Lesson
The lesson — Stay away from message boards.
As of now, there is no way to regulate what is written on any Internet site (other than self-regulation … yeah, that’s funny I know), so the players and parents should learn to stay away if they can’t deal with negativity and idiotic statements.
You see Ken.....
That is one of the main reasons, I decided to choose A Sea of Blue exclusively as my site. Disagreement is going to happen, but not extreme stupidity. (So far, lol)…. This Wisconsin thing got way out of hand.
:-)
Blue, there is no other color to Bleed !!!
I derived the same idea...
I was also surprised that he bothered to look at some of the message boards after reading the story about himself. I’ve always thought blog contributors/message board posters, etc. are crazy when they make themselves believe their mark on the web is significant enough to reach a player or recruit and make a difference.
Another interesting angle here is that there are critics of almost every recruit these days…maybe Blue committed to Wisconsin too early and was looking for a way out.

I have a different view about the recruits and even the players.
Many think they don’t have the time to read all this stuff, but I have always thought they do.
Some of the comments I read bashing Hartline made me sick last season. I know this site tries it best, but the players at UK and recruits, even parents, read these comments.
This site has been the best re not putting our players down, no matter who they are or what they do on the court and field. Other UK sites are not the same and that is why I love ASOB.
The posters are certainly at fault...
but the blame should likely be shouldered by the newspaper that published the initial story…
“[T]he decommitment was prefaced by a story about the Madison native’s alleged academic woes.”
The story catalyzed the message board chatter.
Like I said earlier, this is a good and easy reason for any recruit to decommit. Someone is always bad-mouthing a player/recruit on a message board. If the player wants to decommit, all he has to do is find a message board that makes him “feel unwanted,” and he has a valid excuse for decommitting.

Vander Blue
Needs to toughen up a bit IMO…
Whats to stop fans of “other” schools to bash players that don’t sign with their school, disguised as the fans of the school that the player signed with..???
I mean, come on… Maybe if the kid should look in the mirror… After all, it was “he” who has the attitude and academic woes…
Maybe it’s just me, and that’s fine, but these elite players are pampered their whole life’s and when they get their feelings hurt, well boo-hoo…
I for one DO NOT feel sorry for him…
With all that being said, I do think that some fans go over board on these message boards… I know it’s turned me away more then once…
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
Agree
(but for different reasons, I’m sure) I have been saying for awhile that a lot of these college athletes need to “man up.” Maybe I’m a little harsh, but all this (literal) crying from division I college athletes is embarrassing.
Note: I know that this instance the kid is still in high school, but honestly, how is he going to play division I ball or pro ball if he cant deal with having his feelings hurt a little – it sucks, but that is part of it and always will be.
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

I Doubt Many Recruits Read Message Boards
i think many RECRUITERS do. They use the message board “chatter” in their recruiting.
Recruits’ families definitely read them. Carmen Daniels (for example) did not like what some UK fans were saying about Erik when he signed in April 2000.

I share your view.
Blue read the message boards because he heard there was talk about him due to the newspaper article. He didn’t read the message boards everyday.

What exactly was said about him?
I know that Ohio State almost lost Tyrelle Pryor (football) because of some message board stuff. He was supposed to announce a committment one day, then delayed it, and OSU fans laid into him on message boards.
Envy our past......Fear our future
