A bigger, badder James Lee- type of "enforcer" is here to play hoops!
For some time now, I have felt UK basketball has lacked the big strong athlete with an "on-court attitude". While we have had excellent players, they have either had to play up a position from what they would play in the NBA or they had more introverted personalities. While these smaller, but skilled players lead quietly by example, they never intimidated the opponent or established the type of swagger for which UK has been known. This level of intimidation can easily translate into 5-10 points during the course of each game.
There is a prototype for the type of player I think filled this position. James Lee comes to mind, with his marvelous build and leaping ability, he repeatedly finished off fast breaks with a thunderous dunk! Though only 6'5" you simply could not muscle him out of position for a rebound. His defense was "in your face", rugged, very physical Kentucky basketball. "Not HERE"! was his motto. If you played against Lee, contact was inevitable.
So now we have a well-documented tough guy coming to campus. IMO DeMarcus Cousins will be the "enforcer" for this team. John Wall will wow us with his speed and skill, but he will not muscle people around. Patrick Patterson has a wonderful "blue collar" work ethic, and will be a "beast" along side of Cousins, but he has more of a "businesslike" approach to his game. Cousins, on the other hand, is the "James Lee reincarnation" I have been awaiting to see don the proud blue and white.
Cousins says it best himself, “On the court, I’m a badass. I’m mean. I’m there to cut your throat. I’m not there to be nice. Off the court, I’m cool. I’m chill. I play around with you. I’m nothing like people say I am. Anyone that’s taken the time to get to know me will tell you that. But on the court … like I said, I’m there to cut your throat.”
That is pretty straight forward. Cousins is not just a big, physical presence, but also a terrific athlete with a better basketball skills than most PF and Centers he will play this year. Add those two characteristics to the natural tendancy to be an extravert and not be bullied and you have a dynamic combination for a front court player.
<!-- {PHOTO} -->
Cousins dunks during the McDonald’s All-American Game.
(AP Photo/McDonald’s,Henry Ray Abframs)
“He’s not really angry or mad all the time,” Patterson said, “but he plays with that anger and fire and frustration. He leaves it on the court. He’s not a bad person, but he’s not going to let up. He’s not going to let you see the light of day. Even when he’s beating you down, he’s still not going to stop. He’s got such good footwork for a freshman and he’s not afraid to dribble the ball. He’ll grab it off the rim and take off down the court without hesitation. He’s just so naturally strong. Even when he was young and skinny, I bet he was strong!”
So if you beat our fast guards off the dribble on offense, you will meet Cousins in the middle. He is no "gentle giant" guarding the goal. You will meet your your worst nightmare.
"Resistance is futile!" Contact is inevitable!

Very nice Blue
Now help me here a bit. When did James Lee play for UK? I remember Magloire who was an "enforcer’ but not Lee?

Heh.
We played against James Lee in high school. He was six inches taller and 40# heavier than our largest player at the time. He took a lot more shots at Henry Clay than he did at UK, but that’s always the way it is.
From about the free throw line in, he had a good touch, too. But power was his stock in trade.

Excellent post BBO
UK hasn’t had the enforcer-type player on their roster much over the last 30+ years. Jamal Magliore and Winston Bennett both come to mind, but that’s about it.
Enforcer at times connotes a non-athletic, bully-type, but Cousins is a very talented bb player, who just happens to be a very physical performer. A good combination if you ask me … or Joe B.

Chuck Hayes?
I’d consider him an “enforcer” around the basket.
by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 2, 2009 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I suppose enforcer can mean different things to different people
But when I think of enforcer, I think of a physical, aggressive low post presence who dares an opponent to enter the lane, and who clearly is an intimidating defensive force as well as aggresive offensively.
I love Hayes, but intimidating? Well, maybe. Maybe I consider him a fringe enforcer.

7th in rebounds, 8th in steals, 10th in blocks (UK all-time).
Pretty impressive for 6-5 guy.

James Lee = Freight Train
Jumped OVER a Soviet big man to dunk in preseason exhibition game in late 1974. UK won 109-75 over the Soviets (considered best amateur team in world then).
Lee played in 1975-76-77-78 at UK.
I’d take him over Cousins any day.

James Lee Would Have Started For Almost Any Team BUT UK In 1977 And 1978
He was supremely talented but his the “bad luck” of being at UK with Givens, Robey, and Phillips.

I haven't seen Cousins play in college.
I saw Lee play in college, and in high school. He was very good, very strong. But DeMarcus Cousins is bigger by a good amount. Stronger? Dunno, we’ll find out.
Cousins is certainly more skilled from the high school game film I have seen. He has greater range and a much better handle than Lee did, at least in high school.

As I recall announcers began using the term "sixth man" around that time.
In the 78 season it really was like having six starters. That team was so business-like, too. They acted like they’d been there before… Ah the days when seniors ruled the court :-)

I am so excited about the upcoming games, i can hardly wait. This is going to be so much fun. Football starts Saturday and then comes October and we know what comes in October. No,….I am not talking about Halloween….LOL… A little madness thing in the Bluegrass.
Just think. If we do as well as expected, the conversations won’t contain questions like, “Did you see the game last night?”, there will be questions like, “Did you see those monster jams last night?”.

