Gillispie in Rehab.....Everyone Breathes a Sigh of Relief
With former UK head basketball coach Billy Gillispie
entering rehabat the John Lucas Center in Houston a lot of questions are going to be floated. EDITED 9-9 @ 9:00PM.
Former coach Billy Gillispie has entered rehab in Houston at a facility which specializes in handling sports figures and coaches and the stresses they face which are different from those which the general public might face. A lot of people are going to make jokes, a lot of people are going to say "I told you so!". Resist the urge. Bite your tongue. Keep them to yourself. There is a time for everything in this crazy world, and there will be a time, hopefully, when Billy Gillispie can look back at all of this and be able to chuckle about how things were. This is not the time. This is the time when well-wishing and e-mails, and comments should all be positive and directed towards the man getting the help he needs.
Anyone who has ever witnessed alcoholism first hand will tell you that there will be a lot of soul-searching,a lot of self-examination, and a lot of pain involved with his recovery. The man does not need snide comments, cute remarks, and insensitive blogging directed at every mistake he has ever made. We of the Big Blue Nation have been labeled as a group of loud-mouthed incessant boors by the general public, and that is stating it lightly. We need to rise above all of the normal nonsense and show that we not only have heart, but we understand that anyone can fall prey to the stress and strain of living your life under a microscope and trying to carve out a place in this world of sports. UK would be a tough job for anyone who had everything go right. Coach Gillispie had a few things go wrong. Maybe now we can all understand what may have contributed to that and wish the man well in his recovery and his struggle to get back to where he once was.
Admitting failure is never easy. Admitting you have a dependency problem is a nightmare. The man is going to see enough grief. Let's not have any of it come from us. We have had enough shots at him already. This is not a Cats jersey being sent to someone, this is not a loss in a tournament game. This is a man's life we are talking about here. Let us handle it, and ourselves accordingly.
Best wishes Coach, hope to see you back out there soon. Everyone deserves another chance, make the most of yours.
Note: as of 9:00pm on Sept 9, a story is now being generated that Coach Gillispie is only "considering" checking into rehab, and has not yet entered as was previously reported. I would say this is just a lot of blogger's nonsense, but Gillispie's attorney representing him in the DUI matter will not confirm that he has checked in. This could prove to be a big mistake if indeed the man has a problem with alcoholism.

Good for him
The first step in getting better is admitting you have a problem. All the best.
First time I shot her, shot her in the side.
Hard to watch her suffer, but with the second shot she died...

I float around the Niners Nation blog
NFL sites are crazy busy. Even this site is dwarfed by comparison.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

The first step
Is the hardest. I have to admire him for admitting he needs help. Not many alcoholics in my life ever admitted the fact. He is a good coach and he will get a new job coaching in the future. My prayers are with him during his recovery. It won’t be easy but he is a tough guy and he will be a better person in taking the first step.

Proud
I am so proud of Billy for this. He is a very strong man and I wish him all the best.
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Good for him....
I’m sure he thought about it long and hard. Glad he was able to take that first step. My prayers are with him.

Rec'd. Nice work, ABC.
And best of luck to Gillispie. Hopefully you can shed your demons and let your talent shine through.
Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.

Happy For Coach Gillispe (First Step Is Toughest)
And history repeats.
Rupp = legendary coach. Hall = very good but not legendary. Sutton = good coach, alcohol problem but got help, did well after that.
Pitino = legendary coach. Tubby = very good but not legendary. Gillispie = good coach, alcohol problem but getting help, hopefully does well in the future.
Calipari = legendary coach (I hope).

Ah... Let me edit this title line
I was about to say “I’ll drink to that!”… but I think it would be inappropriate given the context.
We can only hope that your pattern holds true.

Billy has a commitment problem
He couldn’t commit to a marriage. He couldn’t commit to a contract at UK. He can’t commit to a commitment to a treatment facility.
He may have an addiction, but it also seems he doesn’t have the courage to commit to anything. He seems to have a big problem with his ability to succeed at anything.
He needs lots of different kinds of help.
