The Big Blue Daily Mail -- Kentucky has No Shot Edition

So the headline is, Florida is going to crush UK like a bug.

That's right, folks.  It seems Florida is all mad they didn't put up at least 50 on the Vols, so they are going to take it out on poor, hapless UK.  What I don't get is, after hanging a net 60 points on us last year, what the heck do the Gators have to be mad about?  Shouldn't UK be a little bit miffed they got drilled so mercilessly?

Does anyone, at this point, believe that this year's Florida team is better than last?  If so, the numbers sure don't back it up.  Is this UK team as bad as UK last year?  If so, the numbers don't back it up.  So given all that, how are the Gators supposed to come in and deliver an even bigger beat-down, at Commonwealth, than they did last year at Gainesville?  I don't know, but that seems to be the consensus.

Whatever.  Florida is no doubt a talented team and should be a 20+ point favorite.  Let's see if they can do better than LSU did.  Now, for the news.

Until today...

I thought Dusty Mills was one of the Three Amigos! Either way, he has a smokin’ gf.

Oh…and good luck against Florida today.

Thanks.

We’re going to need it.

Same to Louisville vs. Utah. That would look mighty impressive. Plus, it has the admittedly selfish virtue of making UK’s win against them look better. :-)

Not gonna lie

I only read the Dusty Mills link because of this comment. And I agree.

My other thought after reading this article is “Just how young is this kid?” Honestly, he looks 16.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

turnovers will be key as well....

surely we will not have 2 blocked punts right off the bat ths year-

anyone else have this same thought as the ole miss/usc game unfolded: i see locke and cobb tearing up USC’s defense – why nutt did not go with the wild rebel more i do not know, but have to believe joker was ready to unleash the wildcat on USC when we play. i am not looking ahead, just sayin…

controversial pearl comment not that controversial

okay so i watched the bruce pearl kkk joke over and over trying to find something that would offend me but to be honest, as much as i hate that man, and trust me i do despise him, i really dont think that that was such a bad comment. yea it was a little controversial but it really just was a joke, although i do see where people who are saying that he thinks all people in the south are racist hicks are coming from

by hummer11092 on Sep 25, 2009 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

I actually thought it was funny.

It was inappropriate, but still kinda funny. I really dont get why so many on here hate Pearl. I mean I hate TN, but not Pearl. He has brought relevance to TN and is a good coach. I would rather see them competetive than not.

by UKTimmy on Sep 25, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm with y'all

I just saw it as a joke…an inadvisable, tasteless one, sure, but not that big a deal. I felt the same way about the comment by Billy Packer (who I hate with the heat of a thousand suns) about Allen Iverson being a “tough monkey.” Not that he was trying to be funny by that (can you imagine Billy Packer trying to be funny??) but just that I think it’s pretty obvious he didn’t intend for that to be a racial comment. Trust me, I hate the rural south being stereotyped as racist as much as anyone, but I think it’s a good idea for people to try to lighten up and not be so sensitive when others’ intent is clearly not to offend. There is plenty of real actual injustice out there to get up in arms about, so we really don’t have to go after the piddly stuff, like dumb jokes.

I don’t really get the Pearl-hate either. I think he’s off-the-cuff, funny and entertaining in a tacky huckster kind of way, and he always says really nice stuff about UK’s program. He and Calipari going at each other should be a fun rivalry for us.

by blue kentucky girl on Sep 25, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

This is not the only comment like this he has made.

In fact, he has made similar ones in all seriousness. I get that this was a joke, and your points about lightening up are well made, but it is far more revealing than one might think at first glance.

Pearl really does believe that the South is a stereotypical racist, redneck place. Why is he at Tennessee, then? I suppose he figures Knoxville is urbane enough, the money is good, and he really hasn’t had a better offer.

For more enlightenment, you can read this. And he was talking about Evansville, IN being “red neck.”

KKK And Racism

Indiana isn’t the South. Nor is Illinois.

Both states have areas where KKK was (is?) prominent back in the day.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 26, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

well...

that was his wife (now ex-, I think) who said the part that was actually kind of rude, about it being “red neck,” etc, right? What Pearl himself said, according to that, was: “It was South,” says Pearl. “Shit, it was a little too close to Kentucky.” Sounds to me like a Northerner who prefers his neck of the woods, just like we’re fiercely proud of (and sensitive to criticism about) ours. It sounds exactly like the reverse of what any one of the more big-mouthed politically-incorrect but totally harmess dudes I know might say about the North—mildly off-color, taunting, jokey, not that big a deal.

Pearl is Jewish, right? Making him a very small minority in most all places in the rural South. As far as I know, I didn’t know one Jewish person growing up in my town. Small southern towns have many wonderful qualities, but they can also (and I grew up, currently live in and love such a town, so I can say this) be intolerant, insular and sometimes quite reactionary places. It’s quite possible he actually personally experienced some casual racism (religion-ism? I don’t know) or at the least some not ill-intended but still ignorant comments. He probably IS much more comfortable and culturally at home in settings other than the south that are more culturally diverse, and where his own background is more prevalent and well-understood—but his job requires him to live here, so he deals with it by making inadvisable jokes and off-color comments about it, in that “unabashedly ethnic…uniquely showy Northeastern way,” as JL said back then.

