A Backhanded Compliment by Forde?

Yesterday after the win, I began looking around the internet and seeing what they sports pundits were saying...I saw this article by Pat Forde who I generally really like.  Since Cal has been hired I think I have heard that Forde dislikes Cal and all that. I didn't think that was true until I saw this article. At first, it seems that he is really happy for Kentucky but then then slides in some negativity. Maybe I am being to senstive though, but watching ESPN last night, I still don't think these Cats have gotten the attention they deserve. After saying last week that the Cats were for real, Katz went on to say "they haven't beaten anyone", then one dude said "did you see what they did to Arkansas" and Andy goes "Its Arkansas", and well no one mentions that this Arkansas almost beat the press favorite Texas. Hmmm. Just really maddening. Cal is a coach that everyone loves to hate......jealousy. He is the best recruiter in the nation. He is a reallly good coach as well. Kentucky, well she is the best program in the country. She has the most passionate fan base in the world. She has all the wins to prove that she is the best too............Cal plus Kentucky-a marriage made in heaven but the most hated marriage I have seen in years. I think that is why we may never get the respect from the media that we deserve.  Anyway, here is the link to the article:

Forde just wanted his crow to be seasoned properly.....

makes it more palatable when being forced to eat it. Especially in light of his BFF Pitino’s struggles of late.Besides, his being employed by ESPN makes everything he says suspect anyway……lol

Forde is...

biased and always will be since he is like any other viewer of college basketball. But he does seem to stick his opinionated foot in his mouth more than what I’ve seen from any other analyst on ESPN or CBS for that matter (outside of the ridiculous Seth Davis). Whenever I read articles written by Forde, I read his underlining fluff (and Kentucky hate) but then I look at some of his other reasonable points and take the good with the bad. Bobbie Knight is coming in a close 2nd in the race of irritation.

I cried myself to sleep (literally), pounding my pillow the night Laettner made me hate Duke. I would still love to punch Laettner in the face!

Forde

has always been favorable to Kentucky except when it comes to Cal. I think its more about his hatred for Cal then his hate for Kentucky.

ten, what resourses would Forde have to any insight into Calipari that the readers or others have right here in Kentucky?
You actually think they have more information availbale to them they the Sea Of Blue does?
A major sports magazine and multiple sports networks? C’mon, they just read sports blogs like we do to get their information.

I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.

not really

He has always had an anti-UK bias going back to his days at the C-J

First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...

and he stepped it up about 15 notches when Pitino went to UL.......

he has bet the farm on UL, and has to ride that pony til he can no longer stand the seat. Forde has his own agenda…….he is enjoying the attention from stirring the pot, or maybe its from all that calling the kettle black???

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

I don't get it...

…who cares what these guys think?

By posting items about their columns and discussing them, you’re only demonstrating their ability to do their job – creating controversy and presenting opinions that get people to react. These guys don’t get paid because their predictions and views are correct, they get paid because of their readership and the volume of discussion they generate.

If you really don’t like Pat Forde, don’t read his stuff. And if you do read it, why post something complaining about him on ASoB? Number one: you’ll be “preaching to the choir,” and number two: you’re implicitly illustrating that he’s doing his job – getting you to talk about him.

Well

my post was more about the national perception. Like I said I generally like Forde. He is one of the most unbiased reporters out there. I just think that the respect we want will not be there even if we win number eight.

by tenken on Jan 24, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

I think being voted # 1 by the press and coaches

is as much respect we can get at this point.

We’ll get the ultimate respect in accordance with how we perform in the tournament. I don’t care how much “respect” the nation has for us if he have another banner.

Understand

please that this is just a talking point. I am not angry good grief I am ecstatic right now. These guys/pundits will not ever pull me down. Its just a talking point that is all. I am pretty sure that its what we do on here.

by tenken on Jan 24, 2010 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, I totally agree.

I didn’t mean to come off in any way other than conversant. I’m just not sure what kind of “respect” you want that we’re not currently in line to get, you know?

by mrmondaynite on Jan 24, 2010 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

Got you :)

Well, I guess I just wish that the boys would get some love from the media. But thinking about it you have to admit this team is pretty special. I myself is just now starting to believe in them and I am a KENTUCKY FAN. May take a little longer for them. :)

by tenken on Jan 24, 2010 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

Its a disgrace!

That was the national edition of Forde. I’m sure he will come out with a different one for us in Kentucky. How in the world could a man who is so biased against us be on national television? Or the others on ESPN who have questioned the things that happening in Lextington.
‘We won’t have to worry about this stuff as soon as the viewing numbers fall below the membership of ASOB. Until then I guess we’ll have to put up with it.

Unfortunately it cant be like the old days when Coach Rupp would simply ban anyone he didnt like

from being around the team…….lol…..and he had all of the right people in the right places to make it stick too….now everyone gets to have their own opinion…..AND voice it……grrrrrrr……democracy……lol

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

I think

remembering how Cal handled the Memphis press, he would be up for that too :). All is good right now but in the upcoming years when we have a rough patch, watch out for the “mean” side of Cal against the press.

by tenken on Jan 24, 2010 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

you know, this doesn't bother me at all

Maybe I just have outrage fatigue, but I thought what he said was reasonable. We DON’T really have one great signature win, largely because the usual big-ticket nonconference rivals that we beat are turning out to kind of suck (thanks for nothing, guys). It’s really nothing against Kentucky to say that…all the team can do is play their schedule (which is pretty similar to schedules we’ve had in the past—these same teams just aren’t as good as they have been) and they’ve won every one they played. Our schedule strength isn’t that good though. Of COURSE if an undefeated team gets to number one with a weaker schedule, the knock of them is going to be “they haven’t played anyone.”

I really don’t think we Kentucky fans have a leg to stand on about not getting respect from the media. We are covered CONSTANTLY. It’s crazy. We are definitely THE team this year, as far as the sports media are concerned. You can’t go to the ESPN or the cbs sports page without seeing something UK. Some of the attention is negative, but most isn’t, and I think you just have to take the negative as a small price to pay for having everyone talking about us again : )

I agree that Forde does not appear to like Calipari very much, but he’s still one of my favorite reporters. I just think he’s an excellent sportswriter, and he is extremely Kentucky-centric.

He

is one of my favs too :)

Concur

I think it is easy for us as Big Blue fans to get a wee bit sensitive. Actually a lot sensitive.

When I read Forde’s article I thought it was extremely positive about UK. Yes, he did point out that there is (possibly) a knock against the team, but it is a legitimate criticism. And it isn’t something that he hammers at.

We can’t get to a point where we get irate because someone makes a pretty clear statement about our weakness of schedule. RPI-wise, Kentucky doesn’t look very “pretty”.

But look at how Forde is very positive about the team, how he puts in the quote from Pelphry and draws the connection to the common foe of Texas. How he dismisses the claim that the Cats are a weak outside shooting team.

Forde was even (mostly) positive about Cal.

If we get our noses bent out of shape by this article, then we’ll be in for real trouble when we encounter something that is completely biased.

I’m just chillin’, and enjoying the appropriate accolades.

Very good points Blue Girl!
i agree on Forde. He didn’t get on ESPN being unable to write and point out things the readers need th consider. I like you style/