They’re just excited.
Is it going a bit overboard to already be labeling players and making comparisons of a player who has yet to take the floor with actual players of years gone by? Well, yes, it probably is, but it’s also completely harmless and just shows peoples excitement and what we (UK fans) see as our potential as a team and the potential of our players for this coming season.

Go at it. Never suggested it was harmful.
However a little healthy perspective is usually good every now and then.
All this talk about UK winning 30 games and making the Final Four is not too smart…but it certainly won’t be the first time I’ve seen this amount of whacky expectation with such a young unproven team. Seems to me that it kind of sucks the fun out, even if they do well and rise to that level.
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
by HozeKing on Sep 3, 2009 12:08 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions 0 recs
Heh.
Well, it isn’t “whacky,” now is it? Two words — Fab Five.
I agree that there is a fair chance that UK will not be as good as advertised, at least not good enough to get to the Final Four.
But don’t act like this has never happened, i.e. that an infusion of young talent failed to get a team to the Final Four. The last time we saw a recruiting class of this quality in college basketball, that team did get to the Final Four. That is simply a fact.
So your claim that this is “whacky” just doesn’t hold up. The most recent precedent, in fact, suggests it is certainly justifiable historically.
So what was your “perspective,” exactly? That we should expect 25 wins and a second-round flameout, roughly equivalent to the performance of the last four years? If we shouldn’t expect more than that, perhaps Calipari will become the new Gillispie.
This year’s schedule contains about 34 guaranteed games counting the first round of the SEC tournament only, and very likely at least 40 games. A 28-12 year would be a disappointment to any Kentucky fan, and would be an insignificant improvement over Tubby Smith’s last two years. Less than 30 wins would be a major disappointment to many fans, and I might be one of them.
The expectations to win 30 games, given the schedule, talent, and quality of the competition, simply aren’t all that high. In fact, I think they may be a bit low, but this is Coach Cal’s first year.

Healthy perspective or just a Debbie-Downer?
I actually totally appreciate a healthy perspective (believe me, I do), but this is sports and so I also like to mix in a little optimism with my realism (I think it’s entirely possible to be optimistic and realistic at the same time, thank-you-very-much) and then throw in a WHOLE lot of fun and excitement.
Now, I personally don’t really expect a Final Four and an undefeated season (and I’m not entirely sure how we got to Final Four and how many wins we’ll have this year as I thought we were discussing Cousins’ potential, but whatever) as all that is unrealistic to my mind seeing as how this group has yet to take the floor. In my heart do I want us to accomplish those things, well sure I do, but at this stage I don’t truly expect them. However, I also don’t think there is anything wrong with other people having their high expectations. Will they be sorely disappointed if this group of ‘Cats doesn’t achieve the high marks they are counting on? Maybe they will and I guess that’s their problem, but there is certainly nothing wrong with aiming for the stars.
So again, people are just excited at this point and they have good reason to be. We have a team that rankings-wise at least, the record books may never see the likes of again and people are over the moon with anticipation and excitement and I happen to think that excitement is also pretty darn healthy. Surely you know excitement? It’s what can happen to a person when they don’t allow their mind to drown in skepticism and wander into the depths of what-could-possibly-go-wrong on a daily basis. : )
And don’t worry, all the high and totally out-there expectations for the team and the season that people are throwing around right now will most likely dissipate some once the season starts, but until then, I guess you’ll just have to go on reading about it from us silly and "not too smart" UK fans. But, on the other hand, I suppose such talk might even elevate once the season tips-off as we may completely tear it up, you never know. And good luck to you, sir, in dealing with that. : )

ding ding ding!
Debbie Downer is the right answer, bigsky. It’s supposed to be fun, Hoze! We’re fans! We’re excited! It’s FUN to talk about a team’s potential, to dream about a Final Four run coming of an NIT visit, to imagine that an incoming freshman might become a dominant beast in the mold of a beloved former player. It doesn’t make us idiots, and it is hardly the exclusive domain of UK basketball fans. This is the very nature of what being a fan is about. We’re not solving the health care crisis here. Sports. Is. Supposed. To. Be. Fun!!
I guess we all have a nice object lesson here to the dreary, dreary joylessness that being a Louisville fan so clearly brings ; )

Kenny Walker wasn't bad either
I wouldn’t have wanted to go in the paint against Kenny Walker. He was more along the lines of Jarvis Vanardo at MSU. He wasn’t going to bang around too much, but he would go after anyone who didn’t take it strong to the basket.

Doesn't it make you feel happy again?
It will be really nice this year to watch games and not wonder from tipoff on whether we will be humiliated and befuddled by our team and the decisions of their coach. We don’t have to win every game (although it would be good) but heaven forbid we have to ever deal with the kinds of losses we have seen in recent years.
by StillCatwoman on Sep 3, 2009 11:23 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I AM STOKED!! If Orton comes off the bench and shows little decline in talent from Cousins, that would be awesome.
I don’t know who will start, but Patterson and Wall should be shoe-ins. After that IMO Cousins starts. The following question is are we better starting two point guards and and the best wing or starting our best PG and two of our wing players.
Either way, the lineup goes, I believe we aren’t blessed just with great talent and great athletes, we also have one young man who has the type of personality that could be described as an “enforcer”. That kind of person can positively influence the overall attitude of an entire basketball team. Let “The Beast” (Cousins) loose!
