Not surprised at all......
….. but it still sucks and I was hoping it wouldn’t happen.
Let’s hope Cousins can get qualified and Pilgrim is as good as advertised. We’re gonna need them both to contribute immediately from day 1.

if this is all about playing time
then orton is being foolish. He is the only true center on the current roster, and he compliments patterson much better than cousins. From what i know about him, Cousins is much more of a 3/4 hybrid than a 4/5. Orton is a straight 5, and patterson is a straight 4.
At the same time, he’s a great kid and has had a difficult year, so I’ll be cheering for him no matter where he goes…unless he’s playing uk

Orton is not a "true" center.
He is better facing the basket and further out on the floor. His game is more short to midrange jumpers and moving to the basket off the dribble. He can also shoot the three and lead the break, which impressed me most about him. He could really handle the ball well in traffic for a big man.

We Rarely Did That In The 1990's
And when we did, usually Duke, UNC, or Kansas won out.

Much Better Than The 90's
Marvin Stone picked UK over UNC in 1999.
Keith Bogans picked UK over ACC schools like UNC and Duke among others in 1999.
Jason Parker picked UK over UNC in 2000.
Chuck Hayes picked UK over Kansas in 2001.
Kelenna Azuibuike (2002) and Shagari Alleyne (2003) picked UK over UNC (among several others).
Randolph Morris (2004) picked UK over North Carolina among others.
Jared Carter (2005) picked UK over North Carolina among others.
Patrick Patterson (2007) picked UK over Duke among others.
Jon Hood (2009) picked UK over Duke among others.

Music to my ears
I hate to quibble but if memory serves me correct Parker picked UNC but there was an academic issue and he was released. Then Sandy Bell reviewed the transcripts and found that he was actually eligible thus he went to UK. Do I remember that correctly?

by SevenRings on Apr 8, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You Do
Parker took some AP courses in HS that would get “extra credit” per NCAA rules.
UNC botched those calculations. Parker was actually eligible to attend and play for UNC coming out of HS in 1999 if the Tar Heels did the calcs the right (NCAA) way.

Good Catch
Beat me to it, SevenRings. Indeed, UK was bridesmaid to Heels for Parker. Just looking over that list — and assuming it is accurate — I bet those schools are elated that they lost the recruiting contests, such as they were, to UK. How on earth UNC survived without Marvin Stone, Shagari Alleyne, Randolph Morris and, most amazing, the highly productive Jared Carter, is truly astonishing.

Morris' Only Drawback
Is who signed him at UK.
Except for that, Morris would be regarded as a solid All-SEC (junior year) player who made the NBA.
by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 8, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That Comment Deserves Another (Few)
First, it is accurate. Check Rivals or any other source you prefer.
Second, Bogans – Stone – Hayes – Azubuike – Morris – Patterson. Why wouldn’t UNC or Duke have been please to land any of those recruits?
Third, Jared Carter “camped” at Roy Williams’ summer camps. Williams sincerely wanted him, both at Kansas AND North Carolina. Carter would have been much better developed by Roy W than Billy G. Even Calipari has made favorable remarks about how surprisingly good Carter is (based on practices).
Parker chose UNC over UK in 1999 but UK landed him over UNC in 2000. Once UNC learned they had erred in calculating his eligibility, they wanted him badly.

And The Coach You Love To Hate
Landed Royce White this year over schools like UNC and Kansas. Plus Devoe Joseph over Kansas last year, too.

Isn't is kind of ironic
that Tubby’s downfall at UK the last couple of years was his recruiting. But in his first 2 years at MN, he has put together 2 very solid classes.

Problem with the 90's??
Maybe UK didn’t compete with UNC,Duke, ect. when it came to recruiting (your words not mine since I think UK did pretty well duing that decade in the recruiting dept.) but the success of the program during that time (2 NC’s,1 Runner-up, 4 FF’s) says UK competed very well in the most important area and that is winning. Seems like you don’t want to give a certain former UK coach credit where credit is due.
by maysvilleblue on Apr 8, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I Have NO Problem With 90's Recruiting
But UK rarely beat out UNC, Duke, or Kansas for the 90’s recruits.
UK recruiting in the 90’s was superb. But Duke, KU, and UNC got the recruits they wanted.
by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 8, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So that must mean...
that certain former coach did more with less making his time here look even better : )
by maysvilleblue on Apr 9, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No
My point is simply this. UK signed plenty of talent in the 1990’s. Most of those recruits were not heavily sought by UNC, Duke, Kansas, etc.
When UK competed with those 3 schools, the recruit usually went to one of those 3 instead of UK.

He is scheduled to play in Louisville this weekend.
Do you think he wants to head to UK country just a few days after de-committing? I sure wouldn’t want to subject my 18-year-old to that. If he does de-commit, it won’t be official until after the Derby Classic.

