Presumably to talk about getting Patterson back

I always enjoy Cal’s pressers. He could be talking about selecting a new paint scheme for the house and I would tune in.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I’m with you chirop1. I seriously doubt there will be any revelations but I rescheduled a phone conference so I can see it live. I love anything that reminds me that he’s our coach.

We drove by his house Saturday, and I didn’t notice a dead tree. They removed on Sunday? A big deal evidently. A beautiful house though……..

Sounds like Cal is just taking questions. No new news (is that redundant?)

He's trying to temper expectations.

Pointed out that half the team will be new players, and the other half have never played this style.

Called out Dick Vitale.

Said he expects in November and December that “balls will be flying everywhere” and people will be wondering what UK is doing.

By January, he expects it will imrpove. By February, he expects breakout games and the team playing well.

Eric Linsey had this on UKAA

about the Twiiter followers,

Touched on his Twitter account a little bit. He wondered why his Twitter account shot up by about 4,000 fans overnight. He was informed there was a national article about him being on Twitter. He then brought up that UK is going to have a personal "Web page to end all Web pages." He said it will be out in about two weeks. He said the greatest thing about the page his Twitter account, open practices, etc., is it will be all him, no filters.

Just gave a nice explanation of the RPI, and how he does it.

Says not to worry about your opponent’s RPI, only how many games they’ve won (50% of RPI). Doesn’t care who the opponents are or what conference, he just tries to schedule against teams that will won 20 or 21 games, even if they’re MAC or whatever teams.

Thinks that if Patterson does what he expects he will this season,

his second NBA contract will be WAY bigger than what it would have been had he left this season.

Reiterated the importance of the second contract—the first is what it is, said Patterson basically left $800K on the table by not going this season, but will MORE than make that up in how much larger his second NBA contract will likely be.

That's the general reasoning I've heard

Statistical suppositions are one thing, but they need some empirical evidence to support them. The few times I’ve seen such things, they’ve been based on an American population and simply transferred to China, never based on a sample of actual Chinese.

Chinese from the mountainous and northern regions

are more commonly taller than those elsewhere. I was in Japan and experienced this phenonmenon there. My folks went to China,( not to research this topic obviously :> ) and reported that this was true there as well.

Now, populations in mountainous and regions vs elsewhere I don’t have the foggiest, so the numbers could be skewed a bit there. But I would wager my year’s meager salary that you could find 1000 7 footers EASILY in ALL OF CHINA! Now, whether or not they wanted to play basketball remains to be seen. I imagine the idea of millions of yen for their family might give them a second thought on it though.

He wants the NCAA tournament to be broadcast in China.

Said that when Kansas played Memphis for the NCAA title 2 years ago, 5 million people around the world watched it (not broacast in China).

When they played the Chinese national team in China (without Yao or the Chinese dude from Milwaukee), 10 million Chinese people watched. Said that had Yao, he was told more than 100 million people would have watched.

Chinese are VERY interested in basketball.

Says that NBA does not look at

overall stats. They look at stats/minute.

Referring to the fact that if Jodie returns, he would play less minutes, but he would score along similar lines on less shots and would be more efficient. This increases his NBA stock.

The same is likely for Patterson. Stats/minute should go up.

Calipari = Obama

The story goes that after the Senator from Illinois gave his first speech on the Senate floor Harry Reid came up to him and marveled at the initial presentation and Obama replied, “Harry, I have a gift”. Is there any doubt that he does? And is there any doubt that Calipari is similarly blessed. They both have the unique ability to couch their views in terms that relate to their audience at the time: voters and fans, members of Congress and recruits, opponents and, well, opponents, and, most important, the supposedly skeptical, cynical media. Both men are marvelously and beneficently — one would hope — manipulative. Let’s hope for the nations’ — Big Blue and Red, White and Blue — sake their motives are pure.

by Wild Weasel on May 13, 2009 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

Not Political, But Communicative

Not meant to be a comparison of persons or policies but rather the quite similar communicative abilities of two individuals currently in the media spotlight. I could have chosen a conveyor of thoughts from another field I suppose but in reality one would be hard pressed to find a more comparative couple.

by Wild Weasel on May 13, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really.

There are tons of people who communicate really well, Rick Pitino being a perfect and much more apt example. There are tons of references from pop culture and from history that would not provoke a partisan response.

