Hoopmasters (Clipped)

…John Wall, a 6-foot-1, 184-pound point guard from Raleigh (NC) Word of God Academy, has committed to Kentucky, according to sources close to the program. Wall is ranked as Hoopmasters’ #4 senior in the country…

Forty, you still think your bet is safe???

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

Safe?

I think it’s a fair bet. The 1978 Cats are the best UK team of my lifetime.

I claim 96

Only because I wasn’t around in 78

Nope

78 team was better.

They dominated NCAA competition and CLOBBERED the Soviets (who were the best amateur team in the WORLD back then).

10 players drafted by NBA teams. Beat 5 teams ranked in Top 20 to win NCAA title. Beat every team on their schedule at least once. Beat every Final 4 team once. #1 from start to finish that year.

by FortyYearCatFan on May 19, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually ...

… they lost their #1 ranking after losing to LSU on Feb. 11 (they were ranked #3), they moved up to #2 in the next poll, and back to #1 the poll after that.

Something I didn’t realize — They beat only one ranked team in the reg. season (N.Dame #4), but then as Forty wrote, they beat 5 ranked teams in a row to win it all — #’s 13, 19, 4, 5, and 7. They won the games by an average of 9.0 ppg, but they won only one of those games by double-digits.

Correct (My Error)

UK was briefly #3 in Feb 78. I guess I meant they started #1 and finished #1 (AP poll).

Give 3-pt FG rule to Macy, Givens, Shidler, and Claytor. That team probably hit 7 or 8 shots a game that would be 3-pointers now.

by FortyYearCatFan on May 20, 2009 6:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Amen to the 3-pt point:)

There is no doubt they rightfully dominated the top of the poll for the entire year, which is something we don’t see much of anymore.

1978 team is what got me hooked on UK basketball....

i was 14 when they won it all – had been to Memorial a few years earlier, but did not grasp it.

i remember going to Rupp for a tour when it opened- was the closest i got to a game.

i did get to go to senior day in 1978 vs UNLV.

1984 melt down in Seattle about killed me – dark ages of Sutton pushed me to the edge and even in the early Pitino years i had to stop watching games as it killed me to see the team lose.

I understand how those that were hooked by the 96-98 run have felt the past few years -

but let me tell you that i enjoyed the 96-98 streak so much more after surviving the 78 to 96 period.

When Cal gets us back to the promised land you younger ones will understand how much more special it is than the first time when you live through the down times………..

only one rule in my house - uk has to be your favorite college bball team

Imagine What 1946-54 Must Have Been Like

Something like 240 W (over 8 seasons) but just 20 L.

3 NCAA titles, 1 NIT title, Olympic Gold Medals, undefeated season, etc.
