Morning Newspaper May 1st, 2009 -- Kentucky Oaks Edition
[UPDATE 1]
It's May! Hooray!
May has got to be one of my favorite months. It starts with the Derby and ends with my vacation in Myrtle Beach, which I am looking forward to with great anticipation. Fortunately, the wildfire that ran amok near my normal vacation spot has now been controlled, although there were nearly a hundred homes destroyed by the fire.
But today is the Kentucky Oaks, a race that I have often attended, but will not this year. My wife always takes at least half the day off in honor of Oaks day, and we will be enjoying the races from home today when she leaves work. I plan to complete my work early today as well so we can enjoy the horse racing. If you are participating in the Oaks day festivities too, well, good luck.
And now, for the news
UK Basketball News
- Updated recruiting class rankings from Rivals. UK now at #4 -- with a bullet, especially if Wall comes. Man, it seems like a long times since I have seen UK listed ahead of the Tarheels.
- Steve Megaree of Rivals.com thinks that UK can be a Final Four contender if Wall, Meeks, Patterson and Cousins all wind up on the team next year.
- Some reasons to get excited about Jon Hood. I was very impressed with Hood when I saw him in the Kentucky Derby Festival Classic.
- Lance Stephenson now in touch with UK? Interesting ...
- Mike DeCourcy says Patrick Patterson is in danger of blowing it. I'm not sure I agree, but Pat is a 'tweener, and that is never a great thing to be.
- This has been linked before, but it bears repeating.
- John Wall to visit ... North Carolina Central?
- Hope this turns out to be right. Barton is an awesome prospect.
- [UPDATE 1] Jerry Tipton says that Bledsoe is down to UK and Memphis.
- [UPDATE 1] John Wall says rumors he is down to UK and Miami are erroneous.
- [UPDATE 1] Bruce Pearl and John Calipari share a stage -- reluctantly.
UK Football News
- Braxton Kelley and Wesley Woodyard are together again.
Other UK Sports News
NCAA Sports News
- Tyreke Evans to remain in the NBA draft. No surprise there.
- Renardo Syndey changed his mind. He is now going to Mississippi State to play in the SEC for Rick Stansbury. Wow. MSU just became a serious contender, especially if Varnado were to decide to return.
Other News of Interest
- Greg Page, former boxing heavyweight champ from Louisville, is dead at 50. Man, that's too bad.
- I think the Kentucky Derby is way more relevant than the Indianapolis 500, but that's just me. And I live here in Louisville.
- Best. Series. Ever.
- How I learned to stop worrying about the Bulls and love this series.
- [UPDATE 1] The Swine Flu reaches the Bluegrass.

Ordered my Witness t-shirt last night
Won’t ship until 5/25 though.
Envy our past......Fear our future
Too bad the view in that picture is ruined. . .
. . .by those hideous corporate boxes they added.
And if you’re so inclined, add your Derby picks to my fan post, por favor.
The King is dead! Long live the King!
Would rather watch paint dry
Than the Derby. Just another example of how hypocritical our state can be. Online gambling and casinos bad, people wearing horrible hats, getting drunk and betting on horses that might not make it through the day, A. OK. Please. And for the record, I live in the Louisville area too.
I knew I liked you =)
I agree 1000000000000000%. I can’t STAND the Derby and refuse to watch it. You basically summarized my feelings in your post.
Maybe this year we’ll get to see ANOTHER beautiful horse get euthanized on the track….
Not that I don't agree with this
It is just very striking to me how much that incident has stuck in people’s minds. Absolutely amazing how damaging it has been to the sport’s perception. I really figured that the vast majority of people would have forgotten and moved on, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. I suppose the real damage was done to the “casual racing fan” who tunes in for 2 minutes a year, and now will never bother again.
I didn't like the derby before that incident
But that particular event was the nail in the coffin for me.
I love watching the horses
They are thoroughbreds and magnificent creatures.
I don’t know what has happened in the horse racing industry. Seeing Eight Belles go down last year in the Derby and then another favorite Stormalory today, I am at odds. I absolutely hate to see these beautiful creatures have to be euthanized. It just seems to be happening so much in the last few years.
What is the problem? I don’t know.
Check out the following:
http://www.chef-de-race.com/articles/evolution_of_bloodlines.htm
as well as the parent page. Some really good info on the breeding and some more fodder for rationalizing Derby betting choices.
That is my take on it as well.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
DeCourcy is one of my favorite national writers....
i do not always agree with him, but i respect his opinion. He seems to have a more even handed view of the big blue – not totally in awe but not a hater.
what makes PP’s situation tougher, is that he could actually improve his value in Cal’s offense – as DeCourcy states – but fall in draft status due to next year being a deeper draft – my opinion.
in the end, i am thinking (hoping?) that with meeks most likely coming back, Orton (and maybe Wall) saying they want to play with him, the patterson family being exceptional, and PP loving college – he will be back. if i am wrong, i will pray he does go in the top 20, if not 15, and will follow his development more than any other UK player i have ever followed.

