UK Basketball Releases Three Walk-ons
Looks like Matt Scherbenski, Adam Delph, and Dwight Perry have been dismissed from the team. The only walk-on that will remain is Mark Krebs.
From WKYT's website:
Sources have told 27 Sportsfirst that 3 Kentucky Basketball Walk-ons will not be back next season.
Matt Scherbenski, Dwight Perry and Adam Delph have been dismissed.
Coach Calipari told the media in one of his earlier press conferences that he would only keep a few walk-ons.
With these players leaving it ups the total to 12 players that have left the program.
Mark Krebs is the only walk-on left on the team.
Thoughts? I hadnt heard about this and saw it on KSR. Needless to say, there were a wide range of comments over there.

I haven't decided how I feel about this
I hate it for the kids, and I don’t really know how having a few extra guys around hurts the program, but I’m sure Cal has his reasons. I’d sure like the know what they are, though.

what does a coach /team gain by this?
And with all the spirit he has, at least Perry should be made honorary cheerleader.
Someone will have to explain the thought process on this to me…

This is not a departure from what Coach
said when he arrived at UK. He said he didnt keep many walk-ons. I really believe that after seeing everything about his offense, that he likes to keep the players that are playing, practicing together as groups…( i.e. have a group of starters, a group of backups, but he only practices the players that will see playing time) I dont necessarily see this as bad, because it gives the coaches less guys to keep up with, and makes the substitution patterns easier to formulate. Sometimes I think that maybe BCG had TOO many players, and it gave him so many options that guys could not get used to playing with each other. This way the guys know they will play, but they will still have to work together to get time.

Perry does bother me a bit
The guy has been around the program seemingly forever… I don’t see any harm in letting him stick around for his senior year.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I've been reading a little
Here and there since knowing about this latest with the walk-ons. Coach Cal put up a weekend message on his website trying to explain his decision. It does make sense to me but I hate to see Perry off the team.

Perry
bothers me a lot bit. Im pretty pissed off about Cal letting him go. Matt and Adam were only around last season but Dwight has given three years to UK and been a great teamate and recruit host. He deserved to have a senior night with the rest of the senior class. I am extremely unhappy with Cal about this.

yes -
i am not really happy. figured his leadership and reputation as a recruit host would keep him through his senior year.
that being said, he would not have practiced at all…..
only one rule in my house - uk has to be your favorite college bball team

There Can Be Only One
It is sad for those let go, but I agree with ABC. It’s about having guys that can play well and play well together. I get the feeling that Coach Cal’s standards for being a Wildcat are so high (as they should be) that you even our walk-ons would start on any other college basketball team. I am still disappointed that, Landon Sloan and Dwight Perry were let go. They both had huge hearts and gave a spark off the bench quite a few times. Mark Krebs must be practicing well. I think it would be great to see another walk-on that could really play. UK has had a few of those. Then the hometown hero might get some actual playing time as opposed to being a motivational sub or the victory cigar. Just my two cents.
A true fan never "Boos" their own team...EVER. GO CATS!!!

I'm Not Upset At All
Yeah I know these guys worked hard while at UK but this is a new generation where it is all about winning.(finally)

Why should anyone be upset?
These guys were allowed to practice, travel and be involved in games in a way that just about every other kid in this state would kill for. So it only lasted one year for some or more for others. Jeez, complaining about not being allowed to continue on is like being told that you have been given an unlimited supply of New York strip for life and complaining that it is not prime rib. Being given one year is more than anyone I personally know has ever been allowed to have. What does it say about us when we complain that guys who were given an opportunity to be a part of something that they did not have the talent to be involved with in the first place are owed more.

It's just sentiment there lawdog.....
we havent had much to be excited about lately except what great kids some of these guys were. It’s natural that there is going to be some resentment and sadness when they are no longer a part of what will be a much better team this year.
If it makes anyone feel better though, there is some talk about letting Krebs have the last scholarship this year since he is a senior. It would be a nice gesture on Coach’s part, unnecessary, but a nice gesture.

Wow....let's get Cal a Nobel prize.
Or at least a statue to recognize him for his huge heart. :-)

Statue
I can see him getting a statue someday.
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

I think that a prize or statute would be a bit much. However, since the young man may receive his final year of college free of charge with a full athletic scholarship and get to go everywhere with the team, I would think that he would be quite pleased.
Some have received statutes for less.
