Andrew Sharp, SBNation editor and Wizards fan
has been on this story like white on rice the past couple of days.
For anyone who has not already visited these links, here they are.
First, Sharp gave one of the best rants on this issue that I ever seen in: Suspended Or Not, The Cam Newton Investigation Is Everything That’s Wrong With The NCAA
And now, he has tried to offer some solutions. More or less. If nothing else, it is another great read. See The Cam Newton Investigation Is Everything That’s Wrong With The NCAA: Here’s How To Fix It
A couple of my favorite quotes from Sharp’s initial rant:
That’s how, instead of anything resembling enlightenment, we get stuck submitting to the NCAA’s dark ages-ideals, bowing at the foot of false prophets who make money hand over fist selling this stuff to the masses, all while exploiting some fetishized ideal of an era in amateurism that never existed, asking us to believe that it makes perfect sense for athletes to generate billions and win nothing in return.
The NCAA isn’t Al-Qaeda, but it’s an institution founded on exploitation that perpetrates itself with alternating doses of audacious rationalization and moral zealotry. They thrive by indoctrinating teenagers too naive to know better with backwards ideology too entrenched to question, with propagandist spokesman from the media, ready to pounce at the first hint of dissent.
And now, with the FBI getting involved…
So politicians should ask themselves (with our help), “Why should we continue wasting valuable government resources when the NCAA has the resources to solve the problem on their own?” There are terror cells popping up all over the world, and we’re interviewing boosters in Starkville, Mississippi?
The FBI? Really?
One last thing. I may have been 110% against him back on October 9, but today I am pulling for Newton to get to the title game and win its MVP. All the way.

The NCAA doesnt want to hear how to fix their problems, they have been ignoring them for years
with no ill effects……..lol…

ignorance is apparently bliss (or, in this case, anger?)
The FBI should absolutely be involved if the rumors in this case are substantial. The number of potential federal laws broken if money exchanged hands is quite impressive: potentially fraud, tax evasion, and antitrust, probably more obscure laws as well. Based on the rumored evidence, this is clearly within the FBI’s domestic territory for investigating, and well separated from the NCAA investigation.
As for the NCAA, I really don’t see the need in demonizing them for this case yet. They’ve yet to make any statement, and certainly haven’t been the group to try and destroy Cam Newton’s reputation. That has all been accomplished by the media. Ironic: the media does the damage, blames the NCAA, and everyone jumps on the bandwagon.
The NCAA does not want
to rule against Cam. The national championship game will draw a huge amount of viewers and lots of money. How can they make even more people watch? Controversy. If Auburn makes it to the game, there will be plenty of it to go around. If they don’t, they’ll probably get hit with sanctions.
I woke up feeling BLUE this morning. It's gonna be a great day.
I so agree that the media is the true demon in all of this. They run these kids name through the mud before anything has been proven. Federal privacy laws are thrown out the window.
