Kentucky Football: 2009-2010 Season Guide for the Behaviorally Challenged
UK FOOTBALL EDITION
We are now in full swing for UK athletics for the 2009-2010 school year. And by that I do mean "swing". What?....you say.....The season hasnt even started....well, no it really hasn't, but etiquette classes for this year have started and this is your guide to behavior in such a target-rich environment as we seem to have found ourselves.
Everyone has had to "Embrace the Hate" since the John Calipari ( well maybe some of you have to still call him John Calipari, I now simply refer to him as JC, no not That One) hiring in the spring. However, the football team has completed three bowl seasons, and brought newfound fame for it's history, so we start the season full of promise, and the eventual exaggerated exuberance that it will bring.
What we have here is a guide (examples of acceptable and non-acceptable behavior for sidelines, tailgating, highways and backroads, and beyond). This is a GUIDE and you may find that not all situations are covered here, but let's face it. No one could cover everything that happens to an enthusiastic UK fan over the course of a season, should they decide to put a sincere effort into it.
1) Tailgating( At Commonwealth)- It is acceptable and even encouraged to paint up, dress up, tank up and fire up at Commonwealth. It is not acceptable however, to do this to the oppositions fans wherever they find to park. Please refrain from painting over collegiate license plates from the oppostion with a prominent blue UK. Do not offer food to passersby from opposing teams which has been laced with enough heat to melt the polar ice caps. (If you are willing to share your adult beverages with them however, this practice is permitted). It is not permissable to have a fan pointed at the opposing fan's tailgate party and open a can of stink bait, or pop blue smoke canisters in their direction, unless of course they did it first, then it's game on!
2) Commonwealth Stadium- It is acceptable to take your game paraphernalia into Commonwealth to cheer on the Cats. You should however refrain from taking slingshots and blue paintballs, joy buzzers for shaking the opponents fan's hands before and after the game, and banners which read " The Only Ticket I could Get Was Sitting Beside These Morons" that you attempt to stretch across your seat and the three opponents beside you.
3) When the Cats win, it is not permissable to show body parts to the opponent's fans. If we should happen by some random act to lose however, feel free to show your displeasure.
4) Should you wish to engage an opponent's fans with verbal jabs and enthusiastic conversation, please keep personal attacks to a minimum. They cannot help neither their ignorance nor their perpetuation of the myth that they are better than we are. Unless it is some loudmouthed ignorant jerk that has no idea of etiquette or even how to spell it. Then let the bum have it with both barrels.
5) Traveling for away games. This should be done ONLY in numbers and never into an area where you do not have some sort of backup. Should you find yourself sitting on highway 75 headed south to Knoxville or Athens, or on 65 headed south to Nashville, or any other opposition's stadium, and get passed by a vanload of opposing fans who decide to show you their intelligence ( both cheeks) refrain from taking target practice. This is considered to be "baiting" ( see Tru for definition). Do not allow yourself to be dragged into a contest of stupidity. That is for the lesser schools to deal with.
6) Opponents stadiums. Go in, sit down, shut up, and watch the game. Nuff' said.
7) Celebrations at opponent's stadiums. This practice should be avoided at all costs, as it usually is followed by arrests, ER visits, and stalking from enraged fans from the opposition. Not Good.....don't go there.
8) Emergency breaks along out-of-state backroads and in small towns. Please try and find appropriate facilities for emergency bathroom stops before and after a game. Getting caught in Georgia, Mississippi,Alabama,Tennessee,S.Carolina or Louisiana with "it" hanging out in the breeze for all to see is not recommended and in some rural areas does carry a prison sentence. Florida however is a different story.....soak those bozos down every chance you get!
Hopefully this guide will help make your UK Football experience just a little more enjoyable this season and beyond. Remember, it is up to us to be the more mature and thoughtful fans out there, we are from Kentucky people, let's act like it!
The Basketball Edition will follow in about a month......however since we rule basketball, most of these situations will be obsolete, so that guide will probably be much shorter.

I'd add one more
9) Anything Cleverly Humorous supersedes all previous rules. (Note: this applies to opposing fans too – maintain a healthy sense of humor at all times)
There is no gravity - the earth just sucks.
I will try to remember that one for the basketball edition.....
away games would make me a bit nervous on that one though……lol.
