Texas Is Where He Belongs

Thank goodness he’s gone from Kentucky.

"Thank goodness he’s gone from Kentucky."

I have no idea what makes that kind of comment necessary. The first line was good enough.

I mean, Forty would lose his mind if I went around posting “Thank goodness he’s gone from Kentucky” everytime someone mentioned Saint Tubby Smith.

Ridiculous and very annoying and childish to boot. Seriously?? EVERY TIME?? That is really not necessary.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Thank Goodness He's Gone

It was a terrible 2 years. He has the worst multi-year W-L (%) record of any UK coach EVER.

Here http://www.bigbluehistory.net/bb/Statistics/coaches.html are the numbers.

Texas is where he belongs. C-USA (Houston) is right level for him.

Tubby

He has the 3rd best W-L (%) record of any multi-year UK coach ever and 2nd best NCAA W-L (%) record of any UK coach ever.

Nope

Facts are supportive of Tubby in his 10 years at UK.

Facts are anything but supportive of G in his 2 years.

Forty ...

… Please stop crusading about Gillispie. I’m getting real tired of having to insist on this.

Agreed

We get it, Forty. You don’t like the guy. His results didn’t measure up. Now stop. Nobody wants to hear it anymore.

People say bad things about Tubby that are unwarranted. We get that too. I, for one, wish they would stop that as well. That doesn’t justify this “thank goodness he’s gone” garbage every time Gillispie’s name is mentioned, especially when it adds nothing new to the conversation. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

by Acdixon on Jun 16, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It Was Time For Tubby To Go, Too

But he was generally successful at UK.

Gillispie was never successful at UK.

Big difference.

by FortyYearCatFan on Jun 16, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to say

On this point, Forty and I agree 100%. I take Tubby over Billy G, as a coach and as a man, every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis.

by btcoop71 on Jun 17, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And that's fine

That is not the issue. The issue is why it is necessary to say “Thank goodness he’s gone from Kentucky” EVERY SINGLE time the man’s name is mentioned. Surely you dont think that is necessary?

I obviously really like Billy G but I TOTALLY understand that many many MANY people do not and that is fine – to each their own.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

I really like Cal, too!

I would LOVE to see some Rupp-ish results as well. We agreed on something!!! ;)

I get what you are saying

My advice is to not take the bait……if you know what I mean.

I know what you mean.

Sometimes its hard though. I have been trying to do better with that, but sometimes enough is enough- you know? :)

Acdixon

I agree 100% with your reply to Forty. I have heard enough of his comments even though he has his stats. It’s over and forget it.

I agree with half your statement...

…Thank goodness he’s gone from Kentucky..!!!

THANK YOU JESUS..!!!!!

See

That is just a useless comment that contributes to nothing but the “anti-Gillispie” crusade. It does nothing for the conversation – just sounds childish. I completely expect this from Forty, but Vince – you are better than this. Very disappointing. :(

There's No Crusade

Calipari is an elite coach who will restore UK to prominence.

He recruits at the highest level. He coaches at that level. He WINS at that level.

by FortyYearCatFan on Jun 17, 2009 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Losing at Houston two years ago was all part of his master plan!!!

It all makes sense now…

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

UK Needs A Coach Like Rupp Or Pitino

Minimum 80% W-L record, minimum 75% in NCAA games.

Calipari will deliver on both.

True Blue But Graduated From Houston

Dont ask how I ended up in Houston, but I was born in KY. Tom Penders is a good coach. I dont really follow Houston, but I hate Billy G. Is he stalking my teams? Houston athletics are bad enough, they dont need another program dragged down.

by UKTimmy on Jun 16, 2009 4:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Houston resident here

Gillispie to UH would make perfect sense. Penders is a good coach, but frankly, Houston can do better. The Coogs have never made the NCAAs since Penders came (their best chance was a senior-laden squad that “upset” a Patterson-less Kentucky two years ago), which is, quite frankly, unacceptable. Houston has tradition (Phi Slamma Jamma), a fertile talent base in Texas HS basketball, a halfway decent (if at least Metropolitan) city that can appeal to OOS recruits, and a conference which is very much Snow White and the 11 dwarves.

