wasn’t operating a vehicle! At least he made one good decision last night.

The possibility of domestic assault is troubling but there are some other concerns. . .

Doesn’t UK have a no tolerance policy for alcohol related criminal offenses? While many of us can identify a time where we could have been hit, he was hit with more than just AI, he also got disorderly conduct wasn’t he? You generally don’t get hit with that unless you anger the police with your loud and obnoxious behavior.

Cops saw no indication of injury on the girl,

so I find it hard to believe 6-6, 230 lb Hartline hit her. I have a feeling the police thought the same thing, and without a witness, that charge (by the girl) will be impossible to prove.

Excusing violence because of alcohol is a very slippery slope there a2. Didnt see that one coming from you? Especially considering it is a young woman. I have a hard time believing that he hit anyone, but if indeed it was true, chalking it up to alcohol is not the way to handle the issue.

by Greg Alan Edwards on Dec 10, 2010 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

I think the point is that

Drunken parties have a tendency to get rowdy, which can sometimes lead to fighting. If a person (of any gender) chooses to put themselves in a situation like that they need to be fully aware of the consequences before going to the party in the first place. There is no excuse for the hitting, and the girl should be upset that she got hit, but she should also take some responsibility for her own saftey and maybe steer clear in the first place.

Again there is no excuse for fighting, even while drunk, so don’t think I am advocating that. I am just trying to state that if you knowingly go to a drinking party you can’t be shocked if a fight breaks out next to you.

Hartline is a senior, enjoying his last few months at UK.

Cut the guys some freaking slack. I enjoyed 6 years while pursuing my 2 degrees and I hate myself everyday for not spending a few more. So the guy went out and had a few. Do you know how freaking easy it is to get arrested in Lexington? It was so bad when I was there a few years ago, they would arrest you while walking home. Ok, so you were smart enough not to drive, and spent all your money at the bar, like a good kid, and don’t have money for a cab. You decide to hoof it the 4 blocks to get home. BOOM, you get arrested.

The only thing that might be of concern is that the report said a girl claims he hit her, and that it cause injury. As you all have already mentioned, there was no sign of injury. I in no way condone him hitting a woman, and if he did I hope he sits the entire game. But give me a freaking break. My wife is 5’9", 120. If she hit me in the face, it would leave a mark.

Yes the timing sucks, but it’s a good thing the bowl game isn’t until June. :)

by UKlvrBM on Dec 10, 2010 10:39 AM EST reply actions

I dont think anyone is condemning the kid BM, just a stupid thing to do.

The rest of this is just bouncing circumstances off of one another. No one is claiming he is some sort of degenerate, just not as smart as he should have been, that’s all.

by UKlvrBM on Dec 10, 2010 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

My experience between 2003-2007 is the opposite.

You had to do something crazy to get arrested. We pissed in the bushes in front of cops, etc.

The only friends I had who were arrested were arrested for mouthing off to cops or refusing to go to the hospital when a cop suspected they had alcohol poisoning. So, forgive me for saying it, but in my experience, you probably hung out with people who had big mouths.

But maybe it’s relative to where I came from. I think Lex. cops are lax because Pittsburgh cops aren’t.

by mrmondaynite on Dec 10, 2010 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

My best example...

is walking home from UK’s School of Design’s Beaux Arts Ball, which was held in in a parking garage downtown. I was stumbling home, ended up on Broadway. I lived on Aylesford near the Classroom Building. A cop stopped me, but he stopped me to make sure I got home all right. He gave me a ride home. Generally, if you’re nice, they’re nice.

So what?

He got charged with drunk & disorderly, which has nothing to do with driving.

You can have a personal chauffeur and still get a drunk & disorderly.

And I never understand when people commend someone for obeying the law – i.e. giving Hartline credit for taking a cab instead of driving. He was just doing what he was supposed to do, and what the law expects of him.

I say all of this respectfully, a2. I just feel like your love for Hartline is getting in the way. I like him (and respect him, first and foremost) too, don’t get me wrong.

But I think Hartline’s lawyer will need a little bit more than “the cop was a UofL fan” or “cops get called to parties for no reason all the time” in order to negotiate with a prosecutor.

This:
Hartline and Carnes were arrested for alcohol intoxication and disorderly conduct, Roberts said, after officers determined they were "visibly intoxicated and posed a potential danger to themselves or others."

