The Big Blue Daily Mail -- South Carolina Edition

Since there is a game against the South Carolina Gamecocks tonight, I wanted to get the news post up early so we can focus on other things later.

I do have one announcement, which is a new widget at the bottom of the right sidebar.  A Sea of Blue is one of a few blogs chosen by the SEC Digital Network to use this new video widget, which will show highlights of selected teams.  I have selected the teams as the Kentucky Wildcats, Tennessee Volunteers and Vanderbilt Commodores.  So you can watch highlights of Kentucky, Tennessee and Vandy men's and women's hoops.  It does increase page load times a bit for the main page, but the highlights are cool, and I encourage you to give it a try and let me have your feedback.

The pre-game for tonight will be up later today as soon as Ken and I finish it, so be looking for that sometime this afternoon.

The news follows the jump.

I am just curious, was Devan Downey John Wall before there was OUR John Wall???

Unless Downey busts Jodie Meeks 54 point effort, SC goes down tonight…..and even then I dont think they have a chance.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

Ah...No.

IMO – Devan Downey is nowhere nearly as talented as John Wall.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

by kentuckygirl0724 on Jan 26, 2010 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

That maybe true

but Wall better come to play. He’s going to have to work to stay with Downey. Downey is about 8 inches shorter than Wall. I haven’t seen consistant defensive speed out of Wall that will stop Downey. Bledsoe might be a different story. He is shorter and I think will be better suited for the matchup. The thing that would hurt UK the most would be if Bledsoe picks up some early fouls. If the team stays focused on the task at hand and not get caught up in Wall vs Downey then the game shouldn’t be a problem. Being on the road will still make it a tough game regardless.

by cthom on Jan 26, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

I think Bledsoe gets the Downey assignment

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...

I agree.

I think Bledsoe is the better defensive option on Downey.

Downey is as talented as Wall...

What he’s not is as athletically gifted.

I agree with the poster that thinks Bledsoe should guard Downey. I’m not sure Downey offensively vs. Wall defensively is a good matchup for you guys.

I wouldn't want that matchup....if for anything else to keep Wall out of foul trouble

Downey is a lot better than people give him credit for. But, Bledsoe regardless is the better defender, IMO.

Exactly

Limit Downey, and USC doesn’t come within 20. By limit, I mean hold him to 25 or less…..he is just too good to be completely shut down.

Wall/Downey

I wasnt really speaking in a man-on-man defensive match up kind of sense. I’m talking flat out skills and athleticism – and I think Wall is the better point guard in that sense.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Downey is a fantastic point guard with blazing speed

like Wall but with a much better outside shot. What sets Wall apart is he is 6’4" with all of that speed. It’s a shame Downey doesn’t have any help this year, but it is also good for us that he doesn’t.

Downey gets the "Who was that?" treatment tonight.

We send so many different guards out to guard him one on one that he doesnt remember who each one is…..

Rotate Bledsoe, Liggins, Harris,Wall, and Dodson in the first half…..in the second, use Dodson, Liggins, and Miller…

Absolutely right about it being up to the rest of our team to win...

Downey will get his points one way or the other. If we don’t have anyone else step up, though, you should win handily.

I'll admit that I'm not terribly confident about this game.

I don’t think an upset is out of the question, especially in front of a packed house. But there are a lot of ifs involved. Those include: us shooting much better than we usually do, us finding an option to Downey, us finding a way to keep you off the offensive boards, etc. etc.

As you probably already know, this isn’t the same Carolina team you faced last year.

Tenken, you have to learn to quit thinking about the "era of which we shall not speak".

Life is much more enjoyable when you erase the last few years of Cat basketball from your memory.

by wklawdog on Jan 26, 2010 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

now, now.

I don’t think the era should be erased completely from memory. We have to remember the past in some capacity, or we are doomed to repeat it, right? And, yes, in hindsight, the last few years of Cat hoops were positively dreadful, but sometimes I think that we needed to go through them in order to get to the happy-go-lucky blissfulness that we have now, you know?

But, in the sense that one is dwelling (dwelling being the key word there) on the past so much so that they can’t enjoy the present and the possibility of the future, well, then, I totally agree, that’s not really productive.

by BigSkyCat on Jan 26, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

John Wall is not a great defensive player, but more than that, we just haven’t really done a very good job defending the three this year.

the question i have is – do the close calls we have mean that we are likely to have a game where the close call is too close (ie, we lose) or have we gotten all the close calls out of our system.

i was not too worried about the USC game (just do not believe one player can beat us) but then i realized the team was on a conf call with president obama at 130 est today – talk about a distraction. it will be interesting to see how the young team reacts, playing a conf game on the road with an brand new #1 ranking after spending the afternoon talking to the president of the USofA!!

sounds to me like he thinks

that no one will ever go undefeated through a season and post season again, including our current UK squad, but UK wins the NC this year. If UK goes through conf play undefeated? (Talk about blowing tops off the roofs round the world!) He’ll be happy to take odds on UK winning IT ALL.

