The Big Blue Daily Mail -- Kentucky Thinking About the Gators

The Florida Gators will be coming to town on Saturday, and it has been a long, long time since last time UK could count the saurians among their victims.  In fact, the last time Kentucky got the best of the reptiles was back in 1986, the year I got out of the U.S. Navy.  Soon to be 23 years.

Of course, Kentucky has several long streaks that need to be disposed of, but it looks pretty unlikely that UK will do it this year.  Still, everyone thought the same thing when LSU came into Commonwealth a couple of years ago, and look at what happened.  So am I saying there's a chance?  Well, yeah, our odds of pulling off this upset are at least 10%.

The Gators proved on Saturday that they are not quite as invincible as everyone thought, as Tennessee demonstrated that it is possible to hold down the offensive juggernaut.  But Tennessee still lost the game, and in the end, that's all that matters.

Now, for the news.

  • CatsPause.com - Whispers: Duke moves in on UF commit Rivers
The strongest whispers coming out of the weekend surround 2011 five-star guard Austin Rivers. After a weekend visit to Duke, Rivers - who is still technically committed to Florida - spoke glowingly about the visit and how much the Duke experience impressed him.

Ouch. Billy D. about to get stiffed by Coach K.

Austin Rivers

The kid committed to UF as a freshman in HS … and this year’s Gator program has the potential to be horrid (with a tougher schedule and thin bench) … Do you think he is going to stay commited if the NIT appearences reach 3 or more???

Doc claims he is fully committed but we’ll see

i live in reno/tahoe area so i bet college football every weekend.

i know the pac-ten, mwc, wac, big 12, confernece usa and big ten very well. it’s the sec that is tricky. i would like a little help from the kentucky side of things. kentucky/florida this weekend. the point spread is 22 points and i believe the point spread will go up. you got them in your backyard and you had a great win over your in state rival. just tell me strentgh and weaknessess of your team. i think 22 points is too much considering tennessee kept them within 10 points in the swamp. florida does not have the receivers they have had in the past. any injuries and what are hartlines statistics and is he a good leader? is your coach got a good game plan? any information would be appreciated. peace out ramble on!

Truth is that so far we have been two different teams

if the right team of Cats show up, they will knock that spread in the dirt…..if they dont, it will be a long day…..Cats will be well prepared and have the talent to keep this one close…..we will not play “not to lose”, but we have about a 1-6 shot of winning this game…..

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

UK/UF

Historically, the Lexington games are a lot closer so I would say if the line rises, bet Blue. Kentucky has a better offense than Tennessee and defense is not quite as good

Headed to the game on Saturday

I’m hoping that Saint Tebow’s grace will pervade the stadium and I will leave Lexington a better man.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Tebow

Lexington will be a better city overall, just by his having been here.

Wonder if he was at Kentucky?

If he was at Kentucky as a player we’d aready named him ‘coach in waiting’ for any time he wants it. Face it, he’s very good and is an outstanding athlete. As soon as someone from Kentucky wins the Hiesman and leads us to the national championship, other schools will same the same about him.
When did showing your faith become a bad thing?

by ParisGuy on Sep 23, 2009 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

Its not a bad thing

The absolute man-crush and absurd amount of fawning over a guy just barely into adulthood from the media is over the top.

Honestly, there was one point during the national championship game last year where Thom Brenneman said “If you are ever fortunate enough to spend 5 minutes or 20 minutes with Tim Tebow, your life will be better for it.” Its excessive.

I’ve got nothing against Tebow. I actually kind of like him. I think he’s overrated as a Quarterback, but I think he’s the best throwing Fullback I’ve ever seen.

Man-crush?

Sorta like the why the Cat fans have a man-crush on Calipari?
I don’t see anything that Tebow has done to embarrass the school, his family or the football team. Other than putting them in the national spotlight and winning two championships in three years, a dream for other schools.
Anyone be embarrassed to have him as a son?

I won't disagree that some fans have an unsightly love for Cal as well

But as of yet, it hasn’t reached critical mass with the national media yet. (Nor do I think it ever will.)

I will be joining in, most likely—- but I will remember talk of hyperbole and “too much Tebow”….

What is Tebow’s record at UF ?

Probably a safe hunch....

.
as far as national media goes. But he really could turn out to be “as good as advertised”, meaning the letters “W”, “A” and “L” are going to be worn out on a lot of keyboards in the Bluegrass next year.

It will be interesting to see what kind of level it reaches. And I could totally see some of the local media (especially local t.v.) getting swept away with it…. especially as the kid seems to have a pretty good personality so far.

We’ll see….

are you talking to me, kygirl? : )

It’s so confusing who is responding to what here…I was referring (unclearly, as it turns out) to the posts above chastising UK fans for making fun of the all-Tebow-all-the-time talk by reminding us that we ourselves will never shut up about Wall come basketball season. I was just trying to say, well OF COURSE we’ll make fun of the Tebow deification but participate happily in Wall man-love…because Wall belongs to us, whereas as Tebow plays for Florida. I think it’s funny when fans seems to expect neutrality or fairness in one another—we’re FANS, of course we’re biased, and I for one am proudly so : )

That’s it! Sorry for the vagueness.

Alabama, South Carolina etc.

How many think the Tide is going to be looking past Arkansas because they’re worried about the Cats? This could be one heck of a football game. The one on Thursday night is going to be interesting too. Mississippi at South Carolina. Some one asked Spurrier if Ole Miss is as good as the No, 4 or 5 ranking they have. He said if they’re number four and we are a 3 or 4 underdog then someone thinks the Gamecocks are pretty good too. He said if they had won the Georgia game thinks might be a little different. Good point. Seems to be a fine line between No. 4 and not ranked as in Carolina’s case.

Nick Saban doesnt look past teams

its not in his genetic make up……his DNA is implanted with methodical tediousness……If his players look past anyone, they wont be around for long, they will be riding pine…..the man doesnt make those kinds of mistakes….he has made others, but not those kinds.

And if Spurrier isnt mouthing off about something, he is asleep…..or more likely in a coma…..I hear he brags in his sleep….

A Saban Story

ABC. what happened to Bama in last year’s bowl game then?
The got embarassed by a team who the Cats should have been playing.
We heard an interesting story at the golf course about Saban last year when we were in T’loosa.
This older fellow came up to us in the pro shop since we were wearing Kentucky stuff. He wished us good luck and I asked what kind of guy Saban was. It turns out this gentleman is a former SEC official and still calls scrimmages for the Tide.
He said recently he was calling a scrimmage and they ran a sweep his way and he got run over. Instantly the equipment people came running over. He had his glasses broken, I gash in his nose and a cut above one eye. They were treating him before they were going to send him to the emergency room.
Saban came over and looked down at him. The older guy thought he was going to inquire about him.

INSTEAD
He looked down at this guy who must be at least 70 and said
“When in the hell are you going to start calling ‘holding’?”
We all laughed at the story and everyone noticed the scars on the man’s head.
Seems Saban is all in, even the practices.

game plan

i think our focus should be to play SMASHMOUTH football. we have got to shut these gators up and get them while their vulnerable! we have to go into the game and not think we are the wildkats from the past, of the future. play with a chip on out shoulders! think that its not just kentucky playing FLORIDA, but its “KENTUCKY” playing florida. we’ve got something to prove. and we are at home! and last i checked we’ve beaten the numero uno team here before!
