UK Basketball: Individual Statistics and Trends
Eighteen games into the season, and the University of Kentucky stands at a heavenly 18-0. Even more blissful to Big Blue fans everywhere is the fact that UK is on the verge of being the No. 1 ranked team in all the land (with a little cooperation from our good buddy John Pelphrey and his Arkansas Razorbacks) for the first time since March of 2003. Who woulda thunk it?
For a comprehensive look at how the 'Cats have attained such lofty achievements, we'll scour the player's individual statistics, as well as delve into developing trends among those who play for our pleasure. Follow me to a bean counter's nirvana, after the jump:
Note -- There seems to be a quirk in the system that won't allow me to properly align the stats under the heading, "SEC Play." I apologize for the asymmetrical look of the column.

John Wall Trend Notes
Wall has shot under 42.0% in two of three SEC games.
In the first eight games of the year, Wall made 50 of 89 field goal attempts (56.2%); in his last nine games he is 46-104 from the floor (44.2%).
In his first 12 games, Wall made 12 of 27 three-point attempts (44.4%); in his last five games, Wall is 3 of 16 from beyond the arc (18.8%). In those same five games Wall has made 21-40 two-point shots (52.5%).

In the five games in which Wall took single-digit shots, he averaged 9.0 assists; in the 12 games in which he took double-digit shots, he averaged 6.0 assists.
UK freshman records in peril -- Wall is only 174 points away from Rex Chapman's freshman scoring record of 464 points, which he attained in the '86-'87 season (29 games; 16.0 points per game). If UK makes it to the SEC Tournament championship game, and the Elite Eight, then they would have 20 games left to play. Wall would need to average only 8.7 points per game to shatter Chapman's record.
Wall is only 10 assists shy from breaking Dirk Minniefield's freshman assist record at UK, which stands at 126 assists in 34 games (3.7 assists per game), set in the '79-'80 season.
Overall single-season assist record in peril -- Wall is 116 assists away from breaking Roger Harden's record 232 assists (6.4 assists per game) in the '85-'86 season. If Wall plays in 20 more games, he needs to average 5.8 assists per game to break the record.