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
Well, you do have to pick your spots
So I guess that rule actually supersedes #9…
Actually, that was a rule back when I played Ultimate in grad school. If a borderline catch was made (might have been out of bounds, frisbee might have hit the ground first, etc) but the catch itself was deemed sufficiently funny and/or awesome then the player was awarded the frisbee.
There is no gravity - the earth just sucks.
Good grief
I havent played that since I was in college either…..ugh!….I am getting old!
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
Blu, are you thirty yet
You’re getting old when you can hear yourself walk. I just got there.
funny post yet so true.
"SPORTS"--Not interested----"CATS"--Pull up a chair,I've got all night.
hit 44 this year
bad football knees and shin splints probably make me feel older than I am…..lol
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
Your guide is pretty darn good!
Though I have no experience with going on the road, I am assuming you have bunches of memories on how to conduct oneself and stay safe.
That said, I got a giggle about some of these guidelines. Then again I am sure you know. Great stuff.
A lot of that was from personal experience, however
it has been a few years since I roadtripped to a college football game. I did put a couple of things in there I only “heard” about though…..;-)
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
29 Road Trips and Counting
AllBlue, a group of us have been traveling to a SEC game together for 29 years. This year, our 30th trip will be to Auburn.
The first was in 1980 to Birmingham to see Curci’s Cats take on Bear Bryant’s Alabama team. BEFORE the game they were selling posters celebrating his victory, No. 300 for the man. The poster’s were right, we lost by 40 or something.
Over the years we have found the opponents fans cordial and welcoming. Usually once they see we are wearing shoes and have most of our teeth, they invite us to tailgate with them. We learned to play ‘washers’ at Baton Rouge, eat gumbo there too, ate ribs at Dreamland, more than a couple of visits to Acme Oyster Bar in New Orleans, attended the state fair in Jackson when we played Ole Miss there. Some wonderful memories.
The only place, and there was 12 of us in the group at time, we’ve felt uncomfortable was in Knoxville. Go figure.
Usually the fans are great, will ask about our coming basketball team. ask if we think we’ll beat Vandy.
In twenty nine years we’ve seen a few victories. Very few. Two at Vanderbilt and two at South Carolina. But hey, its not the winning or losing thing, its about seeing how fans at other schools really get into tailgating. eating the regional foods and seeing the South.
We always try to play golf and we’ve seen some very beautiful courses. The Robert Trent Jones courses and nothing beat the Stone Mountain course in October with the trees changing.
A couple of our travelers have past away but we have some new ones joining us. The motor home is always full and the trip is way more than the game. Friends getting together for a long weekend to relive the memories is something that is priceless. We have guys traveling from South Carolina,, the Atlanta area and Central Florida to meet up.
Twenty nine great years and a bunch guys ‘doing their thing’.
Now THAT is a tradition!
Acme is awesome for the oysters….and they have Shrimp that are bigger than hamburgers!!
Ever been to a Whattaburger in Bama or La or Georgia?? The Jones courses are among some of the most beautiful in the US. Played from Mobile to Huntsville over a 10 day period a few years back…..a trip of a lifetime if you love to swing a club.
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
I LOVE Whattaburger!!
Man I haven’t had one of those since I moved from Texas back to Ohio.
Best fast food burger out there!

Make sure your car is in could shape
My senior year in high school we upset Owensboro High. It was a great night until my 15 year old Buick overheated in front of their school. If your car stinks, bring a change of clothing. I survived. Turns out some of their fans were pretty cool people. I survived and the damn Buick lived to see me through College. Barely…
No matter where you're at, there you are
Pretty cool about your old Buick
Cars were made better back then just like everything else. I still have my husband’s 1977 Cadillac Seville and it runs like a dream. Just can’t beat a Caddy ride.
drove a Buick Electra 225 for about
a year when I was in college….had the dial-up speed warning indicator….used to split time in it when the old man worked 1st shift….he would always set it at 55….I always had it set at 75 so it wouldnt buzz when i drove…..classic….rusted to beat all, but ran like a scalded dog….got it up into the triple digits on I-75 S headed out of Dayton to Cincy……cop that pulled me over didnt believe it….made me open the hood….lol….then wrote me a ticket that cost me $100…..in 1983 that was big time expensive….lol
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
was at the Georgia game in 77
couldn’t get tickets, so we set on the tracks at the end of an endzone, 6 or 8 of us, bout 2,000 GA fans, we had a blast, bet 3 of the guys next to us 10 bucks each that we would win……and they all payed up….Ky 33….Ga 0….hellava game, and a good time…lol
