First Ever Trip to Lexington - any suggestions?!

Hey UK faithful-  I will be making my first trip to Lexington this weekend for the game and I am very much looking forward to visiting your fine campus and stadium.  Any tips or "must sees" would be greatly appreciated. That includes bars/restaurants to visit Friday night, gameday parking tips and tailgating areas to visit in and around campus.

I promise that our group does not talk trash nor wear jean shorts.  We are just looking forward to a great weekend of football and bourbon amongst the Sea of Blue.

I enjoy reading your site- especially during basketball season, as our fans aren't very knowledgable once football season ends.  (Some of your members like to visit the O&B Hue site and torment us a little once basketball starts - all in good fun though).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Parking tip

Don’t park in someone’s front yard……no matter how cheap it is……you’ll get towed.

Food/Bars

I’m partial to DeSha’s and Sawyers downtown. Joe Bolognas and Two Keys Tavern close to campus. You have all your chain places as well.

The first piece of advice

get your game moved in future years to later in October so that you can take in the horse races at Keeneland before the game. As for this year, pizza at Joe Bolognas or burgers at Lynaugh’s Irish pub. If you are still in town late at night after having had too much to drink (drowning your sorrows from a loss I hope) go to Tolly-Ho for a giant plate of hash browns. Who knows who will be there.

Yeah, if Keeneland was in session that is a must

My roommate once got banned from Tolly-Ho because he walked outside with his drink…..

No Keeneland

Unfortunately Keeneland won’t be going. I highly recommend a drive north up along Paris Pike and the horse farms. Graatz Park and Ashland are worth checking out also. Lexington Cemetary is kind of cool too. Billy’s Barbecue is a good place for western Kentucky style barbecue.

For more upscale dinner options downtown,

I’d go with Jonathan at Gratz Park, Portofino’s, Dudley’s, or A la Lucie. Portofino has a great outdoor eating area if the weather cooperates (doesn’t look good though. . .)

I hear there’s a new “sky bar” in one of the towers downtown, but not sure where. I supposedly has great views of the city.

Thanks for the suggestions

Sounds like Joe Bolognas is worth a try. Also Tolly-Ho is probably in the plans!

It’s closed now, but when I was in school in Gainesville, there was this place called Skeeters and they had a drunken special called the Asher – It was a mound of hash browns covered with eggs and cheese. It rocked. They also had biscuits the size of large grapefruits just in case. When the dance clubs (more like dives) closed at 4am, there would always be a line out the door there.

Can you pay to park in the lots on gameday or are they advanced parking pass admission only?

Thanks for the responses

We had a nice time in Lex and were fairly fortunate with the weather. Friday was sort of a wash because it was pouring for most of the night, but we spent a pretty long time at Cheapside and then some time as Rosebuds where we bumped into Randolph Morris doing shots with everyone in the bar. He’s a tall dude.

We parked at a medical office center right across the street from the Orange lot which worked out pretty well. The UK faithful were a lot of fun and we enjoyed tailgating along side all of them in our lot.

After the game we made it back downtown to some Irish bar that I can’t remember the name of.

One place y’all forgot to mention was Goodfella’s Pizza. We got a slice there both nights – the pizza was outstanding!!
