I`m thinking
that USC would be a great opportunity for Billy G.

I'll Be Amazed If That Happens
Gillispie needs somewhere out of the bright lights. USC is just the opposite of that,

I wonder if
he needs to take care of UK lawsuit before USC would be interested? That might speed things up and help Coach G and UK move forward faster and settle the lawsuit.

He Has The Coaching Skillset
But he cannot succeed in a high profile situation like USc would be.

G
He does like rebuilding things and that would be one hell of a project. Probably wouldnt be too much competition for that particular job right now either.
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

The word on the street
with some USC fans is that they would love to have Billy G. Not everyone sees him as the villian that many in the Bluegrass do.

Some Are Satisfied With 62% W-L Record (43% In NCAA Games)
Some aren’t. UK fans certainly AREN’T.

Right on cue forty
God forbid anyone say anything positive about the man. Thank God and Greyhound you swoop in and make some random comment to save the day like always. Good work.

Facts
Gillispie is a good coach, that’s all.
Besides 62% and 43% numbers, he has 0 conference tourney titles and 1 conference title in 7 years.
I’d think USC would seek out a different choice than Gillispie.

USC
may not have the “pick of the litter” with all that will be coming their way. Gillispie is a re-builder and that is exactly what their program will need.

I Doubt It
I really think USC would pick a coach with West Coast experience.
I’d be amazed if Gillispie were serious considered.

Rebuilder
He didnt do much of a rebuilding job here.
DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!

Whatever
I dont care. He is a proven rebuilder. I could give a rat’s a** about his experience here. This is just something we will have to agree to disagree on.
My opinion is and always will be that he was not given the time to “rebuild” here. The program was already in a state of decline when he got here. He needed time to implement his system and put players that worked in that system in it.
That is the last time I am going to say that. You all can think whatever you want and hate him as much as you like. I really could care less.

P.S
I really dont mean to sound rude about this, but I am just sick to death of anytime I make any good/positive comment regarding Gillispie then the same people just come right behind me and just have to cancel out whatever it may have been with the same ol’ negative (hate) stuff. I mean, its a free country, you can go behind me and cancel every positive I make – whatever – its just really old and exhausting.

I'm with you
He has a well deserved reputation as a rebuilder of programs that have never had any true basketball heritage and that typically are an also ran for fans to the school’s football program.
Gillispie’s failings had everything to do with the glare of the spotlight that is coaching at a “blueblood” college like UK.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

because...
…as much as you love him, there are others, (like me), that despise the man for all he “didn’t” do while at UK…
Nothing wrong with supporting your coach Tink, but be prepared to hear the debate when you do post something positive…

I think "despise" is a little strong
The man was a mediocre coach for us at best, but I would reserve that level of vitriol for coaches like Eddie Sutton who didn’t represent the school well and broke the rules.

…You may be letting your emotional ties to Billy G. cloud your better judgment… ;-)

Gillispie and USC
It may be in the spotlight as 40 says… but it will always be second fiddle to football on the college level and a big step down from the Lakers on the basketball side of things.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
by chirop1 on Jun 10, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Second fiddle
How could I forget to mention that USC basketball isn’t even the most interesting college basketball team in town?!!? UCLA will always hold that honor.
Additionally, as Tink mentioned, the school is bound to be on probation. Gillispie can step in there and labor away in the obscrurity of probation while doing what he does best… build a basketball team at a football school.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Correct...
Who ever comes in needs to have the understanding that they WILL be second fiddle. Gillespie has some intrigue with us but his tenure at UK is concerning to us as too. UK is a solid program with a looooong history…USC, not so much.
Tru…I don’t get over here as much as I should but you do an outstanding job here. You have a great community…when ours grows up I hope we can be like yours!!
Keep it up!!

Paragon
Thanks for the compliment on our site. We think it is the best UK site anywhere.
I was one of BG’s supporters but I could see his problems with the media were getting him in trouble. The UK basketball job is not just about recruiting and coaching, it is a lot more than Billy wanted to embrace. He could actually be a good fit for your program.

He's A Better COACH Than Floyd
But the USC job will demand a lot from its next coach over the next few years OFF the court.

Just got around to actually reading Clay's article
I, for one, have to think that Pitino’s attempt to bring former assistant and current Holy Cross head coach Ralph Willard back to his staff portends that Rick wants Ralph to be his successor at the ‘Ville.
Seriously? Wasn’t that who he wanted at UK when he left too? Willard has already tried swimming in the Big East waters and it didn’t work out.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Yes
Pitino recommended Willard as his UK replacement.
A (slight) majority of UK players then wanted Donovan.
CM Newton wanted (and got) Tubby Smith.

Finally We Know
It’s always been a mystery to me why UK named a football field in honor of C.M. Newton. Orlando Smith, intrigued no more.
"[T]he opinion which gives to the judges the right to decide what laws are constitutional and what not, not only for themselves, in their, own sphere of action, but for the Legislature and Executive also in their spheres, would make the Judiciary a despotic branch."

Great Hire
Won NCAA title, 5 SEC titles, 5 SECT championships in 10 years.
Thank goodness Newton didn’t listen to fraternity brothers back then.
