The CalZone
Does it exist??
Before Monday's game I had read the reports about Calipari planning on using a new "funky" zone. There were several articles out there talking about it. Those stories had the players unable to describe it.
Now, I love the word "CalZone". Sounds like a promotion for Pizza Hut. But, does this thing really exist? I only got to watch the first half of Monday's game (and not very attentively, at that), but I didn't see anything that looked like a zone defense (except a few trapping full-court pressure zones).
Maybe I missed it. What I did see was a lot of confusion on defense and a lack of focus. I did notice that there seemed to be an effort to collapse on the ball when it went inside, which matched up with some of what Coach Cal has said about having to try to do such things to make up for the lack of size inside.
But, where was this fabled zone?
Did I just not notice it?
Curious minds want to know!

Calzone
From what I saw, it wasn’t used. That might be a function of Cal thinking it wasn’t the right opponent, or not the right situation (too close of a game to try something different, risking screwing the game up). I don’t think any of the articles said Calipari had committed to using it during the Oklahoma game, or even at Maui as a whole — just that the possibility exists.
Still, I hope it gets unveiled here soon. It would be fun to see what he came up with, and if it’s effective, whether his “coaching” reputation changes at all because of it.

I would guess it's only for teams with big frontlines
Cal’s normal defense should work just fine for schools like Oklahoma or Washington who don’t have big front lines. But against say, Michigan State I would expect to see it – assuming it’s ready and actually exists and isn’t just some mind game for opponents.
3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.
Its a mental thing
I think what Cal is referring to is sometimes his players seen ‘ZonedOut’ as in mental lapses.
Nick
Same as Dale Brown's
“freak” defense? (yes, I go back that far and even further) :) With Walker and our Mr. Liggins hounding him all night..I predict we will see a version of the “diamond and 1”. With our less than full bench, only 10 players, I expect we will see zone more often this season. But was there anything better than Coach Rupp’s 1-3-1?
Maybe
It’s the 3-2 with Jorts out front in the middle, then he slips back inside when the ball goes to the corner.
That was an interesting zone
but the Cats didn’t play it for many defensive stances. I would like to see it more to see what they can do with it.
