A (well-meaning) rant about the current state of the comments section

Ok, this is going to come off poorly, but here goes. . .

I've been around ASoB since the end of the Tubby regime.  One thing I've always liked about this site is the comments section.  Discourse on this site is supposed to be somewhat elevated, with intelligent, well thought out (and written) comments to articles or other germane topics.  Often, this is still the case - don't get me wrong.  But more and more so, it is degenerating into one line posts with multiple exclamation points, vapid observations, and general inanity.

Look, we all (myself included) make the occasional brief exclamation, the occasional lame attempt at humor, or the occassional irrational claim.  And obviously, I'm not talking about the comments in the game threads.  I'm just asking the commentariat if we can step it up a bit and return the discussion to the level it once was.  I know we can - there are plenty of intelligent people on here, old and new alike.   As I see it, here's a good decision rule - if the comment looks like it would belong in the comments section of KSR, it probably doesn't belong here.  I love KSR, but the comments section there is atrocious, and I'd hate to see us end up there.

I'm sure this is coming across as elitist and snobbish, but it's really not (ok, maybe a little elitist, but that's what I thought this site is supposed to be - a site for the discerning fan).  And it's not my site, so if that's the direction the mods want this to go, it's not my place to say otherwise.  So take this rant for what it's worth - a well-intended plea to get the dialogue back to the level I know it can be.

Thanks for listening.

I totally agree NYC

I try to let my tiny inner-craziness out on the game threads only. I think the “discerning fan” in the title pretty much speaks for itself as to how the comments should be.
I have also thought (occasionally) some of our comments are becoming KSRish too. This site NOT being like KSR is why I am here.

The comments have become a little more KSR-like.

That doesn’t mean I visit the site less. I just comment less.

by mrmondaynite on Nov 3, 2010 7:50 PM EDT reply actions

I couldn't agree less

It sounds like you ‘may’ believe some folks that comment are beneath you. That’s one of the reasons I drop by so infrequently, people seem more concerned with the grammar or spelling then discussing sports. I myself often feel I’m not worthy of commenting because of all the great writers. I feel somewhat ashamed or embarrassed to post a "FanShot or “FanPost”. Afraid I’ll screw something up and be called out.

Now I know that’s on me, but just sounding off here.

Anyways, I love all you guys, and I read comments every single day, I just choose not to post much.

You shouldn't feel that way vince

My grammar is not always correct (I know it) but I still chime in with my small opinions. I realize that my writing ability is not the best (a writer I am not), but I still type my thoughts when I feel the need to. And I usually struggle with getting my comments to sound discerning. I have toned down my comments (I read more now), mainly because I realized a lot of what I was saying was not really adding to the discussion.
But I don’t fear my sentence structures not making the grade. I am what I am. If someone needs to criticize my structure or spelling , I hope it makes them feel better. ;-)

Me too, a2. I’m one of the world’s worse about speaking before thinking. At my age I know better. I think it is called “taking
offense when none is intended.” Hoof and mouth disease can be very embarrasing.

I recall a story where four guys were conversing but one never said a word. Finally one of the four asked why he said nothing. His response was, “I would rather keep my mouth shut and have folks think I’m a fool, than open it and remove all doubt.” Been there and done that. LOL

It has nothing to do with grammar, or worthiness

It has everything to do with reasonableness, respect, and a refusal to drop into an emotional rant. Vince, I think you do a great job, and you shouldn’t feel embarrassed. I greatly value every comment you make.

Part of the reason the discourse has deteriorated has been my unfortunate but simply unavoidable absence. I have not been doing my job well in here, and I take full responsibility.

I wish I could assure everyone I will do better, but I cannot. My current position makes that utterly impossible. So I will have to depend on older and wiser members to help. I don’t need to point anyone out, you know who you are.

Speaking your mind is fine, but the only thing I ask is that you speak it without rancor, especially toward other members. You may disagree, profoundly, but we all must find a way to communicate without being disagreeable. Otherwise, this site will lose its character.

Perhaps one day I will be able to spend more time on the blog. At the moment, it is all I can do just to keep my head above water. This happens to all bloggers who are not independently wealthy or not in committed relationships, so I’m not the Lone Ranger. I just regret I don’t have more time to spend, like I used to. Unfortunately, blogging simply doesn’t pay the bills around here. :-(

Yeah, that's not exactly what I was getting at

(Told you it was likely to come off poorly) ;-)

First, I think we actually do a pretty good job of the whole “respect” thing – at least as much as anonymous (and non-anonymous) internet heroes can.

Second, grammar and spelling bother people to different degrees, but if you can make yourself understood, I think everyone realizes this is not the Oxford debating society and rules are much more relaxed. Hell, my wife is highly educated and she’d have trouble spelling “cat” if you spotted her the “c” and the “a” – so I can appreciate that not everyone is the greatest speller/grammarian.

But, what I love to see are comments that contribute to the conversation – if you’ve got something funny to say, say it. If you’ve got something insightful to say, say it. If you disagree with something, disagree. If you want to support a prior comment, knock yourself out. But if you’re just typing to hear (read?) yourself type. . . maybe you should back away from the keyboard for a minute. a2d2 hits the nail on the head – just make sure you’re “adding to the discussion,” in whatever manner. It’s like we’re sitting on a giant back porch talking about the ‘Cats – if you wouldn’t make the comment in that setting (because it would get you punched and/or it makes no sense), why do it here?

Thanks for the support from everyone; glad to know I’m not the only one with this view. And apologies to any I unintentionally offended.

Yep. That’s why I keep a dictionary right beside my PC. I am considered to be a good speller but there are words that I encounter every that I have never seen much less know what they mean. Also in primary school we were taught that there are words in the English language which our spellers referred to as “demon words.” There was an icon of a little devil beside those words. I’ve never forgotten them. Examples were: rough, cough, tough, etc. These words are not phonetic, but, like German, they should be ruff, coff, tuff, etc. But we speak English, not Deutsch. LOL

Very good point.

