Brief Tidbit (Reading Athlon & Lindy's Basketball Preview Magazines)
I am reading these 2 basketball pre-season magazines on my commuter train rides this week.
Saw a tidbit about Billy Donovan that really surprised. He is in his 13th year at Florida this sesaon. Senior Dan Werner is only the 13th player who became a 4th year senior for Billy D and the Gators.
Some went (early) to pro basketball but many transferred. The magzines predict another NIT season for Florida. Billy D has really struggled since 2007.

Wonder what has lead to the downfall of Billy D??
i would have thought he would have been able to keep the cupboard loaded after the 2 title runs…..

Hard To Maintain 2006 And 2007 Level Of Achievement
And I think his Florida, no wait Kentucky, no wait Orlando magic, no wait Florida (decisions) have been a distraction to him.
PLUS he lost John Pelphrey as #1 recruiter at Florida.

I think we all would have been happy to have "Wrong Way" Donovan as our coach
It seemed like at the time his whole family was there in Florida with him and involved in the community, kids in school etc. – which made a move to Lexington sort of out of the question. And the Magic thing a little odd.
I know he has created his own distractions and he has had defections but, he has also recruited alot of NBA caliber players. I think the fact that he has had so few 4th year seniors should go a little to his credit. We may make a similar statement about Cal in a few years …

I Think If You Check The Record
He doesn’t have nearly as many NBA players as you might think.

I never saw the need for Donovan at UK
We should have pursued Dan Issel or Pat Riley instead. Pro coaches have been quite successful at UK (See Rick Pitino)

Issel was a BIG maybe....and Riley isnt coming back.....its a nice sentimental thought
and I would love to have seen either of them at the helm, but I just dont think it ever could have happened

Dan Issel
Thank goodness, no.
No college experience as a coach. Moderate NBA coaching success.
Riley had much more NBA success but ZERO college experience. Another big IF and probably not a good choice.

Riley?
Recruits would have lined up to play for him. As for Issel, I’m sure he knows the college game. His problem was that he pointed out the ethnicity of the guy who threw his beer on him at a game. Therefore, he did not get a long term to prove himself.Otherwise, he took a dismal Denver team and way overachieved with them.

Recruits Knew Riley, Sure
But Riley had no experience with the college recruiting process.
Issel knows basketball but again, not college recruiting.
