Around SBN: Why We're Skeptical Of LeBron James

Afternoon Newspaper for April 24th, 2009

[UPDATE 1]

The big news of the morning is that 6'7" JUCO Darnell Dodson has accepted a scholarship offer to the University of Kentucky.  This comes as no real surprise as Dodson was known to have requested his release from Memphis and there were many rumors out there that he would follow Calipari to Kentucky.  Dodson will have three years of eligibility and is rated a 4* small forward by Rivals.com.

Dodson is just the kind of long swing player that you might expect Billy Gillispie to have signed.  Originally a Rivals 3* prospect out of high school and ranked #124 in the class of 2007, Dodson signed with Pittsburgh out of high school by coach Jamie Dixon but left after he could not be cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse and went to Miami Dade Community College.

According to ESPN, Dodson is a good outside shooter with range to 22 feet, who can also slash to the basket.  ESPN ranks him at a 95, which they call an "immediate impact prospect."

Now, for the news.

Star-divide

Kentucky Basketball News

  • I don't know if this guy knows what he is talking about, but if he does, this is big news.  Donovan a "yeller and a screamer?"  Has Calipari truly "laid the college hoops landscape bare" for John Wall?  The Wall watch (isn't that kind of like the door watch?) continues ...
  • Big Blue Links from John Clay.
  • Calipari recently visited Eric Bledsoe.
  • [UPDATE 1]  Jodie Meeks to throw out the first pitch next Tuesday for the 'Cats vs. the Cards.
  • [UPDATE 1]  Matt Jones has a John Wall update.

Kentucky Football News

  • Football is in the air.
  • Lumpkin part of the plan tho fill Pryor's gap.  There is no question that Lumpkin is capable, if he can just stay healthy.
  • Next year's NFL draft should include more 'Cats.  Indeed, and maybe even an early draft pick or two.
  • Follow Coach Cal on Twitter, if you're into that sort of thing.

Other Kentucky Sports News

  • UK Tennis defeats Arkansas in the first round of the SEC tennis tournament.
  • [UPDATE 1]  The Crimson Tide hosts the Bat Cats this weekend.  Kentucky really needs this series in the worst way.

NCAA Sports News

  • Will Jeremy Tyler's jump from high school junior to European pro start an "unsafe" trend?  Eric Crawford thinks so.  Sonny Vaccaro may be a marketing genius, but he is no friend to the kids he catches in his web.
  • [UPDATE 1]  Ater Majok (remember him?) has declared for the NBA draft, despite not playing even a minute at UConn.  Apparently, Majok is the subject of at least one NCAA incident that could affect his eligibility to play in college.
  • [UPDATE 1] Players in the SEC who have declared themselves eligible for the draft.  Hopefully, most come back.

Other News of Interest

  • General Quarters looks perfect for the Kentucky Derby.  The back-story behind this horse is really fascinating.

Coach Cal on Twitter....

He has only been there around 19 hours, and is approaching 5,000 followers. Can Twitter handle the Sea of Blue about to bombard them? Actually, no pun intended there. JL Blue just picked the right name……. :-)

Good Grief

This is worst than a bunch of star struck teenage girls!
He is just a basketball coach who still has ZERO National titles.
Big Deal if he “tweets”

What your mission here..?

You’ve made 4 comments since joining ASOB, and all 4 comments have been back handed slaps at Coach Calipari…

What are you hoping to accomplish..?

whatever

Calipari is the basketball coach at Kentucky. Hence, he’s kind of a big deal. None of our other coaches had titles before coming to UK either.

I just want to see what he can do with the program before he is annoited The King
He is a little “slick” for me. Just being careful guys

Wall guy

There are so many basic spelling and grammar errors in that piece about Wall that I have a hard time believing that guy has any credibility. To wit:

With Ty Lawson headed to the NBA, Williams is left without a point guard near the abilities of Lawson. In 2020 Williams will have explosive point guard, 6′3″ Kendall Marshall of Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Virginia to run his team.

(emphasis mine)

Really? Ole Roy is recruiting a kid for 2020? Why haven’t we heard from the NABC on this? Seriously, if you can’t take the time to do basic proof reading and get the small stuff right why should I believe you on the big stuff?

Also a link: Joe Posnanski, at the end of his Banny Log reprints a column he wrote about former Morehead St head coach Dick Fick. I’m sure there are some people here who knew Fick and even for those who didn’t (like myself) it’s a great read. Plus, Joe Posnanski is the best sportswriter in America The World. This is indisputable. It is a fact.

