Anyone Else Find this Annoying?
Saul Smith's warning to the University of Kentucky struck me the wrong way. Considering that he is neither sage with the wisdom of many years nor a player who made a legendary impact on the Wildcats, what puts him in the authority position to "counsel" the University of Kentucky men's basketball program? The Lexington Herald article cites
Saul's Facebook page--funny how often comments on Facebook come back to bite people--where Saul says:
"Bad bad day for my alma mater," Smith wrote on Thursday. "The UK athletic program will never regain its true champion nature with Businessmen running it. Never, no matter how many so called blue chip players you bring in. You can’t sacrifice your integrity for success. You just can’t do it. I’m an alum and I deserve a clean-ran program, plain and simple. Period, and if anyone disagrees, you, my friend, shouldn’t support the program I played 4."
This from someone who would have never seen the playing time he got, and perhaps never been an assistant coach at a Division I school so young in life, had it not been for ... well, let's say I don't think his skill and talent have always been the door opener for him...

Oh clearly I am behind the times
Well, I guess I may be in trouble with Forty, too. The tone was just too arrogant for me, killing the value of the message.

I don't know Tubby
or anyone close to him, but I’d have bet on that. In this instance, the acorn strayed pretty far from the tree. Regardless of your opinion of him as coach, Tubby was too classy to ever pull anything close to this. I’m sure Saul has been appropriately chastised.

Generation Skip
It’s not unheard of — in fact it’s quite common — that class skips a generation. Appears that may have happened here.

Quoted for Truth. Tubby was and is a very fine man and a class act all the way. I’m no Tubby appologist, but you can’t question the man’s charachter.

Saul walks on water and is the greatest PG in UK history……my bad……
This was all over at the Minn SB blog. I said that only Porter and Sutton were worse PGs in my lifetime, and I stand by that.

Saul was a solid defender
I am not going to claim that Saul was UK caliber talent as a HS prospect, but I always respected his hustle, his tenacious defense, and his ever-present enthusiasm on the court. He was very competitive, had a lot of heart IMO. He was the hardest working man in showbiz, so to speak, during his time at UK. I will always respect him for that.
We're all just a banana peel away from eternity.

I Said This
Saul won 1 NCAA title, 3 SEC titles, 3 SECT championships in 4 years. Average 27-8 record.
I said those were pretty good results. You said they were terrible results.
I am right. You are wrong.

Dont have much of a dog in this fight BUT i cant resist.
Forty i noticed that you like to use team stats to prove how good you think a player is. While they arent completely without merit you do realize that basketball is a team sport. UK’s accomplishments while Saul was here do not directly relate to his value as a player. You stats regarding his assists and steal would of course be completely valid.
I was just making a joke about the NBDL. I dont really have a serious position regarding Saul’s value as a player.

Stop.
I’m not exactly sure how it happened, but I actually had the rather unfortunate luck to stumble across the incredibly ugly debate you and btcoop had about this the other day at The Daily Gopher.
And it’s funny, debating Saul’s performance as a player is just as irrelevant here as it was there. This post, just like the Gopher post, is about Saul Smith’s latest and rather unfortunate comments about UK, not how good or bad he was as a point guard.

Do You Feel The Same Way About Dale Brown?
Check his career FG % and 3-pt FG % (1992 and 93).
You’ll be surprised how close they are to Saul.

I actually believe
Saul’s last name hurt him more than it helped him. People thought he was going to be Drazen Petrovich or something. We would have been pretty good if he played point last year, I think.

In Saul's defense,
he did change the message relatively quickly and somewhat apologized and gave support for Calipari.

Saul was a good PG
he had heart hustle and effort. something that was lacking at that position at that time. i lobbied for his starting over Blevins. he may not have been the ace guard that we have coming in next season but he put forth more effort and hustle on the court than 98% of the rosters he was a part of.
sure his dad may have had something to do with that but at least he tried instead of slacking off because of who his dad was. and i don’t believe he started because of who his dad was, he started because he was better at that position than what was currently available.

Saul and Tubby
I’m not going to get into the mudslinging going on in this post by both sides, well, both sides meaning Forty and everybody else, but here is my two cents worth. Tubby will never get the credit he deserves for winning a national title and several SEC titles (no I’m not like Forty and tell you the exact numbers) but also much of the criticism Tubby gets is deserved. He was a spotty recruiter and when he did recruit well he didn’t win like he should have meaning FF’s and national championships. He played a style, especially offensively that was like enduring a root canal, which hurt recruiting. And he was stubborn because he could have stayed if he just made changes to his coaching staff,he wasn’t “run out of town” as some like to say. And then there is Saul. He too doesn’t get the credit he deserves but he wasn’t all that great either. You can show all the numbers you want but I would take Wayne Turner and Travis Ford any day of the week over Saul Smith. Tubby would have been better served to have let Saul play elsewhere rather than have both endure what was a firestorm during Saul’s career. Then Tubby has the nerve to ask that Saul be added to his coaching staff at a time when changes were needed and asked for but not by adding Tubby’s son. Just my opinion.

Torture numbers, and they’ll confess to anything.
