Open Thread: The Kentucky Men's Basketball Schedule Prime-Time Show

For whatever it's worth, here is the open thread to talk about UK's brand-new schedule, the release of which has been completely eclipsed by the NCAA and Memphis.

This should be lots of fun.  Let's enjoy ourselves and begin dreaming of October.

Talk about it.  The show, I mean.  Or the schedule.  Or whatever, as long as it's Wildcat-related.

Apparently...

Bummer.

I noticed many TBA's

in the TV broadcasts. Can I assume this will be the UK Network?

At the opening of the broadcast

They said that due to ESPN picking up the SEC rights, many of the games do not have start times yet. They said it will be sorted out in the next couple of weeks.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

UNC, UConn and Indiana

back to back to back on CBS twice and ESPN in all 3 games. This will be a big chance to see where the team stands at that point in the season.

Another stretch that could be hairy is....

from Feb. 13 to Feb. 27 they have:

Tennessee – H
@ Miss Sit
@ Vandy
USC – H
@ Tennessee

UK will definitely be favored in all those games but I could see a slip up as possibility somewhere in there. UK then plays @ UGA before finishing the season in Rupp against Florida.

What's the reason for the negativity?

Why the negative comments? We aren’t going to slip up. A guy we spent almost four million on shouldn’t slip up. With all the big time recruits and the top five ranking, how in the world could we fail. You guys act like its another season of Billy Gillispie. Where is all the love we’ve been showing for this guy? Does any one really give Indiana a chance against the Cats after having their team dismantled last year? It you think their coach is going to turn it around that quickly then maybe we should have checked out his track record and see if he’d fit at UK. I think we offered when we got Billy but were turned down. Someone out there will know the story.
Perk up! We haven’t been found to be in violation of any thing and I’m sure if Barnhart and Todd thought there would be any dishonor brought to the program they wouldn’t have signed Cal.
This are my opinions, not meant to be surly, but if you find they are, live with it.

by ParisGuy on Aug 20, 2009 11:47 PM EDT reply actions

negative or realistic

I dont think predicting losses is being negative. I think it is being realistic. This is going to be a very young team. There is more upside than down, but realistically, there will be some losses in Dec. and beyond. As far as Crean goes, I love the guy. He was my pick 2 years ago and I never heard of him being offered the UK job then. Maybe Truz knows. I find it hard to believe he would turn down UK and then one year later take the IU job with serious probation problems.

by UKTimmy on Aug 21, 2009 3:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Crean

There are plenty of sources out there that have said publicly if Crean had been offered the job when Tubby left, he would have taken it in a heartbeat.

As to the negativity… I don’t think anyone (except coach Cal) expects us to go 40-0 and win every game by 25. Loved his comments at the end of the show about that! LOL

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Blue chip or not, looking realistically at a team being tired, having an off night or whatever . . . losses happens.

I believe we will be favored in all of the games in this schedule, but there will be achance for an “upset” or two along the way. This is especially true if this team’s style has to be modified from the DDMO. Long Beach state is full of seniors who have played together and we have certainly learned in the past better athletes, don’t beat better teams. I think Miss. State has an awfully good looking team and playing at Starksville is always tough. Playing at Vandy is another problem because of the court. Wouldn’t be wonderful to win out the out-conference schedule?

by Blueobsessed on Aug 21, 2009 7:23 AM EDT reply actions

Schedule strength

Yesterday before watching the show, I commented on the strength of the schedule. Specifically, I said:

The only place I think it could get much tougher is if we had a harder first game in the Cancun Classic.

As they went over the show last night and the RPI from last year for all the teams, I found out that Cleveland State was 50ish in the RPI and both Virginia and Stanford were sub-100. ROFL. Shows how much I know. I also think it says something about the prejudices many of us have around here. We comment over and over that we’d like to see a schedule that has bigger names… but often, those bigger names are actually worse teams.

Overall, I’m fairly pleased with the schedule. I always like starting the season with a lower tier in-state school, so Morehead State and their up-pace tempo will be a perfect opener. Our usual run of UNC, UofL, and IU will be challenging as per the norm. Beginning play in the Big East-SEC challenge with UConn will give us a lot of notoriety (you know ESPN will hype this all to hell coming from Madison Square Garden). Coach Cal said the other schools sprinkled through the non-conference schedule will show us a lot of different looks defensively, which I think will be an important teaching tool. If you’re wanting to learn to beat a zone, its a lot better to figure it out against Sam Houston State in December than to try and do it against Syracuse during the third week of March!

The SEC will be much more challenging this year. Trent Johnson will continue to improve LSU, both the Mississippi schools are getting a lot of pre-season love, Auburn and Arkansas will be rebuilding but always present a stiff challenge. When it comes to the SEC East, it all starts and ends with South Carolina for me. Florida is a wreck somehow. Pearl’s Tennessee team should be about on par with last year. Vandy will play over their heads as usual and Georgia will be Georgia. What I want to see is how Horn gets Downy and crew to respond to last year. They gave us a couple of back breaking drubbings and more than any other SEC teams this season, I want to beat them like a drum.

Overall, I like the schedule. There was only one team on there with a sub-200 RPI rating. In the coming years, I’m sure we’ll see some of those lower 100’s replaced with teams that fit in the 90-120 range (which includes many of the bottom BCS schools and the tougher mid-majors).

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Aug 21, 2009 7:43 AM EDT reply actions

I expect ...

… Tennessee to be much tougher. Much. I don’t worry near as much about USC. Florida will be better this year, and overlooking them is a mistake. Donovan, I think, did a little addition by subtraction when he lost Calathes.

Why?

I dont see UT being much better than last year at all. They lost a heck of a lot the year before and didnt add much in the off season. Plus Bruce Pearl is still their coach.

Nah

Better personnel? Who did they add that’s going to make them so much better?

They will be better simply from another year of development but I dont think they are going to be a lot better or tougher. They still have a honda for a point guard.

Scandal v. Schedule

A scandal gets more interest than a schedule – especially when the damn thing was SOOOO drawn out.

Is UNC or UConn the team UK should worry about the most?

While chances of us beating one of these teams is, even to the pessimistic, relatively good, the likelihood that UK will be able to beat both teams is obviously tough to imagine with any real confidence.

So my question is this: Which team is more cause for concern?

Is it UNC, with its new, but well experienced, starting line-up?
The return of Marcus Ginyard from injury, promising freshman from last year Deon Thompson, and high percentage shooter Ed Davis, make them the team to beat in the ACC yet again.

Or is it UConn who is most likely to spoil UK’s early attempts for a No. 1 ranking?
While inside threat Hasheem Thabeet has left for the NBA; the Huskies are no less a threat from the outside than they were last year. Also, after coming off what is sure to be a very tough game against UNC, the highly-praised UK freshman may yet to built up the stamina to attempt another huge game so quickly.

So, which game do you think is the most dangerous?

by BlowOutYourBlood on Aug 24, 2009 4:41 PM EDT reply actions

Tough call

Ordinarily, I’d go with UNC… but we get them in Rupp this year and the UConn game is in Madison Square Garden.

So I say UConn is the bigger threat.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
