Why Is Lones Seiber Still Our Kicker?

Lones Seiber is an absolutely awful kicker.  Rich Brooks didn't notice that last year?  Why didn't he try and recruit a kicker?  My cousin tried out as a walk-on this year with a couple of other guys and none of them made it.  I think Brooks either has no faith or just doesn't care about special teams at all.  Why not let Randall Cobb try?  He seems to be doing everything else for our offense.

Kicker...

ive been wondering this same question since LAST year… how frustrating.

Lets get it on!!!!

D!

I was waiting for a post like this ever since I saw it on your Facebook status. Generally, I have to agree. UK Athletics’ web site indicates Seiber has hit just 38 of 63 FG attempts (prior to this season). That its, as you say, awful. As I recall, he was praised coming in because all of his high school kickoffs were touchbacks. He was also on the All-SEC Freshman team 3 years ago (as voted by the coaches). Today, his occasional incompetence did not affect the outcome. However, it has in the past, and it ostensibly will again if he doesn’t change.

terrible

60% on field goals? I don’t think Brooks is sending him out there for long ones either.

I did not see anything great from his kickoffs either.

Thats a good question....

Seiber certainly hasnt been particularly good. However, how do you they didn’t try to recruit a kicker. How do you know what he looks like in practice. I think Brooks and company are smart enough to see who the best kicker on the team is. This question is not black and white.

I don't question that he's the best K on the team.

I fault Brooks & Co. for not recruiting a replacement over the last few years. If Seiber is the best, the quality of kicking talent we have is extremely poor. Who cares what happens in practice?! It’s the games that counts. It’s the game we could lose b/c of another missed gimme FG that counts. And don’t say he “works the hardest” in practice, so he should play, a la Billy Gillispie.

WHY..???

We have a big opening game 42-0 win, on the road…

Why single out (1) player… He probably feels awful as it is…

I don’t think he misses them on purpose…

Great win CATS..!!! Lonas will have to get more consistent for sure, but lets give him more then one 43 yd attempt before we start calling for is head…

I bet if Hartline would have thrown an INT his first attempt, we would be screaming for Fiddler..? I think that’s how he spells it..

It's not just this game, Vince.

It’s his career 60% average. That’s poor.

by mrmondaynite on Sep 5, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions

And I guarantee you that if he misses a game-winner,

or we lose by 2 when he missed an easy FG in a game, you’ll start “calling for his head.”

It wasn't really a road win

41,000 in attendance and I think most were UK fans. With that being said, I get a good kick out of UK fans heading to another state to fill a stadium. Granted, PB Stadium is on the banks of our River but… Perhaps Miami Alum boycotted because the stadium doesn’t serve wine and cheese.

No matter where you're at, there you are

Most of my law school friends who are Miami alum

don’t care. They all stayed in Columbus for the OSU game.

You're obviously not much of a reader, are you Vince?

“WHY..??”, because this can become a serious problem if we don’t fix it. Yes, we won the game. I’m glad we won the game, but Seiber missing that field goal in such a low-pressure situation makes me worry about what he will do when kicking in a close football game again a tougher opponent. Did you not see the number of close games that were decided by 3 points or less yesterday? Do you really want to miss the chance of beating someone like LSU or Tennessee this year because we have a kicker that can only make PATs?

1st kick of the season...

which happened to be 43 yds, and he’s not aloud to be rusty..??

Please…

Look, he’s not the greatest kicker UK’s ever had, but obviously he’s the best the coaching staff can put on the field…

You’re obviously not much of a reader, are you Vince?

What the heck is that supposed to mean..?

No, he's not allowed to be rusty...

unless he hasn’t practiced for the past 5 months, which he has. He’s a specialist who will be called on 5-6 times a game on average. He’s not doing his job; thus, criticism is warranted. To me, missing a FG from within 50 yards is equivalent to a turnover. He needs to improve. You said it yourself – he’s not the best K we’ve ever had…which I feel is an understatement. He has to be last place among UK kickers who have attempted, say, at least 10 FGs.

Seiber

I think whining about Seiber still being our kicker has pretty well run it’s course. Forget the kick yesterday his past record of kicks in high pressure situations is pretty sub par but Brooks seems to think Seiber gives us the best chance to win at that position and seeing as how he’s the coach and makes the decisions I think that settles the matter.

LSU

IIRC, he nailed some very high pressure kicks in 2007.

by GoLightning on Sep 6, 2009 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

Yes

He was actually pretty good by my recollection in ‘07. I don’t know what has happened to him.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

To Answer The Question

Because he’s the best on the roster. To elaborate:

1) Seiber is obviously at best mediocre and mediocrity in place kickers is a surefire road to losses.
2) That he is the best available is a dissentient commentary on recruiting.
3) With the arrival of Joseph Mansour the problem seems to have been addressed.

Seiber has kicked with pain most of his career.

I just read this story about Seiber from the Ky Kernel. Did you know the longest he has been at one place is Kentucky? His dad was in the Air Force and he plans to do the same after he graduates. You’ll never hear me say one bad thing about his kicking. He’s as disappointed as we are. So think about this the next time you ridicule him.

I understand and respect your point, but...

I don’t give athletes free passes just because they’ve had a rough life. Just like I wouldn’t give an employee a free pass to do their job poorly because they’ve had a trying past.

Thank you for your comments.

But one thing I did not know all this time was about his hip injury since HS that has followed him to UK. You have to respect him for playing through pain, even now. He is the best we have at the position and he puts forth his best effort every time he is out there. We tried Tydlaka (spelling) last season for 4 games and he was no better.

Anyway as WW said we have a new kicker coming next season in Joseph Mansour. You can follow his senior season with Jody Demling at the CJ.

The young man isn't missing them on purpose

Not having a good second kicker is something someone should ask the coaches about. As long as the one we have is trying I have no problem.
I guess LaGrange Georgia doesn’t have a kicker that wants to come north. Seems we look there first.

by ParisGuy on Sep 11, 2009 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

Lagrange does have a kicker coming north actually

Tyler Mansour committed to UK a while back.
