Colin Cowherd - New low for the media

“Cal is to coaching what Michael Jackson is to babysitting, either way there are going to be violations.” - Colin Cowherd

Star-divide

I'm sure some of you have heard about some of his comments yesterday on Cal. However, the above quote (via uksportsinfo) is crossing a line, in my opinion. So, you compare possible violations to child molestation? I expect nothing less from ESPN, which has lost its way.

I guess I just do not find anything about children being molested funny.

Thanks for the link coop,

Now what? They own the broadcast of our games, which I have never been fond of, to be honest. Unless they hire some of the great announcers we like, a few of them being former Wildcats, we will have to listen to this before, during and after the games. They will own clips of our games, I assume, post games news conferences, I may be totally wrong on that…..

But this is not going to stop. Not from ESPN evidently. I know they “bought” the whole SEC telecast but, I won’t listen to it. Not stupid, idiotic accusations, such as this. I may want to see the the DDMO nicely executed, actually I am looking forward to it. But it is looking like my mute button will be on and the Cats on the radio. The BBN is huge. I wish we could do something about it.

Ok,

so obviously this statement is WAY out there. Comparing Calipari to Michael Jackson in any sense is just bad.

Although I have heard of Cowherd, I’m not personally a listener (he has a radio show, right?) or a follower of his and don’t know about his on-air personality. Is this type of comment the norm for his show?

by BigSkyCat on Jun 5, 2009 11:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

But wait!!!!

Michael Jackson has never been found guilty right? Isn’t that the standard we are working with? Looks bad on the surface and all, but you really have to look…..yadayadayada.

Actually the offensive part is the whole thing

I am no Michael Jackson fan of any significance, and other than the hanging the child out the window thing he did, I know very little about the man. However, suggesting that children will be violated by anyone is simply unacceptable. Is there not some sort of law that governs a man making statements like that? It s time to end the rhetoric….time to end the nonsense….and time to let all of this egomaniacal b.s. come to an end by everyone. Can’t we all just get along??

I guess not….and I am guessing Hoze that you do not endorse child abuse as well…..can’t see you going off that much of a deep end.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

I will chalk it up to you missing my point.

Actually its the "point" that I was referring to being offensive

any idiot….and I use that term loosely, because idiot may be too good for this individual, who would suggest something like that needs to be censored. The fact that you Hoze wanted to elaborate on it, brings me to question your judgement a little bit…..you are usually the type of person that takes the “high road”, at least metaphorically…..this is beneath you….

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

I thought the same thing ABC

was kind of surprised you wanted to elaborate on this Hoze. I thought it was pretty low. Not your usual high and mighty standards.

Let me painstakenly spell out my point.

Post after post have defended Cal writing that he shouldn’t be called a ‘cheater’ because he hasn’t been found guilty by the NCAA. Repeated comments say it’s unfair to even associate him with cheating because his record is clean in this regard. The same standard should be held here….MJ has never been found guilty.

I find it ironic that most people use this tactic to defend Calipari, but totally ignore it while cimbing aboard their moral high horse to shout what is offensive v. humor. Just sayin’.

by davw83 on Jun 5, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah but

the offensive part has nothing to do with guilt as much as it does with Cal being compared to an “accused” child molester. You’re twisting this to be about guilt.

by slidemank on Jun 5, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Hoze, you missed the point

The point was the comparison he made. Everyone and their brother can make critical comments if they choose, that isn’t what ticked me off. I just happen to know people who were abused as children, so I took offense to that part.

Shock media at its finest.

by btcoop71 on Jun 5, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then I guess it's okay to call Calipari an outright cheater.

If you think MJ is a child molester. Both has been accused or associated with their ‘indisrections’….neither has been found guilty. Get it?

Rediculous

The debating about this is getting really old and rediculous when we are actively comparing cal to an accused child molester. Give it a rest. Its making you look really bad.

by Thomas Hunt Morgan on Jun 5, 2009 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey HozeKing, cut these guys some slack....

… our coach is having more mud slung at him than my horse does when he runs in the back of the pack on a sloppy racetrack— but at least at the track it’s due to an ‘act of God and/or nature— coupled with a slow early turn of foot’, not an ’act of Pat Forde, Mark Story, and a hundred other marginally talented little sports elves piling on trying to make names for themselves."

Of course you are right, the analogy that Cowherd was in all likelihood reaching for (and in this case reaching too far with a horrible choice of subject matter) was the PERCEPTION IS REALITY analogy. Or the NOT OFFICIALLY FOUND GUILTY, BUT WHERE THERE’S SMOKE THERE’S FIRE analogy. I think he made a really bad choice in choosing how to make that comparison, but I seriously doubt that he woke up with the idea “Hey, I would love to compare Cal to a child molester today—- wonder which molester I can think of to make the comparison?”

As for my fellow Wildcat fans calling for EPSN to stockpile former Wildcats to fill the announcers’ chairs, or CENSOR Cowherd for making a joke about this subject matter - (a subject matter that I myself do not find in any way humorous)— all I can say is I trust that the latter are boycotting latenight television, or at the very least calling for its censor— because a quick google of “Michael Jackson Jokes” will reveal that Jay Leno, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Amy Poehler, etc… all had an unfortunate FIELD DAY with Jackson’s molestation trial.