I liked this comment best
Under “Players you’ve never heard of(with good reason)”
1. Kareem Cooper, center, UTEP. Not all 7-foot Kareems are created equal.
I guess I’m of the opinion that Pat has more to gain from coming back if he is considered a tweener in a not so deep draft already. The fact that we’ll be deeper and he may have fewer minutes doesn’t bother me at all. Had I not seen how well it worked out for all the 1996 players, I might think differently.
My thought on Wall
i think he want to come to UK – however, he wants to see if both meeks and patterson return. if they do return, he comes. If not, he goes to duke.
all this UN Central is to kill time while PP and Meeks decide.
but what do i know…..
only one rule in my house - uk has to be your favorite college bball team
Good read.
My thought as well. He wants an NC in his one year. He is betting on UK or Duke.
Changing how you think will change what you think.
Won the 7th race ...
… which was my first of the day.
Going for 2 in a row.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
So far I have won
every race that I placed a bet on today too! :-)
Blue, there is no other color to Bleed !!!
By the 7th race.....
I am usually blinded by Bourbon, lost my program and chasing skirts.
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
Isn't the track just the best
Casino’s are nothing but wheelchairs, oxygen bottles and smoke.
The track is a bunch of fine women in bad hats.
An absolute must at the track is a good pair of shades....
if you get my drift…;-)
Slower Traffic Keep Right!
Did anyone noticeTru's twitter widget after the 7th race?
winner winner chicken dinner …..that was so funny…..if you didn’t see it just scroll up from here….. :-)

What is so funny is
Everything on it……. has been that he has posted the morning news or or a new post of some type. When I saw what it said, it just looked so funny, and I actually had to take a second look, because every tweet had been pertaining to posting something on ASoB.
I guess we can conclude that someone is having a very , very good time…lol

The Jackson Magnet
What would it take to attract John Calipari, Bruce Pearl, Josh Pastner, John Pelphrey and Buzz Williams to Memphis in May? Answer: Joe Jackson — another chapter in “Basketball As Business”.
Good find WW
Parrish gets a little repetitive sometimes but at least you’d have to be running at 10% mental energy to get what he was talking about. Sad Cali has to miss the KY Derby. Think of all the fine ladies in bad hats that would just “love” to say HI!! to him while wearing his killer black out shades. :)
Probably better that he goes to a gym to impress some kid rather than end up in an extortion conspiracy later on.
Memphis, Tenken ya’ll going to the clinic? Hell, I’m just over an hour away, if I had the dough I’d go. I can’t play ball, don’t coach and neither of my girls are playing this year, but just to show up decked out in UK garb, like some badass Jedi master or something and see the raised eyebrows of the other folks as they murmer under their breath, “How do they manage to be EVERYWHERE?” would be suh-weeeet.
I FOUND JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He was in my trunk when I got back from Tijuana.
will not be attending
With 3 children, this is the first saturday that we have had no lacrosse, no soccer, no track, no anything since February – so will be enjoying a day at home.
I do live in the white station school district and my church does hold a summer camp for the white station football and basketball teams over the summer – guess i need to volunteer and wear the blue :)
At least, i need to go to the bball games this fall – just not sure i am ready to sport the blue and white in that venue…..or should i say, i am not sure memphis is ready for me to. i did run into a kid (early 20’s – which is unfortunately now a kid to me) in a bar of a restaurant the other night wearing his UK blue – told him i was proud of him. but of course, he was sort of looking for a fight….
Joe Jackson is one of the few memphis products that Cal has tried to get – whether it was for memphis or is for uk.
it is a shame Cal had to miss his first Derby for this event – hope Jackson is worth it….

