Blogpoll Ballot Week 4: Still Searching for Clarity

Well, here we are at week four of the football season.  With a ton of upsets this weekend, the picture below the top three becomes even more muddled than last week.

My preliminary ballot follows after the jump, but I am not too sanguine about anything past #4.  I am beginning to consider the body of work and quality of the competition more as we go along, but I don't think it yet gives us a clear picture of reality yet.

Star-divide

Here's my ballot:

RankTeamDelta
1 Florida 1
2 Alabama 1
3 Texas 2
4 LSU 2
5 Virginia Tech 3
6 Cincinnati 15
7 Boise State 4
8 Iowa
9 Houston 7
10 Southern Cal
11 TCU 4
12 Oklahoma
13 Ohio State 1
14 Oklahoma State 1
15 Oregon
16 Missouri
17 Miami (Florida) 8
18 Brigham Young 1
19 Penn State 15
20 Georgia 2
21 Auburn
22 Michigan 2
23 Kansas
24 Georgia Tech 1
25 UCLA
Last week's ballot

Dropped Out: California (#5), Mississippi (#7), Florida State (#17), North Carolina (#18), Nebraska (#20), Washington (#25).

Questions and comments:
  • How good is Florida, really?  Beating up on Kentucky is okay, but by my reckoning have played the 40th toughest schedule so far and have not actually been tested, unless you consider 2-2 Tennessee a test.
  • Alabama looks for real, but their schedule so far is even weaker than Florida's.
  • The top ten team who has played the toughest schedule so far is Virginia Tech, followed by Southern Cal and LSU.  of the the three, only LSU remains unscathed.
  • I'm a little suspicious of Houston in the top ten, not just because they are CUSA, but because they won't play a likely top 25 team for the rest of the season.
  • How good are the Cincinnati Bearcats?  They move up huge in my poll this week, but I am suspicious of their #100 schedule so far.  I think I have them too high.
  • What do you folks think of Oregon?  I mean, they obliterated highly -ranked California like they were a Sun Belt team.  Do you think that says more about the Ducks, or the Bears?
  • Washington beats USC, then loses to Stanford.  Feh.
  • UCLA is 3-0 after beating a pretty fair Kansas State team. I have them eking into the top 25.  Comments?
  • Virginia Tech just crushes Miami after they looked like the real deal.  The road is unfriendly everywhere, I guess, but what do you think of the Hokies in the top ten?
  • I gave Penn State a wallop, but was it too much?

Alabam's schedule is weaker than Florida's?

Really? They opened with a pretty convincing victory in Atlanta against the team you rank # 5 (Virginia Tech).

Yeah ...

… but a big component of SOS is your record in division 1, and I don’t count direct opponents – it makes everything trend toward 50%.

Here is how Alabama’s SOS counters look:

Va tech: 3-0
FIU: 0-2
North Texas: 1-2
Arkansas: 0-1

Florida looks like this:

Chas. Southern: 0-2
Troy: 2-1
Tennessee: 2-1
Kentucky: 2-1

So given this, you can see why Florida’s schedule looks tougher so far — they have played 3 “winning” teams by the calculation, and Alabama has played only 1, albeit a strong one.

Understandable...

But weak considering the two teams’ opponents’ SOS. :P

call me an SEC homer....

i can see dropping Cal all the way out of the poll for the beating they took. Ole Miss deserves to drop big, but not sure all the way out.

to balance my SEC homer sentiment - the auburn ranking is still early, but not unrealistic….

all i know for sure is that if any season cries for no polls the first 4or 5 (6?) weeks, it is this year…..

Some idiot

Some idiot was in the comments section last week saying Tru should “write it down” that Cal would be playing for the title, and Best would win the Heisman.

What a maroon!

And. . . LSU is overrated, Cincy is really good.

Heh.

That’s hilarious. :-)

You know, my gut totally agrees with you about LSU. I’m still not able to get my head around Cincinnati being all that good, and until they beat somebody, I guess I’ll struggle with it. Oct 15th at USF ought to clarify the Bearcats’ standing. Too bad they face Miami of Ohio next week – nothing to learn from that game. :-)

LSU looks overrated to me also. But given my ballot as it is, where would you put them? Consider that they have beaten 3 BCS teams, even if none of them are bowl-worthy.

Maybe when they play between the hedges next week, we will have clarity about LSU. They are going to drop like a rock if they lose that game, even though Georgia at home is a tall task for anyone. I think Georgia’s defense is really weak, and LSU’s pretty strong, so if the Dawgs outscore them, I’ll be looking elsewhere.

Oh, I know....

what a maroon, huh? ha ha ha… : )

I actually thought he was sorta brave to go out on a limb like that and make such bold predictions so early in the season as everyone knows that things can change drastically from one week to the next in college football. And even though that gentleman is eating his words right now, I say, good for him. ; )

Well, that idiot

was me. And I felt like even more of an idiot when on Saturday, I was still talking up that pick when someone said to me (I hadn’t seen a TV all day), “Uh. . .you know they just lost to Oregon by about 40, don’t you?” Why, no, no I didn’t, thank you very much.

As for LSU, I think they lose on a neutral field to everyone behind them (except Iowa, who I still claim stinks), until you get down to the aforementioned Oregon. So about 15 or so is where I would put them, but take it with a grain of salt (which I am currently using to flavor my tasty words as I eat them).

Haha!

For the nonce, I’ll leave them where they are. I won’t be the only fool if LSU bites it at UGA this Saturday. :-) I think I’d like them better around 10 or 11, but there you go.

Yes,

I know that idiot was you.

As I was watching a bit of the Cal / Oregon game I actually remembered your post and got quite a chuckle. I’m really rather sorry that you were so hilariously wrong on that, but thanks for the laugh. : )

And you know, it’s about 5:00 pm in New York right now, right? Why don’t you just wash down those horrible tasting words with a lovely Manhattan? That should help….. : )

by BigSkyCat on Sep 28, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I still think Best can challenge for the Heisman

But maybe it should be written down in chalk, not pen.

Mmmm. . . Manhattan. Don’t mind if I do. . .

Mmm.

Good idea, that Manhattan .. :-)

I think you may be right about Best. He is certainly a worthy horse to put your money on.
