Maggard Reporting: Henry's Will Commit To Kansas

http://www.truebluekentucky.com/index.php/basketball/926-guest-basketball/1101-xavier-henry-and-cj-henry-will-commit-to-kansas.html

This really sucks if it is true, but I for one am going to wait until they sign on the dotted line to believe it. Also, Marc Maggard once reported that Billy Donovan was a "done deal" as UK's new coach so maybe take this with a grain of salt. Well we'll see how this all shakes out, but I think we will be fine especially if Jodie returns.

well

Nolan Dennis is still out there…if this report (???) is true…I am assuming he would stay a little longer than X…but again…why go through all these motions (yes coming to visit..no not coming to visit…yes coming to visit…yes want to play for Calipari…no want to play for Mom’s alma mater)…hmmm…makes me wonder that Maggard may be sniffing around the wrong compost heap….could have made the decision as soon as Cal left for UK then…makes no sense…if it’s true…oh well…get JWALL and Nolan Dennis…good to go

Henry's

I never expected to land them, so I won’t be disappointed when they go to Kansas.

All I’m really interested in is John Wall and a back-up for Jodie who can step in and play as a sophomore.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Let's not be too fast there gang

there has been a lot of negativity spewing out of Kansas about these young men….how Kansas fans are so fed up with the waiting….how they could care less if they got them or not….maybe that will turn these guys off about Kansas….I think they could be a real asset if we can get them….I won’t panic either way, but let’s not be too quick to turn negative on them. This class REALLY has the potential to be special…..perhaps the most special of all time. we have a great class right now….but this could be the most important thing to hit us in a one year period in a very long time…..let’s not pull the plug yet…..I have witnessed too much of the Maggard shoot first ask questions later mentality…he is wrong as much as he is right.

You know what the best part of

this is dont all of you???

We have OPTIONS……we have three or four guys to look at for each position now instead of taking whomever we can convince to come here……that’s the difference in BCG and JC…..the BIG difference…..we got guys fighting to get in the arena now

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on Apr 22, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

Do we?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about the Calipari Kool Aid too… but I remember comments just like this one two years ago except it sounded like this:

that’s the difference in BCG and Tubby…..the BIG difference…..we got guys fighting to get in the arena now

I agree that our recruiting is significantly improved, but I wouldn’t say that anyone is fighting to get in here just yet. We are still at the whim of guys like Xavier Henry and John Wall. Coach Calipari has said it himself, we need a couple of years to be KENTUCKY again. In every interview, he talks about how he wants to be regarded in much the same way that Kentucky’s coaches were from 1995-1999.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

I agree.

Cal will do good things, I think, but I’m not going to go too far yet until I see results ON THE COURT.

The thing to remember is that the guys Cal has brought in so far (Cousins, and now Dodson) were already his commits. He couldn’t hold on to Henry, but he did manage to keep Hood and Orton from leaving. Wall is interested in UK now ONLY because of Cal.

What I’m getting at is that Cal has so far had success keeping guys he already had his hooks into interested. One would assume that playing for UK > playing for Memphis in their heads, but who knows. As I, and others, have mentioned many times, these kids are young and Memphis has had much more NCAA tournament sucess of late than has UK. Many don’t know or don’t care about our history, especially those with an NBA focus.

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.

Darnell

Is that confirmed…I cannot find anything that says he has committed…I would hope so…but i really would like us to go get Nolan Dennis…

as for the Henry’s…I read (as did most of you probably) where Xavier’s mom wanted to “stick it to that UFR guy Martin Manley” —a KU blog/sportswriter/fan for claiming that KU would be better off without Xavier and pushing for Lance Stephenson…now that would be really funny if mommy made her kids go to KU just to prove a sportsblogger wrong…I understand the whole being close to home argument (it factored into why I matriculated to a local University rather than Cornell), but the Henry family had planned to move to Memphis to be closer to the boys, so this dragged out decision by Xavier (if he chooses KU) is quite confusing…he could have saved everyone the trouble and committed to KU once coach Cal left Memphis…so there is something below the surface that we are not aware of (especially since he didn’t even bother to visit the UK campus) as to why it took soooooo long to decide…perhaps he enjoyed all of the attention… regardless…i think we are better off this year and subsequent years with Nolan Dennis…go get him Cal

Cal called it

it WILL take a couple of years before kids start “fighting” to get into UK……

and that’s ONLY IF….

we “….see results ON THE COURT.”

I FOUND JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was in my trunk when I got back from Tijuana.