I of course feel as if you are on the short end of the debates around here that I have read (you are a Louisville fan- so something HAS to be wrong with you!), but think that unfortunately you are just not going to be able to get your point understood on this one.

All of that being said, as a Wildcat fan, I look forward to the clear gap between UK and UofL in both football and basketball over the next several years…..

Our best response...

…. is unfortunately not a very ‘fast actin’ one— as it is to simply win, win big, and win clean for the next several years. Then, all of the mud slung our way (and our coach’s way!) will reasonably come across as “STALE petty jealousy”, as opposed to the “(more or less) FRESH petty jealousy” that it is today.

A second point is that we need to realize that we are in for a long haul on all of this PERCEPTION = REALITY annoyance— it isn’t going to go away overnight (if at all). So we really, really have to learn to PACE OURSELVES on just how often— and how hard— we get worked up over all of this…. otherwise, we will in short order start raising our stress levels so high that ASOB members start falling away with self-inflicted strokes and heart attacks… dwindling the numbers down to almost nothing! Hey—- do you think that maybe THIS is all part of HozeKing’s diabolical Super-Villain plan to get rid of the blue and Take Over the Bluegrass?? It’s certainly cheaper than a giant death-ray gun pointed eastward down 64….

Indisrections??????

Is that an indiscriminate . . . . . . .? If you’re gonna throw stones at someone’s spelling (see below), better use spellcheck. You are, of course, technically right about the analogy, but using an allegation of child abuse to make a point about NCAA violations is a foul, regardless of how one feels about a coach.

by oldcat'69 on Jun 5, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let's get real though

If Cal was found guilty of improprieties concerning the Memphis program all his detractors would be screaming “I told you so and hooray for the NCAA and their ruling”. However, since he’s not implicated all those same folks are screaming that he’s shady and getting away with something; implying the NCAA is not doing their job properly. In other words, there is a double standard. If it doesn’t fit your view, you just conveniently say the wrong decision was made.

The herd

is sometimes entertaining as sportstalk goes. These guys have to fill up 3 hrs of air time so they have to come up with at least 100 of these stupid analogies everyday. “Why choosing a draft pick is like choosing a girlfriend…etc.” This analogy happened to be particularly stupid. Note to Colin…comparisons to Hitler, child molestation and racial controversies are not a good idea. Virtually everything else works.

It doesn't matter if his shoe does or does not need UK sponsor money.

He’s a national ESPN personality and gets good ratings. ESPN won’t take him off the air because he made some message board UK fans upset.

Dead Solid Perfect On A Friday Nite

"[T]he opinion which gives to the judges the right to decide what laws are constitutional and what not, not only for themselves, in their, own sphere of action, but for the Legislature and Executive also in their spheres, would make the Judiciary a despotic branch."

Bingo!

Since I’m not familiar with Cowherd, this is why I asked about his on-air personality. If this type of statement is the norm for his show, then it really shouldn’t be all that surprising or particularly offensive. I mean, if ridiculous comparisons such as this are the pulse of his show on a daily basis, it’s not like he went off the deep end one day and singled Cal out.

by BigSkyCat on Jun 5, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He has a national show on ESPN radio.

He usually doesn’t get this off-color, but he does take controversial stances on the current issues, and he uses unorthodox evidence or approaches in getting to his opinion. However, his job is to get ratings, and he’s good at it. He’s not a total crackpot, though – he knows his history and facts. While I don’t actively try to listen to his show, if it’s on the radio while I’m driving, I listen.

But while some people might find this offensive (I don’t; I just find the statement to be glaringly unoriginal), it’s kind of typical, and he didn’t go “off the deep end” in the context of his show.

No Parallel

There is absolutely no parallel between Michael Jackson being accused and tried for child molestation by the courts and Coach Calipari being accused of nothing by the NCAA! Those that may claim it is analogist are simply proving how low they are willing to stoop. It is ridiculous.
Michael Jackson was never convicted in a court (maybe thanks in part to a large law settlement paid to the chief witness and accuser) but he certainly admitted to sleeping with young boys though no sexual misconduct has ever been proven. The fact is the charges had merit at least and are much more serious than NCAA violations. Show me any evidence that suggests Coach Cal had any knowledge of SAT cheating and I will entertain criminal comparisons if only metaphorically. But at least wait until there is even charges against the coach before charging guilt. Otherwise, it is time to stop the nonsense. There are no comparisons.

Colin Cowturd

Was in Portland, OR for a time before going “big-time”…was a weasel then…as for the comparison to MJ…my guess is there are countless tasteless jokes to be had from the comparison, that out of good taste, I will let pass…“I’ll Be There” is still a classic song and Cal’s last recruiting class will be considered a classic (I hope) when the years progress…Colin admits he doesn’t follow college hoops, so for him to even speak about Calipari shows his willingness to speak ill for the sole purpose of ratings…he gets us riled up…we blast him…he enjoys it and (I’m quoting him now) “I make more money the more I am hated”…my guess is he needs a bump in his salary, because he just pissed off an entire state plus some…he’s like that bastard kid in grade school that would say things just to get a rise out of you and laugh while you got in trouble for retaliating (only in his case, he gets richer the more hate mail he gets)…like my mom used to say… just ignore him (i.e stop listening to his crap show…like I have done) and realize that whatever spews out of his mouth is better used for someone elses’ fertilizer…