take a break
i have two girls. any downtime is a good time. plus it will give you a good reason to cave day it and watch the Derby on ESPN. if you are getting all the rain we are it looks like a cave day will be just what the doctor ordered. :)
maybe you should start small with the UK paraphenailia. maybe some sandals first. then work a hat into the attire next. by the time basketball season starts you’ll be decked out and easy to spot for drive-by’s. ha ha ha ha!
i thought living in Arkansas was tough, but I gotta feel for you on this one. that is a basketball town. tough “I will CUT YOU” regionalism support too. Might take a couple o good wins by Pastner before you fans in Memphis can wear your colors at full speed in public.
guess we’ll see be hearing more about JJ as sand sifts softly through the hourglass.

not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car.
Coach Cal saying
He flew back in last night to Lexington, and was going to attend some Derby Eve parties and he would be going to his first Kentucky Derby. By said, I mean he tweeted. :-)
And there was a link the other day about Rich Brooks and Twitter, how he wasn’t the type. UK AA must have saw differently. As of yesterday, I am following him on Twitter and Joker Phillips. Joker is in LA and his tweet read, a boy from Franklin in Hollywood? Twitter is a lot of fun to keep up with these guys. It seems Coach Cal has a very good sense of humor.
Coach Cal is still wanting 20,000 as of now, he is 4 short of 15,000.
Blue, there is no other color to Bleed !!!
NICE!!! Cali gets to go to Louisville
and have a player’s day at the track. Actually, he probably wishes he was getting a player’s day. He’s going to have to gladhand with a ton of folks, tell em the team will be a work in progress next year and that he’s trying to get some high grade kids on the rosters forthcoming.
Party tonite!!! Drugs and alcohol!!! Don’t touch it!!
you know a2, i am having a hard time with this tweeter thing. i have a myspace account i rarely log onto, a facebook account that sees activity about 2x a week while this blog takes up the majority of my online time. i’m going to put forth a good faith effort this weekend to sign up for it. :)
thanks for the update!

Oh, I have said,
who wants to know what I am doing? Who really cares. But with all the coaches starting to tweet, it is a lot of fun to see what they are saying. It is tuning out to be a lot of fun in that regard. And since we are here a lot, all you have to do is click on Tru’s Twitter widget, at the bottom on the actual twitter logo, and it opens a new page and start to signing in and checking to see what THEY are doing. :-)
Blue, there is no other color to Bleed !!!
right on....
not too difficult when you put it that way :) especially if you don’t worry about trying to keep up with twitting about yourself. do they archive twits?

Bat Cats Score 6, Take Lead
UK trailing Vols 3-0 batting in bottom of 7th and score 6 to lead 6-3 after 7.
Kentucky Oaks coverage
It was great on the local channel WHAS-3. I loved all the pink for the Susan Komen breast cancer foundation. I had a maternal grandmother who survived early, and then 2 maternal aunts who have survived in the last 8 years. It meant a lot to me to see all the pink in the stands and elsewhere on the grounds supporting the fight. Hey, even saw a guy with pink trousers with marlins. Kudos to him!
Cats Beat Vols
James Paxton goes 8, 11 K’s, Branden Kapteyn gets save as UK wins first game of series 6-4 over UT. Chad Wright key 3 run double in 6-run 6th.
Wall Skips NCC Visit
This young man is more mercurial off the court than on — and that’s saying much. Well, I do agree with his excuse.
Surprise class???
Needs to get his schedule in order, standing up any school is pretty disrespectful.
The Spork, I'm two things in one.
Sure, to study for the SAT's
is great, but the whole idea (here I go again) of his adding another school to visit, not to his list, was under the pretense that NC Central’s visit was for a long time friend. Right guys? So another fake screen, but now, looks like there is no problem with saying you are going to do something for a long time friend, and then not doing it? Help me understand this circus, Please !! :-)