I think that BCG

WAS an improvement in recruiting. I did not agree with all of his commits ( just a BIT too young for me, although I really appreciated the effort to go out and get kids asap), and yeah, I think you have kids lining up at this point. I guess the best way to describe it is this Billy Clyde was better, Coach Cal is the best. I challenge you to find another coach that has had better recruits consistently for the last 5 years.

Save that comment and read it back to me in 5 years and then let me know if I was wrong….for now I am going to enjoy playing at being Nostradamus. I havent been able to have fun like this in a long time.

The Numbers Don't Back That Up > Gillispie Not An Improvement

UK signed Top 20 class in 2003, #1 class in 2004, #1 JuCo player in 2005, Top 15 class in 2006.

UK signed Top 10 class in 2007, Top 15 class in 2008, and Top 15 class in 2009.

The recruiting results under the two coaches was pretty similar. Evidence of that is that the former coach signed Top 15 classes in both 2008 and 2009 for his new team.

Remember something 40

We will never know about most of Gillespie’s recruits….they were too young to get here….AND….he has to get some credit for this year’s class as well…and they have the potential to be a #1 class

5 years not needed...

…Forty is correct on this one, Gillispie NOT an improvement..

As a matter of fact, I’ll go as far to say he was the worst hire since Edie Sutton… IMO

you really think that

NONE of those kids he recruited for the next few years….as well as Hood and Orton don’t buy any credibility??

Remember, we're having fun now!!!

by ALLBLUCAT on Apr 24, 2009 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Dominique Fergusen is about it for the long rangers

Orton was a solid get.

Hood will be a good player for us… but its a sad day if a Kentucky/Louisville coach can’t sign a Mr. Basketball that wants to play in state.

So I’d say that out of Gillispie’s recruiting efforts… Ferguson and Orton are the only valid arguments.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Gillispe Was Touted As Great Recruiter

But he never showed that at UK.

Calipari IS a great recruiter and the difference shows quite clearly.

I...

think a lot of that may have been that he was getting some really good talent to come to schools like UTEP and A&M. Unfortunately, his school’s status change and his recruiting performance weren’t really on the same incline.

The Spork, I'm two things in one.

by the spork on Apr 25, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

UTEP Had The 7th Best W-L (%) In Div I During The 1990's

They must have had some talent (Tim Hardaway, et al).

Melvin Watkins recruited better talent at TAMU than Gillispie.

Gillispie is a good recruiter, not great.

and

apparently Nolan Dennis, after immediately saying that he was really wanting to come to UK after Cal left for the bluegrass, now refuses to field calls from the UK coaching staff… nice…now I am hearing where Darnell Dodson (Matt Jones) was higher on the “pecking order” than Nolan Dennis was…so perhaps the kid didn’t want to be the third fiddle… we may be seeing him when we play UCONN on Dec 9th…interesting indeed…I really hope Kansas gets knocked out in the second round by Texas A&M in next years tournament (first team that came to mind..how weird)

by fincity on Apr 23, 2009 4:27 AM EDT reply actions

Dennis went to

Baylor….and now Dodson seems ready to commit……sounds to me like Coach has it covered

Hood takes Dennis' scholarship

Calipari could have had Dennis at UK if he wanted him.

Patience

So many are all in a lather about Henry’s,Wall,ect.,ect.,ect. Sure I would love to have them for next season but frankly I am looking more at 2010. There will be many holes to fill after next season. My hopes are that Coach Cal is spending more time on this year juniors/next year seniors as far as recruiting. The Wall/Henry sweepstakes only has a one year payoff. Hopefully 2010 will bring in some players who aren’t all “one and doners”.

Too much DRAMA

I don’t like the smell of the Henry kids. It’s like the whole family is focused on themselves, and they’re playing everyone off of each other and enjoying it. Bad for the kids, and it makes one wonder about the character factor in these kids’ upbringing. Talented, sure, but a bag of trouble possibly as well.

We're all just a banana peel away from eternity.

by SD_UK_FAN on Apr 23, 2009 10:03 AM EDT reply actions

Drama

The back and forth has been extremely annoying but all of the interviews I have read and viewed suggests these kids are pretty good kids at heart. They reminded me a lot of the Meeks,Ortons, and Pattersons.

from what i could gather

it was the Mom basically putting her foot down and making the kids stay closer to home… read where Cal told Xavier’s dad that if coming to UK was going to cause problems in the home to just go ahead and commit to KU…my feeling there is that Cal realized perhaps that Xavier was going to be one and done, whereas Dodson would stay longer (as well as whomever he gets next year for the wing position)…have complete faith in Cal and what he needs to do to keep us revved up for the next decade (or two)…get JWALL….
