Was There Ever Better Evidence ....
… that good players make good coaches? And great players make great coaches?
"The prosperity of commerce is now perceived and acknowledged by all enlightened statesmen to be the most useful as well as the most productive source of national wealth, and has accordingly become a primary object of its political cares."

Where's Gillispie?
37 coaches listed. He’s not listed.
Gillispie must not be either good OR great coach???

It ranked the "top current coaches."
Gillispie is not a “current coach.”

That Makes Sense BUT
Doubtful he would be listed anyway.

In the first paragraph - it gives selection criteria
it states: “What a guy did in the mid-90s doesn’t matter near as much as the direction his program is currently headed” Gillispie has no class (oops, I mean no program) …. then it goes on to say … “past accomplishments with present achievement and a paved road for future success.” Gillispie’s present achievement is…well, you know….(shall we say only court related). And as for a road paved for future success … well time will tell, but it’s not looking so good right now.
I thought Pitino was a little too high, ahead of Howland and Boeheim. He was such a developer of talent when he was at UK – I just haven’t seen that since he’s been at UL

Pitino In 1990's Vis-A-Vis 2000's
219-50 in 8 years at UK. Numerous NBA players on his teams. 1 NCAA title, 3 FF appearances.
200-73 in 8 years at U of L. Few NBA players on his teams. 0 NCAA titles, 1 FF appearance.
He’s ranked on his past, not his future.

The 5 Best Coaches Ever (Wooden, Rupp, D Smith, Knight, Coach K)
Had many of the best players in their eras.

I would agree with those five
I think an asterisk is in order however, Pat Summit with 15FF and 8NC’s is awfully impressive

Summit And Auriemma
Good point, ukcris, I’ve often pondered on how Pat Summit and Geno Auriemma would fare coaching the other gender. My guess is that after a period of adjustment they would be successful — perhaps not to the same high level but successful nevertheless.

What coach has ever won without great players?
Any list of top 5 coaches will also include a list of top players, that doesnt demean anyone’s coaching job.
Phil Jackson is by all account now the greatest NBA coach of all time. He didnt do it with bad players either.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!

Interesting that you bring that up
I always thought Jackson wasn’t that great of a coach because he had Jordan, Pippen, Cartwright, Paxson … (forgive me for forgetting the rest) …. but, he looks like a genious now with the team that is assembled around Kobe and without Shaq. I think great coaches are great motivators … but as you point out they have to have great players around them…. The Cavs have Lebron James and NBA coach of the year Mike Brown but you don’t see him wearing 10 rings .. wish thye had gone further this year.

Overlooked Geno
But 10 FF and 6 NC are just as impressive. Coaching is a lot about people skills and motivating players …. As you point out, I think both would be successful in the men’s game as well.

Geno Is VERY Tough On His Players
In a way, similar to Bobby Knight.
Summitt has a more positive approach. Gene is negative. Both work their players EXTREMELY hard. Both get results.