Stepping up
As far as the numbers go, it looks like the UK player who’s really stepping up against better competition is Eric Bledsoe. The guy is a fighter.
A good snapshot of the season thus far
As competition stiffens, I hope the team responds to the challenge.
Another well put together piece Mr. Howlett.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Stats give me a headache....lol.....W-L is all that matters to me.....
but its a nice breakdown there KH…..now where is the tylenol???
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
Thanks Ken!
Have to agree with the Blues man, looks like Eric is bringing the heat! Numbers would look better if he hadn’t try to “overplay” a bit last game… Freshman learning curve!
If your wings don't sweep....
Bledsoe seems to be pulling his game together very nicely, indeed
But, I will hate to lose him to the NBA, if that’s what happens.
Beginning of the season
I’d have so “no way”… Now I’m not so sure?? His game is a lot like Jodie’s and he’s doing OK for himself, right?? LOL Would hate to see him go but a guy’s gotta do what a guy’s gotta do!
If your wings don't sweep....
I'm like you
Bldsoe’s game has come a loong way in a short time. Most impressive to me is the incredible strifdes he’s made with his outside shooting, which was the knock on him coming out of HS. His defense is also much better than the typical freshman guard.
As you know, the NBA drafts on potential, and he has tons of it, but with that being said, he could benefit from another year of college. I just haven’t figured out why yet :)
But, I’ve never, ever begrudged a player the oportunity to fulfill his dream, and if he’s projected as a top 20 pick or so, I would not blame him one bit if he left.
Yeah...
Certainly enjoy this team while we can!! We started the year with PPat & JW going pro (no questions asked) and now it looks like Eric & Cuz have played their way into the draft too… Hate to see it, but in reality it’s a reflection on how much work they’ve put in on their individual game and (smaller piece of the puzzle) Cal moving them forward as a mentor/coach.
If your wings don't sweep....
good article
Thanks good overview of player efforts and results. Stats can be revealing in many ways. Reading these positive reviews is a pleasure as is this season.
I was reading pages this am and came on a reminder of the agony of last year. BCG lives in a list of worst SEC fits. http://tinyurl.com/yjts5cx
I was also reading Arkansas info. I am looking forward to the game and can only hope the plan includes defensive efforts for Clark.
Harris and Liggins need to be all up in Clark's grill all game.
Bledsoe too, maybe, but with Clark’s lightning fast release, I’d rather see someone taller on him.
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.
--O.W.
Hogs
gave the Gators a good game last night… Was watching bits and pieces of it and groaned when Jimmy Dykes, speaking of Clark, said he makes “violent cuts”. Hmmmm, Jimmy, didn’t you say the same thing about Jodie last year?? LOL
If your wings don't sweep....
Clarke scares me as well
As I wrote on another thread this week; he’s one of the best spot-up shooters I’ve ever seen, plus, he’s added a nice dribble-drive to his repertoire. He and Fortson should be job-1 for the UK defenders.
Glad you liked the overview.
Cal was talking about Clarke on his call-in show
He said he’d be taking shots from 50 feet out with confidence the way that we’ve been defending the three.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Clarke is the closest thing to Mark Price (Ga. Tech) I've seen
since Price played college ball 20 years ago.
He has to be defended as soon as he crosses mid-court. I’m sure he’s giving Cal nightmares.
He plays like Prince did in that game vs. UNC several years ago when he opened the game with five straight threes from all over the court.
Can you tell I like the kid? :)
One Man takes Clarke out.........DeAndre......
he has been waiting all year to showcase what he can do……I say put him in and tell him he stays until Clarke gets 10 points or 3 3’s……he can play until that happens, and we live without Miller’s points while DeAndre is in…..and if he scores on top of being able to defend Clarke, then its a bonus
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
It'll have to be a team effort, because the Hogs will set
numerous picks to get him open. They especially like to run the curl. Also, UK will have to be very aware of the secondary break, they like to find Clarke in a mismatch, i.e. either a big man on him allowing him to utilize his ability to drive, or a guard, in which case he just rises and shoots regardless of how closely guarded. In that respect, UK needs to ball deny big-time, something they have not done well at all this year.
But, I do like the idea of Liggins on Clarke. As far an an individual defender, he’s the best UK has to offer at the guard/swing spot, although Bledsoe is becoming a very solid defender.
I am generally not a stat person,
but I like your post Ken. There is something I can’t quite put my finger on, that made these not so painful for me. Maybe it was the little alignment quirk or the “bean counter’s nirvana” reference…..lol….
I guess we need to be on a breaking records watch with this team. Who could have imagined UK would show such a turn around in less than a year?
Everyone knows the thing I needed to see was fun, and I am seeing loads of that. And yeah, I guess with each win the team has more fun, so I will take those too. I do want them to have the most fun possible. :-)
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
Thanks a2d2
Believe me, when I saw the way the columns were aligned after posting, I was … uh, not happy:)
This team certianly seems to be having lots of fun … one of the by-products of winning.
As Observed, As Expected
Numbers show Patrick Patterson is not playing as a pre-season first-team All-American should. Whether it’s his responsibility to step up or a change in the system to get him more involved, UK cannot realize its potential without greater production from the 4. 60% FT shooting is inexplicable.
"The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale." --Thomas Jefferson
that took a lot of work
thanks Ken, very interesting. Yes, PP needs to be more in the game, whether it’s him, or his teammates not getting him the ball, the team needs him to be a major factor
Your welcome, blueh
And of course I agree with your assessment, as does the rest of the BBN, I’m sure.
goin to the game tomorrow
I’ll tell Pat what we think he needs to do……lol
Records
Would it be better if the records were based on the averages per game rather than the totals, due to the difference in number of games played?

Welcome to A Sea of Blue
I’m not sure what you mean by “records”
I’m not trying to be a smart aleck … could you expound?
Records in peril
Sorry. It was a late night post:). I was referencing the records on the verge of being broken by our freshmen.

Aah, no problem at all
I put the current season record averages in parenthesis, sprinkled throughout the individual paragraphs.
I’m wondering, if in UK’s history, any team has boasted five record-setting performances by individual players? If that indeed happens this year … what an accomplishment!
Freshman records..
I get where you are coming from..IE: How important is John Wall’s potential frosh scoring record when he could have as many as 11 more games to achieve that in? One of the good things about early entry to the NBA, is that it will take a landmark player/effort to surpass Dan Issel’s all time mark.
"Ignorance, I can fix, stupidity, well that's another matter!"-82nd Airborne NCO
In this instance
Wall will probably beat Chapman’s per game scoring average, and he’ll destroy Minniefiled’s assist per game average.
Harden’s all-time assist mark was set while he averaged 6.4 apg, and Wall will more than likely beat that mark handily as well.
Cousins will also beat Mill’s per game rebound average, as he also beats his rebound record. Magliore set the blocked shot record in 40 games, which is teh most games Cousins can play in this year. So if he beats his total, he’ll obviously beat his per game avg.
But I get your point. Also, UK sets those (record) standards, not me.
You're right about Issel
I don’t see that record ever falling. It would take a kid like PPat to stay four years to break it, and I just don’t see anyone that talented staying for four.
It would have to be a "Jeff Shepard/Chris Mullins" style player..
Whom the pundits would think weren’t good enough for the NBA..of course Mullins proved them wrong..but I’m sure you get my drift..
