Kentucky Football Coach Rich Brooks Retires

Coach Rich Brooks has retired as head coach of Kentucky football, and Joker Phillips has been elevated to the head coaching position as per previous agreement.

Here is some of the reaction:

I'll have comments on this sometime later today.

Good for him.
He closed by saying, "This is the end of the road for the old man’s coaching career."

That kind of says it all to me. He will be missed, but it’s time for him to enjoy his retirement to the fullest.

He has earned the right to "write his own ticket" in retirement

they have to find a way to keep him involved with the program

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

Sad to see you go Rich

Thank you for making UK football relevant.

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...

Thanks Coach Brooks,

I became a UK football fan during your time here. It took me a while to make it, but I am glad I did. Thanks again !! GO CATS !!

I'm not a Brooks fan

But he should be commended for representing the university in a positive light and leading us to big victories against LSU, Auburn and Georgia(2), as well as those three bowl wins, especially the first MCB. The Bear not included, he could be UK’s most successful coach. He’s leaving Phillips in a good spot with some experienced playmakers coming back.

Definitely the best UK coach in my lifetime

If the program can grow from here, it will be entirely due to the foundation he built.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I don't know how old you are..

but I am 31 and agree completely. Best UK coach I have ever seen live, and considering what he had to start with and where we ended as a program, there might be a case to be made that he was the best coach ever at UK. The Bear had a lot more to work with and a lot less parity in competition.

Coach Brooks is Da Man!. gonna miss ya

Brooks for AD!!!

Seriously, Brooks will be missed, but perhaps it was time for a change. He certainly accomplished a ton and put our football team on a strong path, but to some extent things have hit a leveling off point over the last two seasons. I don’t think we’ve gone backwards, but we also haven’t continued to progress.

I don’t lay all of that on Brooks’ shoulders, but it might be that a change is enough to spark more growth (if such growth is possible in the SEC, of course).

Coaching=Salesmanship

I’ve always thought — and experience has backed it up numerous times — that successful coaches would be successful in sales had they so chosen. The Greatest Salesman In The World comments and it certainly would seem to apply to Coach Brooks:

"One of the great undiscovered joys of life comes from doing everything one attempts to the best of one’s ability. There is a special sense of satisfaction, a pride in surveying such a work, a work which is rounded, full, exact, complete in its parts, which the superficial person who leaves his or her work in a slovenly, slipshod, half-finished condition, can never know. It is this conscientious completeness which turns any work into art. The smallest task, well done, becomes a miracle of achievement."

"Other" coach would not have succeeded at UK!

At the time Brooks came, the fan base was not over the hype for Bill Parcells who was ready to come here before receiving the offer to coach the Cowboys. Had Parcells come here, the hype would have brought a few “name” recruits for a couple of years but we still wouldn’t have won more than 4-5 games a season for 3 years because the OVERALL team talent was lacking. I believe Parcells would have left pretty quick once he realized re-building our program would take nearly a decade. He and his staff also may have committed recruiting violations because of their lack of COLLEGE coaching experience. Thanks to coach Brooks we have a foundation on which to grow further (even in the SEC east) and most of the league no longer “expects” to win the UK game.

7-5 year before Brooks came.

Just saying. I don’t want to get into this on the day he’s retiring, but I was a Guy Morris supporter and I don’t think it’s fair to him to say Brooks took over a nothing team. He inherited a winner and a senior QB, that shouldn’t be forgotten. We had some solid years under Brooks, namely this year and the first MCB year, but there were also some really rotten years, such as those first two, and a lot of underachievement. There’s no way the team that beat LSU should have been in the MCB again. I think Brooks represented our school well and is a good guy. But I’m not sure it will equate to future success because we haven’t really won any recruiting battles nor appeared in a statement bowl.

Yup 7-5 the year before Brooks came...

and before scholarship reductions and sanctions. What exactly is your point? You think Morriss would have been better than back to back 2-9 seasons? You are residing in a dream world.

He inherited a winner

Now Joker can hire Mike Leach

as O-Coordinator!!

Daniel I’m very much like you…..could never understand why Barnhart forced Morris out and also agree that Morris certainly didn’t leave a black hole of talent.

I also agree with the others that Brooks has certainly represented the program in nothing but positive terms. Football has changed in the last 10 years with more bowls every year and expanded schedules so I’m not sure he should get all the credit he does but that’s not worth arguing over at this time.

I’m glad that he stepped down for himself and his family and I’m also glad that this gives Joker an opportunity to sink or swim sooner rather than later.

In all seriousness……why not think outside the box and offer the job to Leach. He’s coached here before and we ALL know he’s one of the best offensive minds in the game….let’s go after Leach!!

might be a way for Leach to regain his respect with the world of college athletics

but I dont know…..have to put some thought into this one……..

actually

I figured Papa Brooks was retiring and when I first heard about Leach my first thought was – GET HIM!! Kentucky needs a controversial coach. ’-)

Burnfart didn't "force Morris out"

Morris LEFT FOR B$YL$R…..which didn’t quite pan out for him…..hmmmmm.

I for one am thankful for Brooks. He inherited CRAP and made used it as fertilizer to create a pretty good team. NOT A DOMINANT team but a good team. Captain Obvious would label you folks str8t basketball fans who don’t really understand the nuances of college football. That’s okay, given time and passion you will “get it.” That’s what this blog is for. ;)

Wasn't that much money

especially in relation to SEC HC salaries and UK needed only to match the offer or even come close and Morris would have stayed.

More Bowl Games

I TOTALLY agree with this with a great example being that going 6-6 (2-6 in conference) can get you to a bowl game. Brooks was a class act that’s for sure, but I’d be hard pressed to believe that the addition of bowl games and expanded schedules didnt deserve some credit for at least some of our bowl appearances.

I also cant see giving Joker very much transitional leeway (in terms of time) to keep UK football on an upward swing. He has been here. He knows this team as well as Brooks did. He has been coach-in-waiting since January of 2008 so he should have had adequate time to mentally prepare and wrap his head around that. It’s go time.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Dude

I really like that idea. I mean seriously, there’s no way they would do it, but it would be cool to get Leach.

by daniel81 on Jan 4, 2010 7:11 PM EST reply actions

Well I think it might be a WIN-WIN for

all concerned. I think many feel Joker’s strong points are recruiting and bringing Leach in would take a LOT of pressure off the offense side and let Joker get settled into the Head Coach job. At the same time…..it’d almost be like Wall in a one and done kind of thing but that seems to be working out pretty well for the b-ball team!!

For Leach it would be a return home so to speak and give him the opportunity to keep his hands in while going through the legal mess with TT. I think most would agree that even spending time on his legal pursuits…..he’d still be a better O-Coordinator than anyone else out there.

Coach Brooks-

May God bless and keep you always.
May your wishes all come true. May you always do for others,
And let others do for you. May you build a ladder to the stars,
and climb on every rung.
May you you stay…Forever Young.

May your hands always be busy, and your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation, when the winds of change do shift.
May your heart always be joyful, and your song always be sung.
May you stay…Forever Young.

Thanks Coach, for everything…
