Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Evening Newspaper for April 30th

(via kyducks) I gave some blood today.

Busy day.  That says it all.

But now that I have a few minutes, the news for today is recruiting.  Calipari has been hard after the recruiting trail, some of the results of which you can find linked below.  But Calipari has also been on the trail of Dominique Ferguson, if not quite as hard as you might expect.  Ferguson is a bit more nonplussed at the coaching change than most of the other players, so it seems Coach Cal has a ways yet to go.

Doron Lamb is another Oak Hill product who has been apparently offered a scholarship by Kentucky very recently.  Lamb is a 6'4" swing player who can really put the ball into the basket, both from behind the arc and off the bounce.

Calipari is also very hard after Harrison Barnes, and apparently he is moving into a pitched recruiting battle with Bill Self of Kansas.  Barnes has just been elevated to the #1 player in the class of 2010 by Scout and #4 by Rivals.

And now, for the news.

Stephenson Contacts Cats

Lance Stephenson or at least a member of his entourage — perhaps that’s a clue — contacted UK after Xavier Henry chooses KU.

He was interested in UK last summer but I didn't hear much more after that.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

This is one of the best playoff series I've ever seen.

The number of huge shots from both teams is just off the charts. It’s amazing!

As good as Big Baby and Noah were in the SEC and how they are currently playing in the NBA,

I was trying to envision PP playing on either of these two teams. IMO, if Patterson goes to the NBA, he will be more like Bill Walker (Celtics). Too slow to play gurad, lacking the dribbling skills to play SF and giving up 40 lbs to most PF and C. Yes he is heavier than Noah, but not as tall or as quick a jumper as Noah. I believe he must stay in college until he develops a true outside shot and a consistent 3 point shot, he will have trouble in the NBA.

This is not to say that Patrick is not without strength or talent, but throughout highschool and college that level of strength and talent have gotten him a long way. I did think though that the big boy from Notre Dame seemed to handle PP’s game pretty well. I don’t think Luke will have that big of a career in the pros. Just size and not able to move like the pro PF/ Cs do.

Now...

he is saying he is going to do it Monday. I’ll be surprised if he does, this guy probably has a hard enough time figuring out which cereal to have for breakfast. NCC is just a free trip, no way that even makes his list of 10.

Crazy isn't my word of choice here.....

I have thought about this long and hard and therefore, it is not frustration talking. I, for one, wish that John Wall would take UK off his list. This whole situation is ridiculous. If this kid can only keep adding to his list, after consideration of going to college for at least two years or so, I do not think UK is the right fit for him. Furthermore, I do not believe he fits UK. WE know what fits and what doesn’t. Remember? This whole nonsense of 6,7,8 and now what, 10? The list should not be going up. This is where I have to say, ENOUGH ALREADY…
If he doesn’t know he wants to be part of this great tradition by now, we will be just fine the way things are. If he wanted to honor this feeling of being a KY Wildcat, we would embrace him for it. Others have wanted to feel the excitement of being a Wildcat and still, others will come to feel it too. Fans who embrace their teams and cheer for them as if they were their own children. And we will always continue to do so.
We know he is a one-and-done. That’s fine. It might help with future UK recruiting, but I for one, am over this roller-coaster ride. Enough is enough for this Blue-to-the-core fan. Wall needs to just-do-it already. This is obviously not where he wants to play ball, or he would have felt the excitement by now… :-)

I...

agree with everything, sick of this whole situation. I just threw the number 10 out there, it may still be 8, I’m not sure. Him taking every visit he can just to get the free trips is pretty silly and is kind of disrespectful if you ask me. I still think he lands at UK, but I honestly wouldn’t care either way now.
It’s like me running around with my shirt off at every super model’s photo shoot, knowing which one I will pick to take home. It’s just mean.

a2 - i am pretty much in agreement with you

i say the one thing i have learned is that in addition to the school and the coach, it is the players that will be here that have an impact. maybe i am naive – or dense – but i guess i assumed it was the coach and the school that mattered. what i have really begun to realize is that these players all talk – from the current players to the current recruits. clearly they are more tied in that i ever imagined.

as i result, i believe the roller coster surrounding meeks and pp (though admitedly much less up and down than the wall roller coster) has an impact beyond them.

memphis,

just to clarify, help me here. You have realized they talk with the recruits or that they ALL talk TALK? Sorry, that one keeps flying past my head. I like to listen and want to be informed. :-)

Blue, there is no other color to Bleed !!!

by a2d2 on May 1, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

i know you were talking about wall

but i believe that PP and meeks talk with Orton, Wall, etal.

in fact, the press has quoted orton as texting with PP about wanting to play with him next year.

my point was that (and this is only my opinion) wall – while bringing some of the criticism on himself by not deciding – clearly does not / cannot/willnot decide until he knows if PP and/or meeks are back.

given they are probably sending him mixed signals because they do not know yet what they are doing, he is left to take his free visits and has to twist in the wind a bit. i am sure he gets tired of saying he has not decided, but he cannot say “i will be at uk if pp and meeks stay” and then go to duke if they leave.

a2.....ya gotta think a little bit here

this is a kid that is being pulled in a LOT of directions….he is NOT from KENTUCKY….he only knows what he is being told, and that story gets hacked at by every other coach and recruiter out there that doesnt have a big UK across their chest. Can you name for me the last #1 recruit that came to Kentucky?