Nolan Dennis
As others have said, he is has asked out of LOI at Memphis and his mom says she thinks he likes UK. This guy sort of flies under the radar when you hear the names of Cousins, Henry and Wall but Dennis is for real. He is a Top 50 recruit. At 6’5" 185 pounds he can slash, shoot and will only get stronger. He could be a huge plus for UK because of the guys mentioned, he is more than likely at least a 3 year player. Keep your eye on this guy.

Agree.
I like all these top 5 guys we’re looking at, but in order to build a consistent team there have to be some glue players that stick around at least 2 or 3 years. Dennis could be that type of player.
Scout says he is weak from 3, but they said that about Jodie when he was being recruited, correct?

in Cals system – I think … also Orton coming off knee surgery is a concern …. would think it would be better for him to work his way in slowly like 18 minutes – and when Cousins departs – he would be the cornerstone.

Folks we are now on the never ending
carousel that is a coaching change. We will be hearing this stuff until every recruit is signed and cleared and passes his first semester’s classes. Any way you look at it we are right now better than we have been in 5 years. Think about it…..worst case scenario…..we get a new point guard ( even if its Bledsoe, he’s the #67 player in the nation), we get some MASSIVE help down inside……we get a coach that can handle whatever comes up, and we are PROBABLY going to get Meeks and Patterson back….(I just cant see them doing that well in the draft yet). This team will be the Beast in the East once again….and I dont see the SEC West producing much next year.

I just dont see Patterson 1st round…..AHEAD of Hansborough….seems like a stretch to me….I know Patterson would have a better upside at some point….but now? The Meeks draft I can see, but I dont see him taking a second round slot. Just cant believe they wouldnt both be lottery picks after another year, allowing for the other players that potentially come out.

Most people aren't high on Hansborough as a pro
Look at Kevin Love. Everyone loved his “motor” and his work ethic… and now he struggles for 9 points per game.
Hansborough is a great college player, but does not translate well to the next level. Patterson would definitely go in front of him.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
by chirop1 on Apr 8, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, all the mock drafts I have seen have
Patterson ahead of Hansborough. Patterson tends to fall anywhere from low 20s to low teens (I think 13 is the highest I’ve seen him) and Hansborough is usually very close to the end of the first round.

Probably...but I'm hard pressed to come up with reasons.
I can only think of one real area where one outplays the other…that is consistent in your face 12 foot shooting. Hansborough wins hands down. Maybe Patterson can do it, but Hansborough has proven he can.
I think they are equal in almost every other category. Both are tough, strong, good citizens (I think), smart (I think), average to good jumping (maybe Patterson is better slightly), both can run the floor, both play good defense.

Unfortuneately a long international trip...really long.
But I still found time to watch the Cards lose on my Sling Box…I figured their guard play would catch up to them. I still say one of Pitino’s greatest coaching accomplishments were getting those four guards playing as well as they possibly could, though.

He'll get destroyed in the pros
Garnett would eat his lunch. Chuck Hayes will have him seeing stars. Ming would laugh at him. He could probably try to guard Noah for a while. Prince would steal the ball and dunk on him. The list is endless. He does have a great work ethic.

Potential
The draft is about potential and Pat has far more room for his game to grow than Hansb. Tyler is as good as he will ever be at his size. If Meeks were to leave this year he could very well be a second rounder. I think it would be less likely if he were to stay another season. Only first rounders are guarenteed a contract.

Meeks
Mock draft are worthless especially involving trades but Meeks to the Pistons would rock. They dont really need him though. They are stocked at both backcourt positions and he would likely not find much pt ahead of Rip or Afflalo. I think Meeks would bring more offense than Afflalo but Afflalo is by far the better defender and the Pistons really prize defense.

Story
Here’s the story straight from Larry Vaught who has a good relationship with Larry Orton. I heard him being interviewed by Dick Gabriel on the way home.
Days after G was fired Larry Orton called UK but Mitch wouldnt return his call so he spoke to Sandy Bell. The Orton’s asked to be let out of the LOI at that time. Since Mitch was unavailable and UK had not yet hired Cal Bell asked the Ortons to be patient and wait until they spoke with the new coach before requesting a release and if they still didnt want to come at that time UK would release him. So the Ortons waited. According to Larry Orton they havent said another word about it and only learned about the Cousins commit last night. When Vaught spoke to Mr. Orton Mr. Orton was unaware that Daniel had spoken to Evans. Larry Orton called Daniel then called Vaught back after speaking to his son. Larry said that Evans didnt get it straight from Daniel what happened and that they still were committed but wanted to talk to Cal more and find out how he plans to use both players. So thats the story. No decommit and Orton is still playing this weekend.
