The Big Blue Daily Mail -- Friday Quickies

As we sit here on the brink of football season's early practices, news around the Big Blue Nation is kind of scarce.  So treat this as an open thread to discuss any Wildcat-related thing you want.

Fascinating...

I had a pithy comment all worked up and ready about what kind of a kid would want to sign with Isaih Thomas… then I found out it was the same kind of kid who signed with Billy Gillispie!!!!

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Heh.

Name didn’t ring a bell, huh? :-)

The name did...

My pithy comment was coming from your headline about “Isiah lands No. 16-ranked player in the country.” Then I actually read the article.

And here I thought that Ferguson would be the one recruit Calipari would try to pick back up.

Ferguson

Anybody want to see Ferguson play? He’ll be playing at WKU once a year.

by Ken Howlett on Aug 7, 2009 6:14 PM EDT reply actions

Obviously a talented player with a lot of maturing to do

Always two ways to look at things … he’ll either be a “big fish in a small pond” (and improve his game) or he’ll learn to play at the level of somewhat lesser competion and maybe his game doesn’t reach it’s true potential. I think if you’re a top 25 caliber player you need to challenge yourself game in/game out.
Look on the bright side – at least he didn’t pick another SEC school.

Going to another SEC school

That’s what I thought. He also considered IU, so I’m happy he’s not on UK’s schedule.

You make a good point about the comp. level, but a player is a player (at that level) regardless of where he plays. There are tons of examples of players from mid-major and low-major conferences who went on to have great NBA careers: Scotty Pippen, Karl Malone, John Stockton and Courtney Lee come to mind. Besides, the Sun Belt is a pretty decent conference. I’ve seen several SB teams over the last 5-6 years playing WKU, and with a few exceptions, most of the teams are at least competent.

There's another

It’s true in the NFL also. There are an enormous number of guys who come from small colleges, in some cases, Div. II schools. TO went to Chattanooga for chrissakes! I’m a big believer that the cream will rise to the top, regardless of where it starts out.

I was thinking earlier today ...

… that arguably the three best WR’s of the last 15 years or so all played at small schools — TO, Rice, and Randy Moss went to Marshall.

AND ...

Walter Payton (he was pretty good) went to Jackson State.

AND

in baseball too – Albert Pujols attended Maple Woods Community College in Kansas City, MO.

Calipari Stunned, Surprised, Shocked, Overwhelmed
The Big Blue Nation is nuts!

Nuts? Probably so but in a good way.

Just wait till he and the players experience Madness and then his first game at Rupp. He already knows the Rupp atmosphere from being being there before, but Madness will blow his mind!

I think Madness will blow his mind...

Maybe someone has thought of this and let him see tape footage of the Madness. You know, prepare him for the shock ! It would be nice to see his face if he hasn’t seen any of our previous Madness events.

Truz, why would you point out the Rose story? Isn’t it just old news?

by ParisGuy on Aug 7, 2009 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

No.

It’s new news. This is the first time Rose has taken questions from the press on the subject of his alleged impropriety, and it’s news.

What I’m wondering is, why would you ask that question, especially since the answer is obvious?

It was my understanding this had all been hashed out previously. But I certainly understand you are totally correct if it wasn’t.
When is the NCAA suppose to file its ruling on the Memphis situation? Its about time for their ruling.
Of course we could expect what they might say but I think I’d rather read and take it as fact. .

by ParisGuy on Aug 7, 2009 11:18 PM EDT reply actions

When will the NCAA rule?

Well I would think that they should rule on the Corey Maggette/Myron Piggie/Duke violations first.

So if they can leave that investigation dangling for the better part of 9 years… I would think something like this would at least take a decade or more to decide on!

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Thanks for the link chirop

that is very interesting. I noticed it was dated 2004. He signed a NOI with Duke in 1997. If it is still pending, we may never know.

Yeap

Its still pending. No decision ever made despite the obvious open/shut.