I like important stuff just as much as the next guy, but please, for a little while, deliver us from meaning, baseball. That's your greatest glory, and we thank you for it very, very much. -- Craig Calcaterra

Twitter

So im following Cal on Twitter. He is in Mass. right now for a clinic and having lunch with his daughter who’s a senior there. There is some cool info like he will be back in town Sat. for individual workouts but I gotta say I feel a little stalkerish. Wierd.

Stalking?

Yeah, you really should seek help for all the problems that you have. : )

Oh, and I’m pretty sure you know, but that is total joke based on your debate from the other day. ; )

I think it is cool too.....

Stalking? NO…..we are not sneaking a peek….Although, I doubt if it is actually him…What do you think? He said on April 1st, he didn’t read blogs and was not an internet watcher…maybe not exact words there… :-)

And it is very cool if it is him actually Twittering…. Now all we need to accomplish for now, is have someone give him the idea, that he should be reading ASoB… :-)
And my spell check excepted twittering. ?? lol

Do these famous types do their own tweeting?

Or do they have an executive assistant that handles this sort of thing?

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Apr 24, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Just a guess here...

..but I’m going with an executive assistant. Really, do you think Coach has the time, and I actually hope he doesn’t — to twitter?

Hmm. Color me one who is skeptical about him managing his own twitter account.

by BigSkyCat on Apr 24, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

have you noticed that sometimes..........

things lose meaning, during blogging or IMing? :-)

I know that it is for him. But do you actually think that he is doing the twittering?

I wonder...

…if Twitter is allowing coaches to make an end-run around the NCAA’s ban on text-messaging with recruits. With Twitter, the recruits can sign up to ‘follow’ the coach, and they will then receive the coach’s ‘tweets’ as text messages. I’m sure the coaches are aware of the audience that’s receiving their tweets.

by Mahatma on Apr 24, 2009 3:23 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah,

I think that’s interesting too.

Some of you may have seen it, but a few weeks ago Pete Carroll was on ESPN First Take and he was talking about Twitter and how he (Carroll) was trying to "recruit" Will Ferrell (you know, because Ferrell is an avid USC fan) to join Twitter. Well, to make a long story short, the ESPN host, Jay Crawford, asked him point blank about whether or not he (Carroll) used his Twitter account in his actual recruiting trails. Obviously, Carroll brushed it off and said (paraphrasing here, of course) "No, no, of course not, we just do this for fun", and then he also noted that part of the success to Twitter was keeping "young people" around to help out with the process.

I do realize NCAA football and NCAA basketball have different rules, but it is interesting to think about how the Twitter phenomenon will be used by these coaches. I suppose we will have to wait and see what comes of it, if anything, in the future.

Oh, and if you are totally bored and want to read yet another article about Twitter, and since it apparently was Tom Crean who turned our very own Coach Calipari on to Twitter, here is another link (second paragraph of the article) that I found that talks a bit about Crean and his interest in Twitter.

by BigSkyCat on Apr 24, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

It is interesting.

I suppose you could say that its public access much like seeing the coach on TV.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Apr 24, 2009 3:37 PM EDT reply actions

True...

and if they want to ban the tweets, they can ban the American Express recruiting videos…er, ads while they’re at it.

Darnell Dodson etc.

Happy to see another coach Cal guy get on board. Also happy to see that we offered Bledsoe a scholly. … two question come to mind though
1) obviously someone currently on scholarship will be at another school next year … who will that be Harrelson?, Stewart?, .. and should we release them now so they could get on with another team? ??
2)Is Bledsoe willing to play second fiddle to Wall? (I think it would be awesome to have both) ….

by ukcris on Apr 24, 2009 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

Bledsoe was offered a scholarship?

The link above did not indicate that Bledsoe was offered a scholarship, link indicated possible grade issues-possible 5th year prep school. Is there scholarship news to the contrary?

by blue oregon on Apr 24, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Bledsoe

Got this one from KSR …
It does say that he is waiting on his latest ACT score … but it says he has been offered by UK…

UK has offered Eric Bledsoe a Scholarship

Billy G

I just want to say that I was able to meet Billy G at Keeneland the other day and it was AWESOME. He signed my program and took pictures with us. He ended up at the same place we went to afterward so we got to talk a little there as well. I could not have been more excited or happier!!