Sounds bout right. I still say they go undefeated all season. I listened to that Cal thing where he called John a “jagoff”, which was funny, but his key point was the bench. How far are THEY going to take us? You’ve seen Liggins improving, when we spell the starters for longer periods, we need players who will keep that intensity UP! Orton IS THE MAN because of him continuing our POST PRESENCE. Stevenson slicing for dunks, Ramone hitting threes, Dodson hitting threes, it’s just wave after wave of players getting in your grill on defense (not so much with some, hence improvement), swiping at the ball, harassing you and then on the other end putting up lobs for dunks or dRAINING 3’s! We know what our starters are going to give us and sometimes they will have a bad night, but that is why the bench has to step up to keep them waves rolling. They roll and UK rolls to undefeated season. I think they are getting it. I also don’t see egos stopping these young men because they have enough of one leading them to compensate for any they may try to develop. ;)

Nah, they are good guys and actually look like they are having FUN. Effing unbelievable fun as a matter of fact. I used to scream (yell real loud) at the TV trying to “coach” the team. I haven’t done that this season. Course, I didn’t get to watch many of the non-conf season so there is that, BUT, now, I find myself watching the games for fun. Even when they are lapsing to the interior too much and leave a man on the wing smoking a blunt and feeling up our cheerleaders as he drains a three, I just breathe deeply and tell myself that they are young AND WE HAVE A 15 POINT LEAD. So yeah, I am enjoying the season and I am glad that it looks like they are too. Cuz got his TEETH ON THE GROUND! TEETH ON THE GROUND!!! Then quietly? went out and scored a double double. (That baseline spin was SICK! Finish WITH a DUNK! Dude is mad!) They are encouraging one another, even when the game is tight, everybody is TALKING. They don’t look away from each other. VERY REFRESHING TO SEE!!! That is the sign of a champion. Maybe an undefeated one as well.

GO BIG BLUE!!

Reading the old war stories brings back memories. I remember when it took me one day to get over drinking ten beers. Now it takes me ten days to get over drinking one. Now I know what my dad mean when he said, “I’m not the man I used to be. In fact, I don’t think I ever was.”

Rankings and UK

For anyone who read yesterday’s thread about UK in the rankings, I recommend this piece by Ken Pomeroy where he reflects on why there is a difference between his system ranking of UK and the AP/Coaches ranking.

3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.

by JLeverenz on Jan 26, 2010 4:13 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Sounds to me like Pomeroy is trying to quiet the crowd.......

but I care not for his system. If folks like to use it, then fine….they are more than entitled…..I simply know that there is no rankings system in the world, and never has been that can predict what a team is going to do with certainty. Polls are simply that, polls. I am not only not concerned with his system, I will be more than happy to see it fail this year. Of course the system he has cannot fail in the end of the year because it catches up with itself after the last game is played.

i do find his notion of teams

playing defense only when they “had to” very interesting. Only because, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT THIS TEAM HAS BEEN DOING!!!! (Arkansas game was the only one I"VE seen that they played with consistancy on defense for all of but 3 minutes of the game, even at garbage time the subs were GUARDING!)

I thought it was funny that he suggested that the team only play’s five minute games because they are that bored. I CAN DEFINITELY SEE THIS!! Hence the 10-7 record Cal keeps talking about. If these Cats don’t get after it on defense (LIGGINS SHOULD PUT A LIL LIGHT ON FOR YA) they will LOSE. If you don’t learn to play defense for ALL 40 MINUTES then you will not win a national championship, no matter who ya got on your pine or the hardwood.

polls ARE ridiculous and great for rah rah-ing. great for debate but as predictors…almost as good as my Magic 8 Ball. Not as much mojo though.

he had good some good points. and it sounds like if the Cats wanted to move up in his poll they would put the beatdown on teams defensively while still scoring at a high clip. lovely in the IO world it is. lovely in the real one as well, but sometimes a player just goes “bananas” and screws up the best laid plans of mice and men….i know i didn’t but i think i did. ;)

He's not trying to "quiet the crowd" he's putting some thought into why the difference exists

Which was mostly the point of me posting the link: it’s the process. It’s the willingness to think about the situation and examine the reasons as to why it exists. That’s how we learn things, not just in basketball but in all areas of life.

If you want to say that no system is perfect and nothing can predict with certainty than you are certainly entitled to do so, but
a) it’s kind of boring and it leaves no room for interesting discussion
b) it assumes that there is nothing new to know or understand about evaluating basketball teams
c) the “absolute certainty” is a red herring: evaluating and predicting performance is an exercise with a spectrum of results, not binary

And if you are waiting for his system to “fail” then you’re in for a long wait. Aside from the fact that I don’t even know what you mean by “fail”, it has proven to be quite robust over the years and that isn’t going to change anytime soon.

