Who's the best active college basketball coach?
In one of the threads yesterday there was a discussion about the best college basketball coaches in the country today.
There are many criteria which determines the best coach; recruiting acumen, in-game coaching, game preparation, etc. Today we examine which coach you would want coaching a must win game versus evenly matched competition.
Basically, if you had to win one game, who would you want your coach to be. This will help determine which coach ASOB feels is the best in-game coach working today.
If you choose "other" please let us know in the comments section which coach you would select. And remember, active coaches only.

no real surprise
in that coach k and billy d have no votes.
i think if you took calipari out of the running, izzo would win. may win anyway, but i think he’d win easily otherwise.

At this point there are 31 votes
I’m not so surprised that K, Matta, and Donovan don’t have any votes, but I am surprised that Boeheim has two.
I am also a bit surprised that Calhoun and Howland have no votes.

I Voted Coach K
But it’s really a tie between K and Roy Williams.

No
Tubby is one of the Top 10 to 15 active coaches.
If people accurately posted facts about him, I’d never mention his name They sometimes don’t so I often do.

other
I voted for Mark Few because I like his style of play, and I wanted to see someone in the “other” column.

Billy Gillispie
KIDDING!!!!!!! I voted for our current coach. :)
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Izzo
Can anyone honestly say they wouldnt take Izzo over any of these guys if the talent level of both teams were equal?
Look how far he has repeatedly taken his Spartan teams against IMO often more talented opponents.

I was torn between Cal and Izzo
I picked Cal, just because he got all those great players to come play in C-USA, then won big.

I like Cal more as my coach
just because he brings in so much talent and is no slouch at coaching BUT if we were thinking strictly in game coaching acumen I think I would take Izzo.

Izzo Is Certainly Top 5
But his teams sometimes underachieve despite having lots of talent on the roster.

5 FF, 1 NCAA Title In About 15 Years
Pretty impressive start to his career.

No doubt in my mind.

Izzo for me
I thought that what Tom Izzo did this year in the NCAA tournament against Kansas, Louisville and Connecticut, with not-so-stellar talent was masterful. He may not be the best recruiter, but in a game situation he wins my vote.

How in the world can anyone...
…vote for Rick Pitino as best “active” coach..???
Blows my mind…
BTW, I voted for Izzo… Love coach Cal, but Izzo is a frequent FF participant…
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.

Pitino Is One Of The Best (Top 10 Anyway)
Much better in 1990’s than 2000’s but still a very good coach.

matta?
i can see how you could make an argument for any of those coaches (even if they are weak ones), but I don’t think Thad Matta belongs on the list. I don’t know his whole coaching histoory, but have his teams done anything, outside the Greg Oden-led team?

Coach K
Not likely than anyone detests Duke more than I, thus that I voted for Krzyzewski was quite a pill to swallow. I did so for basically two reasons: the most impactive being the comments of the professional members of the 2008 USA team; the other being the poll stipulation of against evenly matched competition. Duke has been — and will likely remain so — athletically inferior to many of its foes and in most of its defeats.
"[T]he opinion which gives to the judges the right to decide what laws are constitutional and what not, not only for themselves, in their, own sphere of action, but for the Legislature and Executive also in their spheres, would make the Judiciary a despotic branch."

That Happened To UK In The 1960's
The Cats were overmatched athletically by their opponents, especially in NCAA play.
I think the 60’s are the only decade in which UK wasn’t above .500 in NCAA play.

Tubby got votes???? ROFLMAO
How many “must win” games have we seen Tubby tank? Memories are short around here…

My memory is not short.
I voted for the Tub. The question was not which coach would you want to have build your program (Calipari for me) nor who has had the most success (Izzo or Williams for me) but, with equal talent in one game only, who would you take. Frankly, I can’t recall a game where Tubby was outcoached by someone with equal or lesser talent. Plus I can recall him beating just about every coach on the list with equal or lesser talent. Don’t let your dislike of the former coach cloud your judgment.

I Remember 3 That He Didn't "Tank"
March 1998 – versus Duke, Stanford, and Utah.
That is the ONLY W (by UK) over Duke in 30+ years.
The pure hatred for OTS boggles my mind.

Tubby's not so bad
There’s no doubt that you won’t find many better coaches on the bench than Tubby and to be frank, I think he’s a better coach today than he was ten years ago. I do think that on a number of occasions that he was unable to coax any offense out of his players in pressure situations. As great as our defenses were under Tubby, our offenses at times were unable to score sufficiently. You can make the same case against Izzo, but I still think he edges out Tubby.
