Pitino running out the back door?

Word on the street, according to KSR, is that rumours are pouring in from everywhere that Pitino might be considering retirement. The expectation seems to be that this is going to be announced very soon. Matt doesn't give many details and I don't want to speculate on the reasons, but I'm sure everyone can jump to the same conclusion that I see based on the recent allegations of blackmail...

Here is the KSR article link -

If he retires, doesn't that lady ultimately win (kind of) ?

She didn’t get her money, but she would have managed to influence Pitino negatively.

This is 100% rumor, though.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Though, I heard the rumors first flowing around the office, and then checked the internet. On a personal level, it lends more weight in my head to the potential truth of this, based on my colleagues.

Yeah... I have no idea

what amount of actual truth there is to this, but it wouldn’t not surprise me in the least. It’s not like Pitino hasn’t been fanning this type of smoke before. I guess it’s about time that an actual “fire” broke out.

I still consider Pitino a part of Kentucky so I hope any “retirement” or move to another school isn’t the result of something negative forcing it upon him.

So, is this the other shoe

I Highly Doubt That

Louisville would want a Top Tier coach to replace Pitino.

Gillispie is nowhere close to that. He’s not even Top 50 among active coaches.

His best fit will be a lower profile school in Texas. He’s not cut out for Top Shelf programs.

Is Pitino's ego that big 40

Sactown

I dont see Ricky P leaving UofL for Sactown. The Kings SUCK big time. The reason college coaches fail in the NBA is becuase the only teams looking to hire them are poorly managed organizations with bad or young players. He has to know he will fail in Sacramento as he did in Boston. The top shelf NBA programs always go for NBA guys when making a hire.

"Poorly managed organizations"

that’s rather funny. And in this case I think that’s right.

Aren’t the Kings owned by the Maloof brothers? It would seem that they have better heads for running and managing night clubs/hotels/casinos (as in the Palms in Las Vegas) than they do for running a sports franchise.

by BigSkyCat on May 8, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

Back in the day when they had Bibby, Christie, Peja, Webber, and Vlade, they had a pretty good thing going. No, they never got the illusive ring, but neither did Stockton and Malone. Eventually, they had to blow it up because all the players were getting too old, and they haven’t rebuilt well, but at least at one time, it seemed like the Maloofs knew what they were doing.

Goes back to the organization. The most important piece of an NBA program is the GM. It is the GM that is responsible for putting together the players.

Geoff Petrie

He has a better than average performance as GM/President of BBO: NBA EOY twice, 9 playoffs and 2 division titles in 14 seasons. He and Kings were unfortunate to have to beat Shaq and Lakers — not to mention, the officials — on road to championship.

by Wild Weasel on May 8, 2009 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

That's not a bad record

But they havent made any significant moves in the last couple of season except to trade away players that can help them. They need to add some significant pieces to get back to being respectable.

Just wondering

What happened to the UL fan that was always posting on here?? Since all of the great news at UK with the hiring of JC and the recruits coming plus all of the bad Cards news with maybe more to come,he has gone AWOL.

HozeKing showed up Thursday and yesterday

to blather on about how he couldn’t believe UK would sink to such depths as to recruit John Wall. He made a few other statements to get a rise, and left again. I’m sure he’s still lurking, waiting to strike.

I’m surpised he hasn’t commented that he thinks Patterson is stupid for returning—he went on and on about how Patterson should stay in the draft and that only an idiot (paraphrasing) would return.

You guys got a little ahead of yourself regarding Pitino, huh?

The yada-yada going back and forth on these rumors exceeds what my in-laws do back in Henderson. Too funny.

Yea, I was wrong about Patterson. There is no accounting for ‘stupidity’. It will be interesting to see how he is going to prove himself as a face-to-the-basket player, a 14’ shooter, a passer, and a ball handler in Gillispie’s system since he has never proven that he has those skills. If he does well, it will be a good move for him…..but that is a huge if.

Geeez, Blbskue, I haven’t had someone so interested in that activity since that little red headed girl in 8th grade….kind of creepy really.

Patterson can benefit at all by returning?

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on May 11, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

He absolutely CAN benefit.

But I think the risks out weight the rewards. I think it can be fairly argued that one of the reasons he was so highly ranked was due to his potential. By choosing to come back, he has to turn that potential into proof. If he can learn and prove the skill sets I stated above, great for him.

If he doesn’t, it won’t be a good move. Scouts tend to pick apart your game if you stay too long. I offer Hansborough as proof.

He was the player of the year last year.

This year he got his game picked over and picked over. Nothing he did this year improved his standings…arguably all his hard work and winning the NC just hurt it. Even Ole Roy referenced this in his post game conference.

What thing? The extortion?

Who knows. But all the rumor mongering and the back & forth on this board serves as evidence why this crime is considered so serious.

'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'

by HozeKing on May 11, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

He does not deserve any undue criticism as far as I am concerned

in this extortion case, but I have NEVER seen one of these sports related he said-she said situations come out completely clean for either side, guilty or not. I would have loved to see the guy wind up in the Hall of Fame without a blemish anywhere, but you have to admit that this thing will be like an albatross around his neck for a while….win or lose.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on May 11, 2009 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

That's my point....there was nothing in this case that is 'sports related'.

The woman’s lawyer from the get-go stated that it wasn’t about the university or recruiting. But regardless, the drum beats on….and that is the reason extortion is so serious.

I Say Good-Bye, Good Riddance To Pitino When/If He Leaves

He had a remarkable 2 years at UK in 1996 and 97.

His other 20 years never matched those 2 seasons.

by FortyYearCatFan on May 9, 2009 1:02 PM EDT reply actions

Not me

I will always be a RP fan. Regardless of how people feel about him now,he did a lot for the program returning it to dominance in the 90’s. He had more than two remarkable years at UK in my opinion. Every year he had the team in the hunt for a FF with the exception of his first two because of probation. The 90’s were nothing but fun for me when he was at UK. And I think he has done a great job at UL.

I hope he stays at UL because I think the rivalry will be even more intense with Coach Cal here. I think it could become a even better rivalry than UNC-Duke if RP stays.

by maysvilleblue on May 9, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

What is your point, Forty?

As far as I can tell, all you’ve really shown here is “96 and 97 were Pitino’s two best years” though you seem to be implying that a 78% win percentage is unremarkable or worse. (?)

by Gobe Igbloo on May 9, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Pitino's Fame Is Built On 1996 And 1997

Those are the only 2 years (out of 22) where he ever won FF game(s).

by FortyYearCatFan on May 10, 2009 8:03 AM EDT up reply actions

40 you really give NO credit to Pitino for

bringing the program back from purgatory? How can you say that….He coached the greatest comeback I have ever witnessed in a game, took a group of kids who were not much more than a lot of heart and guts to within a hair’s breath of winning what I consider the greatest tournament game of all time…brought a new style of basketball to UK, and made us once again a national power, and you give him credit only for having 2 good seasons….How can you justify that

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

Oh, Sure

I am not sure if I

would give that the same regard since Joe was the coach when the probation happened, but the fact remains. Most coaches would not have survived their program being put on probation, I am glad UK let him stay.

no, this makes no sense

If you want to say “Pitino was excellent but not the second coming of the messiah you crazy people” then fine. But you said “goodbye and good riddance” and threw out some stats as if he was an unremarkable coach.
