ESPN releases its preseason Top 25
Andy Katz posted his early preseason Top 25, and no I'm not Pat Fordeing when I say this. Some things that should be noted...
-4 teams from the SEc are in
-3 of out those 4 are from the SEC East
-Factoring in Vandy and Florida will be the East a tough division this year.
-UL is nowhere to be found and rightfully so.
-Siena? Really?
-Katz puts us at #7 and backs it up by saying without veteran perimtere play, he can't put the Cats any higher without seeing the new players in action.

would love to be higher...
as that would mean meeks was back.
however, just glad to be in the discussion. in the toughest division of a tougher SEC this year, i would like to see some results first as well
Cal took a few years to get the DDMO running in memphis, but with the talent at UK and his experience coaching it, i would think by march (if not earlier) it will be running well.
finally, Cal will use such polls to his advantage – NO ONE uses the “no respect” card better – not even dangerfield…….
only one rule in my house - uk has to be your favorite college bball team

We will climb as we earn it....I think we are a top 5 team this year
but we ARE unproven. Coming out of the SEC EAST is going to help us once again this year….after a couple of down years, the SEC will again be able to call itself a true “Power” conference. It is going to be so nice whipping the SEC on a regular basis though. Even with all of the kids coming back to numerous schools, we will be the “Beast in the East” again….and in the SEC…..and the NCAA’s as well….I would not want the task of trying to beat this team come March…..and no one else will either.

Hoze you are truly convinced this team is top 5?...even without Meeks??
I thought you would be a tad bit more conservative….knowing the stats as well as you do….I figured the top 5 voters were the emotional ones….

Actually, for now I'd put UK around 10.
New coach with only one solid starter returning. Certainly can go higher but maybe now even that will be difficult with all the talk about the SEC being some sort of powerhouse. :-)
UofL would be about 20th, in my not so humble opinion. At least they have some guard play coming back which is good. Maybe Samardo can play up to his potential or hype.

Samarda to his...hype?
You must be kidding right?

Wake up.
He was the top center in HS his senior year. You really should know about basketball before you post a comment here.

So was Derrick Character.
semardo had no footwork and no shot. For someone ranked in the top 10 coming into college ball you should be able to do more than lower your shoulder into and slam your ogre girth into someone. Hence why he averaged about 20 pts before conference play, then (starting with UK I might add) his average dropped about 12 pts. But your right. He needs to step up into that “hype” Give me a break.

And I completely missed the section about guard play
Your just full of jokes today aren’t you :)

Let's see...
They have 2 guards returning from a final eight team and a top point guard committed. UoL needs to backfill the two forward spots this year. They are relatively okay with guard play. Do I need to explain that the sky is blue and the grass is green to you?

Yeah the final elite 8 team that got spanked when they played mch state.
How did your “star” gaurds do then? Williams and clarke carried that team, and I suppose your guys carried a lot of baggage b/c they couldnt carry you too far.
“Well when sosa plays well, he can compete with the best”
that is a load of crap. He had a game his freshman year where every shot, no matter how ridiculous it was went it and as a 60% FT shooter went like 15/15 from the line. So he ended up with 30 pts and ul fans were like OMG Sosa is amazing. Hes poised for a breakout year. It is no secret that Mcgee was the key to your backcourt pressure, his defense was in your face and when a knowles is already better than him, how does that constitute a competent guard?
No, I think I should be the one explaining the colors of nature to you

Knowles is better than sosa not Mcgee
my bad

I'll wait to respond in a couple of years.

preach it.
Its usually more fun to watch basketball teams with a competent center as well.

SEC Powerhouse
I think the league will be improved but certainly not a powerhouse. Miss. St, if they get everyone eligible will be very good, South Carolina with Downey and Archie back will be tough, and UT with T. Smith back should be good. Even Vandy had a very young team last year, and may be close to a top-25 team this year. Arkansas is the team I most want to see. They have lots of talent, but were as schizphrenic as any team I’ve ever seen. Florida? Who knows? LSU will also be very good, as should Ole Miss. So that’s 6 or 7 teams out of 12 that should be pretty good.
I may be losing my mind, but I’d put U of L in the top-15 at minimum. I think Siva will help U of L immensely. The Big East, as always, will be very tough.

Yep
Top 5 teams at UK recently:
2005, 2004, 2003, 1999, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1995, 1993, 1992.
This team is more talented than most of those.

Likely...but not as experienced and with a new coach, too.
That’s the big difference to me.

Im ok with 7
I think that’s fairly accurate. We would be top 5 based on talent alone but it’s an unproven product as of yet.
UT coming in the top 10 is completely rediculous. They are barely a top 25 team.

They do that
year after year with the Vols. It seems every preseason Tennessee and the “mighty bruce pearl” are always an unstoppable force of misery and woe. In reality they get their cans spanked when it comes to the SEC.

Agreed #7 sounds fair
for a team with 6 new players that didn’t make the tourney last year. Besides, its fun to watch a team climb the rankings.

UT in top 10
Just makes it all the funnier when they underachieve yet again. ;)
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Yeah.
Given we have a lot of potential but not that much experience plus a new coach and new system, I think seven is reasonable.

Depends
If the preseason ranking is meant to designate a CURRENT ranking, then UK probably deserves to be in the lower half of the top-10 or 12. But if the ranking denotes how UK will finish the year, then a top-5 ranking may be in order.
As long as UK doesn’t experience an inordinate amount of injuries, and PPat can stay healthy (which he has yet to do), then this team will be really, really, really good come tourney time.
I do think that KU is a clear #1, though.

Assuming this is a "beginning of the year" ranking and not an "end of year" prognostication
I think anywhere 6-12 seems about right. Having a lot of talented players and a good coach doesn’t guarantee success, but the talent is good enough for a top 12 ranking and being ranked 7th at this point (or at any point really) isn’t really much different from being ranked 6th or 8th or 9th.