(emphasis mine)

is why he was arrested. I’m sorry, I know he is a college student and whatever, but he is also the STARTING QUARTERBACK for the KENTUCKY WILDCATS and with that comes a certain level of responsibility that must be maintained. Criticize the behavior based on it’s illegality, not his position. The moral issues that result in illegal behavior are far more important than his position on a team. Sure, it could hurt the team and I would be upset about that. In the end, though, I care more about Hartline the person than Hartline the starting QB for UK football or, for that matter, the unhappiness of a rabid fanbase.

don't consider it a double standard...

i consider it a higher standard. when you hold yourself out as a public person representing a group i believe additional responsiblity comes with the privilage of your position. if it were a double standard, i would agree with you however, imo, there is a higher standard of conduct required…

IMO, a higher standard is the same as a double standard.

I am disappointed in Hartline because I would be disappointed in myself in the same situation. Not because of he’s a celebrity, not because he represents anything, but because I hold myself to a standard that “drunk and disorderly” conduct is simply wrong. Personally, I can’t even hold my preacher to a higher standard than myself – he’s just as human as me, tempted to make the same mistakes I am. His position just makes it more public if/when those mistakes occur.

Society.

I think you hit on a really interesting thing here.

I think that we as a society (this is society as a whole, I’m not really talking specifically about this Hartline issue, but about something bigger), but anyway, I think we as a society have a tendency, and wrongly so, IMO, to idolize or revere athletes. Who we should be idolizing are people we actually know. Like our fathers, our mothers, our brothers, our sisters, our girlfriends, you know?

Oh, and I don’t think you have been formally and politely welcomed here and for that I apologize. Welcome, dshnarw, it’s great to have you around these parts. Keep on posting, my dear. You’ve got good stuff. : )

Thanks BSC.

I think you’ve nailed it.

Thanks for the welcome! Just in time for me to leave on the 9-hour drive to Lexington for the IU game! lol

IU Game

Just found out that I will be there, too! :) Gooooo Cats!

well, Glenn was right...

he said one reason to go to Bham for the bowl was to see what the young guys could do. sort of thought that was strange, but if this goes down hill much more, looks like Newton and Moss will be 2 of the young guys on display

At least

he didn’t throw her under the bus. j/k

The whole thing gets major coverage of a minor event. Granted, he’s the starting QB but adding on the “failure to change address” charge is bordering on piling on. Who knows, maybe the girl looked like this?

I don't understand why everyone is just dismissing this entirely.

If this was UofL’s QB (Abe?) we would be all over it. It sounds like Hartline did something wrong, and that reflects poorly on UK.

by mrmondaynite on Dec 10, 2010 1:56 PM EST reply actions

Sorry if "dismissing it entirely" is hyperbolic.

It just seems like everyone thinks this is a non-issue.

by mrmondaynite on Dec 10, 2010 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

"moral justification"

Hard to criticize Hartline over something that (as it seems on this thread) most everyone has justified doing themselves.

Doesn’t make his behavior excusable, but does explain the general lack of concern.

by dshnarw on Dec 10, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Again

“most everyone” is not the starting quarterback of a Division I football program.

Wrong is wrong.

Comparative morality is ridiculous, IMO. Don’t hold someone else to a standard you can’t hold for yourself.

by dshnarw on Dec 10, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

We will just have to agree to disagree here.

Mike Hartine is a representative of the University of Kentucky in a very public way – like it or not.

Thats cool with me.

These are personal preferences, after all.

But I think this, mixed with a good dose of fandom, is what we’re seeing here. :)

by dshnarw on Dec 10, 2010 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

We will just have to agree to disagree on that.

Hartline has to accept what comes with his position – good and bad.

do not mistake justification for regret

I regret a lot of things I did as a youth, I cannot justify them by saying that I was just young……that is an excuse not a justification

I'm not dismissing it

but I just don’t think it is severe (with the exception of possibly striking the girl) as many of the incidents we’ve seen from other players, especially of the Georgia, Florida and other flavors. Of course, the press seems to be doing their usual job of blowing it out of proportion.

Hartline has not had even the slightest incident in the years he has been at UK; not even the rumor of trouble. The disorderly conduct is a very judgmental charge and tacking on of trivial charges makes me wonder if the arresting officer might have gotten a little caught up in the heat/significance of the moment.

by hoboat33 on Dec 10, 2010 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

When you start seeing minor charges tacked on

is when you see someone that would not shup up and became a jerk to the police.

by wklawdog on Dec 10, 2010 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

"Sounds like"

is the key phrase here. None of us, nor the media were there when it happened. We do not know what went down and may never know. I am hesitant to condemn someone on little or no factual evidence. I can think of a scenario in which Hartline would be justified in intervening in a fight to break it up. Pushing someone away becomes punched in the face pretty easily in the heat of a drunken brawl. Just remember how Cousins nearly “decapitated” Swopshire last year! At least we were watching and could make up our own minds about what really happened. I will let the dust settle before I come down for or against Hartline on this issue. Being drunk in public is another story.