I’m not saying that UH’s expectation should be a Memphis-like dominance year over year, but there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be a threat to occasionally win C-USA or at least be within striking distance of being the 2nd or 3rd C-USA team in the final 64. Heck, if UAB can do it…

Gillispie fits as prior to Kentucky, he’s engineered quick turnarounds at two Texas schools, one of which was IN C-USA, and another of which was a “BCS” school. He’s furthermore shown the ability to recruit well, or at least, well enough to turn around a Texas school. Lastly, he’d likely enforce a discipline that’s been clearly lacking in Penders-led teams.

by jc25 on Jun 16, 2009 5:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Phi Slamma Jamma

I went to UH not long after Guy Lewis retired. I never even went to a basketball game because they were so bad. I hate to tell you, but Houston has no basketball tradition. They had a great run under Guy Lewis, but since then they havent even been a blip on the screen.
As far as Billy goes, maybe because you are a Texas fan or Texas resident you havent heard the horror stories of how he treated his players, fans, media, administration, and boosters. That might work at A&M or whatever other small Texas school he was at, but I would hope the administration at UH would recognize his inability to act like a decent person to those around him. UH deserves a coach that can get them in the NCAAs, but they dont need the cancer called Billy G.

Texas A&M Is In BCS Conference

But HARDLY high caliber program.

Gillispie belongs IN TEXAS anywhere BUT University OF Texas.

If he doesn't settle this lawsuit against UK

He can forget about ever coaching in D 1 ever again. He doesn’t want the dirty laundry aired.

I Actually Hope The lawsuit Goes Through To The End

Once and for all to see, we’ll find out. No rumor, no innuendo. Just the truth with the right hand sworn.

by FortyYearCatFan on Jun 17, 2009 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree with your points

But I think the truth lies somewhere in between what you and I are saying.

I’m not sure how you can make the argument that UH has NO basketball tradition and then come out and say they had a great run under Guy Lewis (which, of course, includes Phi Slamma Jamma, two top 50 NBAers, and a freak Lorenzo Charles layup from an NCAA Championship). No doubt, they’re not Kentucky caliber, but who is? They’ve got SOME basketball tradition, and based on my reasons, there’s no reason NOT to expect an occasional trip to the NCAAs, which Penders hasn’t delivered.

On A&M, I agree they’re hardly a high caliber program, but no less so than a Georgia or Miss State in the SEC. Just the fact that you’re in a BCS conference gives you advantages and challenges that coaching in a “non-BCS” conference doesn’t. More so, the fact that A&M wasn’t a high caliber program to begin with is a point in Gillispie’s favor; he did something a, say, Dennis Felton couldn’t do.

As for Billy’s bad behavior, it may be true or may not be; the bottom line was that prior to Kentucky, he had gotten the job done at his previous coaching stops—in the state of Texas, no less. If I were a betting man, I’d say it’s more likely than not that he could replicate that success at UH. And if on-court basketball success is the true measure of how we’re judging a coaching hire, I don’t understand why you’re throwing stones at a man when your team just hired a coach that’s getting dragged through the mud in a similar fashion.

I Didn't Say Houston Had NO Tradition

The Houston of 2009 is a C-USA team.

Both Georgia and Miss St have been to FF. A&M has never been close to FF.

Gillispie will be FINE at a lower profile school (like Houston) in Texas. 20 W most years, the occasional W or 2 in NCAA.

by FortyYearCatFan on Jun 17, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tradition

You might want to stick to football, because your knowledge on basketball is quite weak. Tradition is UK, UCLA, Kansas, UNC, and Duke….. UH had nothing prior to Guy Lewis nor afterwards. Thats not a tradition, its a run under a good coach. Tradition is over a great many more years.
Georgia is a non factor because the rest of the SEC raids all the talent, for example Jodie Meeks and Randolph Morris. Miss St. is ranked no.12 by Andy Katz preseason and they have the nations leading shot blocker returning.
I personally didnt want Billy G hired because he was unproven. It is proven that he never embraced his responsibilities as the UK head coach. He also berated players, sent them to sit bathroom stalls at halftime, called Jodie Meeks a ball hog during games and ran full practices on game days. What head coach does that??
As a UH alum, I would suggest that the AD at UH talk to Mitch Barnhart first. I would rather see UH with 20 wins and no NCAAs than Billy G. have no respect for the fans, players, and administration of UH.

Be careful what you wish for

There is always the possibility that the program and administration were not completely innocent in the situation either.

I Wish For THE TRUTH

Reagrdless what it is.

Mitch B made many errors from 2007 through 2009 but corrected them all by making the change. He SHOULd have done it when Gillispie refused to sign a contract in 2008.

Well

Apples and Oranges. Billy G had two horrible years on the court, and his behavior off the court has been well documented by KSR and others. The latest blow up about Calipari was a media creation. NCAA cleared Derrick Rose, then came back a year later and said “My bad, he didn’t take the test.” Calipari has a long history of winning, and winning big.
