O'Neill to USC
KSR reporting Kevin O'neill to Southern Cal
USC Hires Worst Coach Possible
They passed on Gillispie ..... (as Homer Simpson would say) DOH!
O'Neill's last college outing was at Arizona where he was interim coach during Lute Olsen's leave of absence. This past year he has been with the Memphis Grizzlies. OJ Mayo also was with the Grizzlies this year ... is there a connection there??
O'Neill: "I'm very excited about this opportunity to coach at such a great institution as USC, with its tremendous athletic and academic tradition," he said in the statement.
He may want to choose his words a litlle more carefully in the future with that reference to "academic tradition".

I think USC did the absolute best they could.
Billy Gillispie in California would be an even worse fit than BCG in Kentucky.
Texas
He belongs there. He knows it. So do the rest.

No one thinks that Theus was a good fit for USC?
Personally I was under the impression he could have been exactly what they were looking for. O’Neill is NOT the worst coach they could have hired, I just dont know if he was the best. They needed a Slam Dunk choice the same way we did.
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
Theus was not a realistic candidate...
Upon closer inspection his time at NMSU Theus was not the type of coach we needed. He had some player arrests and a lousy APR.
That is the last thing SC needed.
Considering the team is going to be penalized into the ground,
I think the situation here IS NOT that USC is taking a chance on O’Neill….it’s more like O’Neill is taking a chance on USC.

You know, maybe but maybe not...
conventional wisdom say yes…USC hoops will be a nuclear wasteland when the NCAA is done with them but then again, when has the NCAA ever done anything consistent?
O’Neill is looking for a last chance at trying to build some semblance of a legacy…who knows if USC is it for K.O. but he jumped at the chance when no one else would.
My old drill instructor always stressed that he wanted guys in his platoon that always struggled but never quit…guys who always looked like they could do it easily sooner or later took short cuts and that’s when things went bad…
Well, it is as good as we were going to get
I am not a fool. USC is NOT a basketball powerhouse. Dixon wasn’t coming and he was really the only one that mattered. If KO can keep us respectable then I will be cool with it.
But who is to know how this will end up….probably with some mushroom cloud attached.
Heck if K.O. just pokes a finger in the eye of UA and ucla then the hire is worth double the money…just tweaking certain bruin fans is worth its weight in gold…
Ahem…but I digress.

Ill make a little prediction here
USC is back among the PAC 10 leaders in 3-5 years……..AND the NCAA Tournament. And O’Neill makes it happen.
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
O’Neill makes it happen.
No way.
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

C'mon Tink.....
give the guy a chance!!!……maybe he will surprise you….
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
You know ...
… O’Neill recruited some good players at UT. I would think he could do at least that well at USC with their much deeper recruiting base.
I just hope for the sake of USC that his offensive coaching has evolved. He has always been a very good, even excellent, defensive coach.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
If he can find himself his own group of "unforgettables"
he can pull it out. They may not be spectacular, but the PAC-10 is not known for being that great a conference in Bball lately….but youre right Tru….he better pick up the offense, otherwise Arizona and UCLA will eat his lunch for him.
Remember, we're having fun now!!!
I don't think he can either
He wasn’t USC’s first, second or 3rd choice … they were turned down by Jamie Dixon (Pitt), Lon Kruger (UNLV) and Jeff Van Gundy ….
The PAC-10 draws alot of the top talent out west … and his style of play (slow/deliberate/defensive) will make it hard to recruit IMO. Top 2010 PG Gary Franklin has decided to leave the team because “…that’s not a style I see myself playing in”. Then there is the NCAA sanctions to come… It’s going to be tough..
