Roster for 2010-2011 Season

I know we still have questions for this years roster, but looking at the number of open slots we could potentially have for the 10-11 season I'm mind boggled. I’ll pose this just for discussions sake.

Assuming we lose no more seniors (like Porters early retirement) from this year’s team (and from Cal’s comments we won’t) and Patterson stays one more season.

  • For 10-11 we will lose 4 scholarship Seniors (Meeks, Harris, Galloway, Stephenson)
  • We would more than likely lose Patterson to the draft (again assuming he stays for this season)
  • We have Cousins as a potential one and done
  • If we bring in Wall to replace a player currently on scholarship

    • Wall will go one and done
  • If we bring in Henry to replace a player currently on scholarship
    • Could Henry go one and done too? (I'll assume he does for dramatic effect)
  • I’ll assume we retain Orton as well even though if we get Henry that is unlikely

That gives us POTENTIALLY 8 to 7 scholarships opening for the 2010-2011 season.

This would leave only 5 to 6 scholarship players to start that season.

WOW!!! Talk about a young team. Obvious questions:

  • Does the 2010-2011 high school class have that much talent for us to bring in that number of players?
  • Will we go some Juco?
  •  If this happens are we going to set ourselves up for the same thing  4 years later?
  • Will this become a common trend? Assuming we begin to get more one and done players.

also -

Cal was never afraid of only having 11 or 12 scholarship being used….

only one rule in my house - uk has to be your favorite college bball team

That's all possible....

But it’s not probable that you can have that many “one and done” (3) players showcase themselves on a team in one year. That’s one of the downsides to recruiting such players. Personal goals can get in the way of team goals. But, I believe that Cal is one of the few coaches that can pull such a thing off.

As far as seeing more of that in the future, you can pretty much bet you will. And UK will be just fine in the process. If Wall and Henry both come, UK’s second 5 could very easily be ranked on their own merits. Somewhat like the 1995-96 team. Very very very deep.

True

I find it hard to believe we would have 3 one and done in one year. That’s being said is Henery looking to be one and done? I havn’t read any thing to suggest it. But even if he doesn’t that gives us 7 scholarships to fill in 10-11. That’s still seems like an excessive amount.

But you bring that up makes me think. If we get Wall and if Patterson and Meeks return we potentially have 4 players going pro next year. I wonder how that will effect pattersons draft status next year?

Xavier

Is considered a likely one and done. He, Cousins, and Wall are all projected as lottery picks in 2010 so you have to assume that they all are.

by ben-p on Apr 14, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Henry is the #1 SG, Wall is the #1 PG.

Cousins is the #2 C and Orton is #3.

Wall, Henry, and Cousins are all very like one-and-done, though if Wall comes, he would probably be the only for sure.

I can't see ...

… How Cousins could be the #2 center as the #2 overall player. That doesn’t even work by Shelbyville math. :-)

… that the #1 player is a point guard.

If that scenario plays out

And we end up w/ say 8 open scholarships we would have returning:

Darius Miller, Liggins, and Pilgrim as juniors and Orton and Hood going into their sophomore years.

That’s (potentially) not a bad starting 5. And plus Coach Cal can re-load like nobody’s business.

by ben-p on Apr 14, 2009 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

Has anybody heard if CJ Henry can play. He may be a key to getting his brother and then if he is good enough

being the starting PG the following year. If Liggins doesn’t make it academically, that could be a real ace in the hole. If he can play.

Matt Jones

commended on his site that in his opinion, CJ is a very good PG. Personally, I have no idea.

hey guys...

…it’s hard enough keeping up with THIS years class, so lets play the 2009-2010 season, and THEN worry about 2010-2011… lol

A lot of things can/will change between now and then…. (i.e, this past year)

The Cats Lost 6 Players To NBA Lottery Draft And 2 More 4-Yr Starters In 1996 And 97

And still did “OK” in 1998. I’d look for more of that success in the future.

LMAO...

…Yeah, we did “OK” in 1998….

My Point Was

The 1996 team and probably the 1997 team would have easily defeated the 1998 team but each team defeated most of its opponents.

I look for the same or similar in 2010, 11, and 12. The names may be different each year but the results will look familiar.

LOL Forty.....

I recall we did rather well in 1998……OK will work though…..HaHa

I have a jacket embroidered with 1998 National Champions…..and I still wear it… I am not ashamed that is has been that long since we had a national title…sometimes though, I do feel rather strange that I am wearing a jacket that is that old

I love

having this problem, just getting the one and dones is a great start, wondering when the next “okay” season will be is another I don’t mind having. As long as it will all be “okay” in the end.

by yearofthecat on Apr 14, 2009 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

What we may have here

is another “good” problem. Take the three 1 and dones….try keeping what we have….make a run at it all next year…then take a couple of decent ( sweet sixteen-elite 8) years to rebuild…and make another run….we may have to live with being really good every 2-3 years….not only would that be respectable, it would allow coach to fill those gaps with the juco guys in a down year. We can make that work. This year is just a really special class that holds so much potential if we can get them and make all of the pieces fit.

Remember, were having fun now!!!

A really good interpretation

of the 5th Year Senior rule ( at least for us Cats) concerning John Wall

http://www.draftexpress.com/article/NBA-Draft-Roundup-April-15-3182/

IT makes me feel a little better about this year anyway….at least for now….now where is that commitment letter???

What this means...

…is that after we grab the #1 recruiting class this year, it will be followed by yet another #1 recruiting class (-:

Another Chapman in the fold? Please Lord.

Did anyone notice that within 1 minute of addressing the media at his press conference 2 weeks ago that Coach Cal mentioned Rex Chapman’s name out of the clear blue? Chapman has a son named Zeke who is supposed to be a thoroughbred. All-Everything High School player in Arizona. Graduates in 2011. I’m just saying…???

Oakie.myers you lost me when you had Stephenson listed as a UK Senior.

Why write an article when you don’t even know the UK roster?

It is Perry Stevenson.

Heh. Someone (I can’t remember who) got really upset before last season because Tru kept misspelling Harrelson’s name.

Oalie.myers

I don’t think it is trvial when UK fans cannot spell the names of the players in the Program. At least Harrellson with one "L’ is close, Sephenson is not!

You don’t have to “consider yourself spanked”…..however, I have seen hundreds of posts at numerous message boards that spell UK players names incorrectly.

As a fanbase that prides itself on “its knowledge”, I find that quite ironic!

by seattlekat on Apr 16, 2009 6:17 PM EDT reply actions

Misspellings ...

… are to be forgiven in the comments. If I or Ken or BigSkyCat misspell something, you may take us to task, but we don’t dwell on spelling errors in the comments, as they can’t be edited.

I have never understood the obsession some people have with name spelling. I have my name misspelled 50% of the time, and it has never caused me a moment’s consternation. Spelling errors are not a measure of fan quality in my opinion.