I keep most of my flippant posting to in-game threads but when I stray into the dark side and degenerate into the “multiple exclamation points, vapid observations, and general inanity” please smack me in the head.

I also look to this site for intelligent discourse, it’s become part of me – just ask my family as gametime approaches and postgame ebbs for any football or basketball game.

by hoboat33 on Nov 4, 2010 12:34 AM EDT reply actions

I think the quality of discussion can be judged by what happens when there are disagreements

This is just from my experience on a few other sites/boards, not just UK or even sports related, but broadly speaking there are two ways of disagreeing with something someone has written:

Situation 1:
Person 1: John Wall’s turnovers are really bad, he needs to cut down on them.
Person 2: OMG!! Why are you being so negative? You should support the team, you are not a true fan!

Situation 2:
Person 1: John Wall’s turnovers are really bad, he needs to cut down on them.
Person 2: A lot of Wall’s turnovers come on the types of plays where he also collects a lot of assists or makes baskets, so he might not be as effective overall if he changed his style to limit turnovers.

It seems like over the last few years there’s been more of the first situation than there was several years ago. That’s what bothers me more than anything, because there’s really no way to have a conversation about anything if that’s the mentality.

I appreciate how difficult it is to express these kinds of concerns. It’s hard to say you don’t like the direction something is headed without coming across as self-righteous or snobbish, even if that’s the furthest thing from your mind.

3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.

Medium Is The Message

Nearly 50 years ago Marshall McLuhan addressed your concerns and amazingly it was decades prior to the introduction of the world’s most ubiquitous and efficient communication medium. No doubt the internet in all its iterations — especially the mobile version (twitter being the prime example) — foments abrupt, concise and quite often inflammatory comments. My advice: Follow the USMC — Compone Accomoda Supera; or in the words of The Eagles: Get Over It.

by Wild Weasel on Nov 5, 2010 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

It does foment it, no doubt.

We will not be “getting over it” here, though. We just need to be more diligent in promoting proper discourse and discouraging (with appropriate decorum) the tendency toward inflammatory rhetoric.

You are right that the Internet itself presents more opportunity to be “… abrupt, concise and … inflammatory …” than otherwise. Peer pressure, though, can be a powerful thing if applied thoughtfully and consistently.

That way none of us has to get over it. We can work to gently correct it, at least in our little corner of the Internet.

Good Luck With Millennials

A noble effort no doubt and I wish you well. You can, with some accuracy I believe, determine the age of the poster from the message content and format.

Rants and raves

Sports are, by definition, things of trivial importance overall but are taken very seriously. Sports fans’ reaction to various happenings are often over the top one way or another, because of the emotional investment made to those causes. So, one may expect somewhat irrational postings to this and other websites, upon further reflection.

The owner of this website could, however, build in a filter to automatically put aside (for further review) all postings containing all capital letters and more than one exclamation or question mark at the end of a sentence.

This issue is a reflection of the problem with email; its very easy to be nasty and send something which you later regret. In times gone by, when we relied on print contained on paper, replying to an article required some thought because of the time involved to do just that. Who hasn’t later rued clicking “send” more than once?

Overall, I do like this website (never heard of KSR). Thanks.

Re: Filter

Probably it could be done. But since I am only the custodian, I don’t have that ability.

Perhaps a future release of the platform will allow that kind of functionality. Till then, it is a manual affair.

Good point

One of the reasons I stop by a lot less is just for the reason NYC says. I don’t want to call anyone out in particular, but I really have a hard time reading posts from a particular handful of posters on here these days. I will read one of these posts and I have no idea what it means or what point the poster is trying to make. I became so frustrated after a while that I just quit reading the comments altogether. Though many old-timers are probably thinking “good riddance”! :)

Anyway, I don’t mean to insult anyone, I know a lot gets lost in translation to the digial word. I’m just letting NYC know he’s not the only one with that sentiment.

Go Big Blue!

by EEWildcat on Nov 6, 2010 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

I will say that you are missed, EEWildcat.

And, your point is something that I think deserves some serious consideration. If people who once provided good insightful comments are no longer commenting because they get frustrated by the level of discourse that our comments section has become (and yes, I agree that things in the comments section have certainly changed in the last 6-9 months around here, and not necessarily for the better), well, I think that’s a problem. How does a discerning blog community grow in a positive manner if its best and most valuable posters no longer participate?

Comment count is needed in order to get things going, so I would just ask that maybe you could find it in yourself to comment a bit more in order to counter the posts to which you find frustrating. It’s not easy, but it’s up to members like you to make yourself heard, not fade into the background. In a sense, be louder with the reason and understanding that you have always possessed in order to combat all the posts you find inane.

This was a good post, NYYCats. I haven’t really said anything until now, because you are so right, it’s so darn hard to come across sincere and non-elitist on the internet sometimes. You don’t have the benefit of facial expressions or tone of voice to help soften or highlight certain words or get your point across in a gentle manner. Good for you, and keep on posting your thoughts, I say. I think at least getting it all out in the open is a better way to go about it than to let your frustration take over and abandon or lose interest in a community that you love. Let the voice of reason and calm be the loudest and most often heard.

Off topic a little

I had to completely quit posting comments on some political blogs. My God it was so horrific to read the hate and venom being spilled from both the Democrats and Republicans. Being an independent made it extremely difficult trying to have a reasonable conversation. I came back here after posting many times just to gather my wits – seriously. is the politicians are playing to the masses. They are merely doing what works to get them elected. There is no rational discourse because most Americans wouldn’t know one if they heard it.
