Uk has offered Eric Bledsoe. What does this mean??

Towards the bottom of the page and appearently from Eric himself.

Link here

So UK has offered Bledsoe. And Dodson has inked his name to a scholarship. By my count that would put us 2 over of scholarships, 3 if we get Wall.

What are the implecations here?

Have we given up on Wall? I would say hell no.

Are we losing the Orton commit? The young man and father have both said no.

So does this mean Cal is expecting to cut 3 current players? My magic eight ball says 'duh'.

Thoughts?? Feelings??? Emotions???? Headaches?????

It's one or the other, I think.

They’re both top-ranked point guards, so there’s no way both would want to come to UK. They would have to compete for playing time. So we won’t get both.

I see 3 possible scenarious – (1) UK gets Wall, but not Bledsoe; (2) UK gets Bledsoe, but not Wall; (3) UK gets neither.

I have no clue, and neither does anyone else on here, which of these will transpire. But all of the scouting sites I’ve looked at indicate that Bledsoe is leaning heavily toward UF, and Wall’s list still hasn’t been slimmed down. He’s apparently still looking at Baylor (probably not, if Nolan Dennis heads there which seems imminent), Duke, KU, UK, Memphis, Miami, UNC, and N.C. State.

Non-qualifier

IMHO Bledsoe will likely not qualify this year, so, by OFFERING him a scholarship he can commit to us and then go to a prep for a year before SIGNING with us. Wall can still come for a year and Bledsoe would take over in 2010. It would be the ultimate WIN-WIN for both!

He has ...

… one non-qualifying score, and he’ll be retaking the test to try to get a qualifier.

The one thing that bugs me

Coach Cal has stated that he will have discussions with the players as to their fit in the system and program next year. I am paraphrasing but he has basically said some will choose to go other may want to stay knowing that they will not get playing time. He has said he will honor the requests of those that choose to stay. But is that the case now? Obviously it is not. If everyone declairs they will stay no matter the amount of playing time they will recieve, coach Cal really honors his statement and Pat and Jodie return; then we are offically over our scholarship limit.

Yes these things tend to work out. And yes those are two big if (pat and jodie returning and no one choosing to go), but by accepting the Dodson scholarship we have just made a statement to the players, yes you all may want to come back, but I will force one of you to leave.

Yes I bringing up issues that may not happen and most people like the lets wait and see answer. But it’s Friday. I’m bored at work.

What’s your thoughts on this situation? Do you approve of that type of statement from Coach? I personally love coach and am excited as hell about the future of our program, but at the expense of forcing guys off the team? Paint me on the fence.

Its a little bit of a gamble but one he has to take.

The likely hood that everyone wants to stay regardless of PT plus Jodie and Meeks returning is not very high. He didn’t get to where he is today without taking some risks.

But lets say for arguments sake that your scenario plays out, everyone wants to return including some of our returning slower bigs who he’s told won’t see a minute of floor time. Then I think he might ask the team for two “volunteers” to walk on for one year. Maybe he gets two that way, maybe just Miller (who’d have to pay in-state tuition), maybe none and maybe I’m an idiot and he’d never make such an appeal.

Finally, if he has to pull two guys scollys and say "walk (either ‘on’ or ‘away’) then so be it. BBN won’t lynch him for it, not this year.

Its not that high of a risk and the reward of getting a top tier PG is worth it.

Honesty hurts

I think Cal will be truthful with these guys about their playing time. If I was a player like Stewart or Harellson and had 2-3 yrs of eligibility left and knew I wasnt going to play I would go. Who would stay to sit the bench if you could contribute to a D-1 team unless maybe you were a Kentucky boy. I think some of these guys will leave of their own accord after having sit downs with the coach.

There's something else to this

as well, by letting the players decide for themselves to stay or go, it gives them the control over their own destiny, assuming they have the ability to play in Cal’s system. I have said before, that I don’t see how Harrelson, Stewart, Harris, or ANY of the walk-ons could play in this type of system, but that still remains to be seen. And I still think that Cal believes Patterson may be not long for this team. All of these kids declaring of late MAY have an effect on his draft position, but maybe not. I honestly believe that we will see 4-5 more scholarship players leave before this is all over, either by draft or choice.

Let's also not forget the magic R

word….could anyone see a couple of guys redshirt next year??? Give themselves time to learn this system and see if they can play in it…..

Redshirts ...

… don’t solve our scholarship crunch.

I msunderstood the terms of a redshirt

is there a difference in a medical redshirt and just redshirting?

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

Nope

One you can get because you’re hurt, and the other you get just because.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Apr 28, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Dav is correct

Taking a redshirt doesn’t save you a scholarship… it just eats one up for an extra year down the road.

Similarly, you can’t “take a walk on season for one year.” Once you go off scholarship, that’s it. No going back.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Liggins?

No one’s mentioned DeAndre Liggins. If one reads the individual workout report, couple that with other comments and previously known facts it seems to me that his status is in question. End of semester will divulge much about all the non-seniors.