Whenever you compare coaches or sports teams to recent politicians, you invite a political response. This is just a classic example of why politics is not allowed here — it divides people who would otherwise be on the same side. That’s why political references should be avoided.

by catmax on May 13, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I heard the same comparisons with

Pitino and Clinton when he was here….its not about the politics….its about the “presence” of the man. Like their party, their politics or not, ALL of the men we are talking about have a “presence” that makes them easy to listen to and gives the sound of being sincere when they talk. It is a “gift” as Obama put it, because they can talk to 1 person or 100 million and still sound the same way. Obama even made a joke about it at the White House press corps dinner……said he would speak “off the cuff” and then teleprompters rise from the stage…..Kennedy had the same ability….so did Roosevelt….Kissinger….John Wayne…..you "want " to believe what they are saying

i just feel the NLOI program needs to be

updated. It WAS a good idea but it needs to be brought into the 21st century. As such, I support Wall and any other kid NOT signing it.

It has nothing to do with this kid personally.

Yes,

I understand the “why not to”. Absolutely. But I really think he is hoping that Roy will change his mind. Although Clifton and Roy cannot stand each other. But John Wall has always dreamed of being a Tar Heel.

We will be like every other school in this deal

we will wait until the day the kid decides, no matter what it may be. We have our backup solution, and another piece to the puzzle will be added in a few days, so then the kid can make up his mind. After that we will see just how diplomatic Coach can be, cause then it will be time to unload the “dead weight” and yes I know that sounds ugly, its just an expression

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

or in our case
A school would hold a scholly until Aug 1 if he wanted them to.

or “encourage” another kid to leave to make room, as we currently have -3 schollys to hold.

I didn't hear this...

I found it on John Clay’s live blog of the presser. There is a link from Tru

He is not helping now…lol

I want someone who understands this better to tell me

why do the people on John Wall’s “camp” feel like they will lose control if he is at Kentucky?? Everyone on the web keeps saying his “camp” doesnt want to give up control….and that is why Miami is still in the mix….

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

Exactly

I would think that “control” would be more lost at Miami than UK.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

by kentuckygirl0724 on May 13, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Miami

his camp could control the coach and playing situation at Miami. It’s not about his nightlife. The simple fact is at Miami he would be a big fish in a little pond and could dictate more terms to the coach.

At UK he would be a big fish in a big bond with lot’s of other big fish. If Cal disagrees with him and Wall doesnt tow the line Cal just inserts his other 5 star point guard.

Coach Calipari

Sure makes me believe he gets our deep tradition,

Scott Padgett and Tony Delk will be "coaches-in-training." Calipari said they will be part of the family. They will be watching what they’re doing, involved in camps and clinics, and basically be learning. He said if they do a really good job and one of his assistant coaches gets a job, then he’ll hire them full time.

Repeat…..We love Calipari here….

Wouldnt love to be part of a fantasy camp with these guys?

I wonder if one has to have all functioning body parts to participate of if he can still attend if he has limitations.

Count me in. My knees might not hold me through one day, but I could just mainline some ibuprofen or something.

I’d love to get a chance to play in something like that. It might cripple me for a month, but it would be worth it. :-)

You are officially

the first person to refer to me as “gramps”. Uh, thanks.

Does this mean I can’t chase girls (women) anymore?

by hoboat33 on May 13, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Lol

Hoboat you can officially chase women still unless you are married. Most women love older guys even today. I know I did back in the mid 70’s as a younger woman and I would daresay there are many women out there who would be attracted to older men.

Don’t feel bad about the gramps issue. I have been a grandma since my 40’s and I love it!

Bluegrass State Basketball has this from an article

at Bluegrasshoopster showing this as the probable roster for next season

The predicted roster now:

Perry Stevenson
Ramon Harris
Kevin Galloway
Mark Krebs-Walk On
Dwight Perry-Walk On
Jodie Meeks
Patrick Patterson
Matt Pilgrim
Darius Miller
Demarcus Cousins
Jon Hood
Daniel Orton
Eric Bledsoe
Darnell Dodson
John Wall (Probable)

An amazing transformation from a year ago, I admit……I would not want to be the coach trying to develop a defense against that squad…..

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on May 13, 2009 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

Well, I'm not SO sure I agree.

Today Calipari commented on being very impressed with Harrelson, but made NO mention of Pilgrim. At this point, I think I’d more expect to see Pilgrim leave, along with Liggins and maybe Galloway.

Liggins.....

Is he out? I may have missed it if he is…

by Doctor Mike on May 13, 2009 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

According to everyone I have seen

making a prediction about DeAndre, the consensus is that he will have to go if Meeks comes back and Wall comes.Coach hinted to he and Galloway having some problems in practice….others have hinted at him having acedemic problems, but no one has shown any proof of anything yet.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on May 13, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

That list is just speculation

Probably pretty accurate speculation, but speculation nonetheless.