To respond to davw’s comment ""why on earth would you defend the man"—I think we all have coaches and players and announcers whose public images we either like or dislike for whatever reason. For instance, in a sports sense, I can’t stand Coach K, Jim Calhoun, or Dick Vitale. Pearl happens to be one whose public image I kind of like—I think he’s amusing. I like that there are still a few public figures who don’t sound like their every comment has been focus-group-tested and approved. It makes things more interesting. That’s it. Hate him if you must—it isn’t that important to me, honest : )

KKK

Anti-black, anti-Catholic, anti-Jewish.

Most think of KKK as the first but forget about the other two.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 26, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Rednecks are everywhere.

You dont have to live in the south to be a redneck. I find it ironic that he wasnt making a racist statement but making fun of racist and still gets lambasted for it.

crass (krs)
adj. crass·er, crass·est
So crude and unrefined as to be lacking in discrimination and sensibility.
This guy just goes out there and has alot of fun. He is obviously a good coach and recruiter. I think you really can use a guy like this at a football school. He brings attention to the basketball program and puts butts in the seats. If he annoys you then it is because you let him annoy you and are taking him way to seriously.
Well, I am gonna go stare at Dusty Mills gf. LMAO

There

It Florida beats us as bad as they did last year we’ve taken a major step backwards. That was the worst effort I have EVER seen from a Kentucky team. They quit. The coaches quit.
We sat right behind the Kentucky bench, row 1 on the 49 yard line. I remember the hurt look in Cobb’s eyes when they sent in Hartline to start the second half. The kid wanted to play so bad. The defense would come off the field and looked like they had been beat mentally and physically. I felt sorry for Masthay. The first punt block came from the right side. They had slid the back covering the wide out back inside and he was on Tim almost as the ball got there. The second time the same thing. He came off the field and said something to Brooks and Brooks just walked away.
That game was ove in the first quarter.
I don’t think that will happen this year. But if it does then we are going to see a program deflate right before our eyes.

This Florida team is better than last years

Just not right now. UF started slow last year too, remember?

Florida is not going to crush UK like last year. Don’t expect the offense to sputter as much as it did vs. UT, though. Unless the number of Gators with the flu (now at 35) increases.

I never said the guy knows nothing about football.....

I said that he brags in his sleep…..runs his mouth every chance he gets, and has a “thing” for UK like no one’s business…..you can be good and still be a pain in the ass….

by ALLBLUCAT on Sep 26, 2009 6:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Wait am minute, that's not exactly true

Meyer told the Gainesville Sun that he “estimated that in the last three or four weeks more than 35 players have come down with some sort of illness.”

There aren’t 35 players sick right now, and from what I can tell, no Gators are expected to miss the game due to illness. Now, they have a few injuries which might keep out a few players, but very limited to none, because of sickness.

Gave us a chance when LSU came to Lexington ranked #1. We probably won’t beat Florida, but I think we will play better than last year.

I agree Ken. I was there on the first row behind the Kentucky bench. They got beat physically, mentally and it was the worst effort I had ever seen the Cats have,
We’ve got to be better and it is at home.

Close game

Expect the game to be somewhat close. I think Florida wins by 10 or 14.

I don’t care at all about the marquee blowout win. As a Gator fan I’m not thinking about avenging an average win over UT last week — just surviving this game so our team can get well and hopefully recuperate during the bye week.

Nobody at UF is overlooking Kentucky, I assure you. A fight is expected.

Hey, GP!

Wow, long time, no see.

I hope Florida is not too sick. I hate losing to debilitated opponents, and its not near as much fun beating a debilitated opponent, so if UK was to pull the upset, it would be far less satisfying if half the team is throwing up.

Good luck today, although I doubt you will need it. :-)

Keys to success

People are saying Cobb and Locke must get involved, but I don’t see the Florida defense letting them. I think a huge part to winning this game is Matthews and the other receivers. Fla will be focusing on locke, and cobb and blitzing Hartline. I would say scratch the run on the first series and throw downfield the first 3 plays. Our offensive line is good, but the only way we have any kind of shot at running the ball against this NFL defense( thats exactly what it is) is if we make them respect that pass. On defense I say put 7 or 8 in the box and try every blitz in the playbook. Finally, run the wildcat and run it alot, even then though we have to go downfield and avoid the early knockout while playing almost mistake free. Luck and focus and we can keep it reasonable.

by danial on Sep 26, 2009 2:31 AM EDT reply actions

gutsy play calling

I beleive Brooks and company have definetly been saving some plays for this game. Joker cannot afford to play conservative on 3rd down. It almost doesn’t matter how good Ky plays if we don’t run the plays that gives us a chance to keep our defense rested and get their guys tired. With all that said I hope our defense has been practicing tackleing and timing out the running game. I love to beleive we have a chance, but there is so much that has to be done, and so much Florida has to not do for us to have a chance. After that beatdown last year, it’s hard for me to muster up too much optimism.