3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.

great for debate

not good for predicting outcomes. very robust indeed. lots of chatter about it…really sounds like fun. i liked the article. just don’t have faith in ranking systems.

ha ha ha!!

yes, i realize that my lack of faith limits me on exploring the statistical cosmos that is college basketball. i still like to eyeball a team then shake my Magic 8 Ball. ;)

what I meant was that his system gets more accurate as the season wears on.....

the reason it does that is because it does a wonderful job of telling you how good a team is AFTER each game……not before…..I dont mind the system, just dont believe in it is all….nothing personal against Pomeroy

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

A major weakness in his system is

it fails to factor in the human element of sportsmanship. Cal called off the team once it had proven to him and themselves that it could do the 40 min defense thing. The MOV slipped only because he didn’t feel the need to totally humiliate another group of human beings. Thus we are ranked lower as a result. This has absolutely no bearing on future performance. There are other things that cannot be measured from the stats as well. This is the wonderful, unmeasurable area that makes us watch the games, unsure of the outcome, holding our breath, collectively cheering or crying and coming back again and again for more of this divine torture we call UK basketball.

Will you stop!

Jeez. It’s a tool.

It took him a lot of work, it’s sophisticated and it does a very good job. We all know that it isn’t perfect, we all know that there are things that it doesn’t measure. You are a master of the obvious today.

If you have a better system that is not based on purely subjective judgment, you should publish it. Pomeroy’s defense of his system is rational. Your attack is purely subjective. And year after year, his system does a good job of coming up with the best teams, and is one of my go-to resources.

Nothing is going to be perfect, but let’s not let the perfect be the enemy of the good here.

Actually until the Arkansas game we never

once looked like a #1 team and because of the level of play we had against very inferior competition we played more like a #9 team. But we are UK fans and we do get carried away now and then.

by Grasslands1 on Jan 26, 2010 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

That's true.

We have been pretty good all year, but we have played a lot of close games against teams we should have beaten convincingly. That is a harbinger for a loss, and we have been very lucky to avoid one so far. I think many people have just forgotten how many close games against inferior competition we have played.

But we are clearly improving. How much will be a bit more evident, one way or the other, after tonight. Unfortunately, we need a better test before we can declare ourselves king of the world. Our SOS is simply abysmal, and I can’t tell you for sure how good this team is at this point against players of similar talent — and neither can anyone else.

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan

by Glenn Logan on Jan 26, 2010 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

And the really ridiculous part is the our SOS is not our fault this year.

We can do nothing about our in conference games, and any other year, our OOC schedule would be more than adequate with the exception of 1 or maybe 2 games.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

I offered up a different look at the scientific approach to polling

here

It takes into account all of the subjective things I could find that really mattered……
It seemed simple enough for me……

Thanks for that link

Say what you will about his system, but that was a very well written article and very insightful.

I had never considered the comparison to the ’06 Zags before, but it has a ring of truth.

I have a much deeper respect for Ken Pomeroy after reading it.

Again thanks.

You non believers need to

stop worrying about this game. SC just not good enough to stop us tonight. I am just curious to see if we come out as hungry as we did against Arkansas.

by Grasslands1 on Jan 26, 2010 4:19 PM EST reply actions

I think that curiosity exists for a lot of us Grasslands

I will freely admit it. :-)

The President says..

in his call the the coach and the team, besides thanks for the effort in the Hoops for Haiti, he expects to see them in the Championship game, and to scrimmage with the team sometime, with Wall on his team because he doesn’t want to lose. Let the love continue!

I want to thank all you on ASoB

You will never know what you have done replacing my dad. He started me out at a very young age on our Cat’s. Now as I am watching and reading I still think “I need to call Dad” I can’t do that as He left us a few years back. He was my hero, He never hunted or fished. He was a mechanic. He taught me everything I know about life. I got to spend all my young life working with and for him. He gave away more money than He ever made through bad debt and etc. Sorry about the rambling. I just needed to tell Dad about our Cat’s being #1 again!

Happy Days are here again The sky is all ways BLUE again Happy days are here again !

To OLDCAT70

I hear you. The fondest memories I have of my dad are listening to Cawood on the radio and getting up early on Sunday morning to drive to Crosley Field to watch the Reds (I now know why he hated double-headers). It’s not just dads either. In her later years, my mother couldn’t remember what day of the week it was, whether she had eaten, or whether she had taken her medicine, but she knew the names of all the UK players. And did she ever love Tubby! She always said he seemed so nice and so smart. I can’t disagree. I’ve missed those UK glory days of the 90’s, but there are some things I miss much more.

My Dad still calls me after every game that we dont see together......

usually it is to complain about something the Cats didnt do right, but he doesnt seem to have many complaints lately….
