Poll: Who's Best in One on One?

An excerpt from the news conference where Coach Calipari explains (briefly) his offense and how it came about.

Q. I think the fan base has been taking a crash course on the dribble drive. What is it you like about that offense? Will you automatically implement that here or do you look at your personnel?

COACH CALIPARI: We're going to implement it and use whatever portions of it we can use. The dribble drive offense, Vance Walberg came to watch our team's practice at the University of Memphis. He wanted to take some things from our practice. He was a junior college coach. I went to dinner with him, Tell me how you play. He said, You don't want to know. Really, I want to know. We started talking. It was the craziest thing I'd ever seen. We don't set screens unless we're really running something. You know the old game of pass, pass, pass. This is dribble, dribble, dribble. This is your man. This unleashes players. This lets players get to the level they want.

I just told the team, if you cannot play, come and see me because this is not the right program. I can't hide you. You have to be able to put it on the floor and make basketball plays and do things. If you can, you're in heaven. If you can't, it's hard to play you.

Poll
With being able to "beat your man off the dribble" being so important in the DDMO, I want to know who you think is the best at this on our current 08-09 roster.

I Voted Liggins

Based on the South Carolina game that I saw.

Liggins consistently beat his man off the dribble. But he never knew what to do next.

Based on potential...

(YouTube video compilations from his high school days, rare flashes of brilliance, etc.), I’d have to say Liggins.

Based strictly on getting to the basket....

i would say Liggins but if you add in the ability to bury a jumpshot in a defenders face i would give the nod to Meeks. IT ’s always tough to guard a guy who has the ability to raise up and stick the jumper b/c that makes the defender vulnerable to a pumpfake.

Darius...

By the end of the season, it was pretty apparent to me that the only one capable of consistently breaking down the defense and getting into the lane was D-Miller. Now there has been some discussion about BCG having told Jodie to quit shooting, so Miller being the go- to- man may have been a result of this. But even so, Jodie, oftentimes penetrated into the lane only to have the ball stripped. I do agree with wldcatsfreak that as far as the stop and pop over the defenders head from deep goes, Jodie was pretty effective for MOST of the year. All things considered, I gotta go with the freshman.

Just as a follow-up...

Don’t get me wrong, Mr. Meeks is one of the best to ever wear the blue and white. I mean no disservice to Jodie, he is one of the great scorers in Ky history, but Darius just seems to have the knack to find that seem and score.

My vote is Jared Carter..

Too bad he wasn’t a choice…
JK…
Galloway, IMO.

I think its funny...

That our starting point guard has only one measly vote…
…And we are wondering why we didnt make it to the Tourney this year…

Starting PG I Coach's Decision

He liked a back-up SG better than his own 2 PG recruits.

Meeks

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Voted for Darius

While he may not be able to beat any guy on the floor, he’s the best at beating “his man” and doing something productive, which is what matters.

Well

The poll hasn’t closed yet, but I think the voting is just about done.

I’ve got to say that I’m surprised by the late charge that Galloway had to pretty much come in pushing for the lead! I personally voted for Galloway b/c at times it seemed like he was able to just blow past his man and forced someone else to pick him up (or got an easy bucket or dump pass). Darius would have been my second choice. I think that both have great potential for next year. And if (really hoping this doesn’t happen but…) we don’t get Wall, I think Galloway is the best qualified point (or closest thing to a point) that we have to run the DDMO. He’s rough around the edges, but i think that Coach Cal will be able to develop him into quite the guard. You do have to feel for the guy with 4 different head coaches in his collegiate career.

Thanks for voting everybody!