This kid has MILLIONS at stake here. LITERALLY. Everything around this situation is in flux….he does not know who he will be playing with yet, because we dont know yet who will be here, and he has 15 “uncles” and “advisors” in his ear everyday…and the coach that recruited him the most just pulled up stakes and left the university that he told him was going to be his best fit for the last three years.

Let this play out….let the young man make the last major choice concerning his career on his own time, because after this, the lawyers, agents, teams, and league are going to dictate this young man’s future. He seems to be a decent enough kid who has been thrown to the wolves so to speak.

Let’s be patient….if he doesnt sign here, you can spend the rest of the summer raking him over the coals for making us wait….but until he has a decision in hand, let’s not be too fast to judge.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on May 1, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Now ABC,

I had considered all the whispering in his ears. And without a doubt, he is a great player. I would love to have him join our team. Really. That could be fun basketball to see. And I knew deep down, there are things going on, we should know nothing about. I understand other things have to be decided. I get that totally. Sometimes we fans are, "Smarter than the average bear. " I just had an opinion, and I stated it. I will gladly welcome him to the Wildcat family. So we can say, he is taking this one for the team.

I get his needing to wait

to see what happens here first. But does he have to continue to add to his list??. NO. He could easily wait to see with 3 names. Why make this circus worse than it already is?

The school that he added was in North Carolina

it is an all-black school, which has received a lot of publicity this week for him coming to visit…..I would not be surprised if it turns out that he did this as a favor to a family member or friend. His name brings a lot of exposure to any program….it is not any concern for a serious contender.

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on May 1, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Guys, there's always more to a story...

Wall is visiting that school because the coach there is a longtime friend of his. It’s his way of saying thank you to him for helping him out his whole life. He’s not just doing it for the publicity…although that is a factor.

Wall loves the media attention. Honestly, I don’t have a problem with it, even if as a fan it’s making me a little crazy.

D2 Program

no way he is actually going there.

Everyone relax.

I think this kid has his mind made up already but for various reasons is waiting to make any commit public. Just my opinion.

DEEETROIT BASKETBALLL!!!

by davw83 on May 1, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Here is my point....

Wall has 8 schools on his list + a visit (only) to NC Central. Okay. Fact.
When asked if the rumors were true, that he had trimmed his list to four, he said he had planned to trim his list to 3 or 4 schools by Friday, though it looked like it would be Monday. And “In my mind, the schools are all even.” This is from a updated link Tru posted on 5/1.

Okay now. What is the rationale in keeping his list at 8, visiting a 9th, and keep on postponing a shorter list? That would still keep everyone from a definite answer until he sees who is staying here and who is not. When Monday comes, and still no short list, who benefits? Wouldn’t he eliminate a lot of pressure, if he were to trim his list to 3 or 4, instead of saying that all 8 were EVEN…….. If he loves all the media attention now, do you think that he is waiting for a media slowdown, to bring it back up?

Blue, there is no other color to Bleed !!!

by a2d2 on May 1, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

as long as you keep talking about him, his name will continue to garner hype, whether it be good or bad. what was the old saying? no news is bad news. :)

BTW, even after ol boy makes his “decision” look for more media opportunities for him over the summer to just keep the name/image/brand/soon to be logo? in the mouths of the babes (you and I) all for some fat stacks, sweet peaches and a crib to die for. gotta love the ballers!!!

Doan you worry a2 it’s nothing personal, it’s business. There are a lot of fans out there on pins and needles waiting for a kid to decide where he wants to run around a square chunk of wood while bouncing and throwing an inflated ball around.

Besides that’s what we’re here for, get input from friends like memphis so these long summer days waitng around for the season to begin aren’t too dull.

I FOUND JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you see Wall live and in person then...you can plainly see that

Wall is worth the frustrating wait. Wall does fit in at UK and can be the last piece to a pretty sound team in 09-10.

Hey Tru...

i posted a “Cal’s in the game!” reference in the link to the pictures an hour or so before you or Moss – is there no copyrighting on the internet? :)

you know, i wonder if Cal had this gig set up before he got to UK, did he set it up after he got to UK, OR did UK have it set up for its coach which just so happened to be Cal – wonder if BCG would have done it. Not that it matters, but just got to thinking – it is pretty cool and with the popularity of computer games, it is great publicity…..
