I don't want to take away from Tru's traffic,
but the game is on TV in Louisville on Wave3.
NOT in HD, unfortunately.

Probably having the best game so far.
Also, the IU recruits look really good for the most part. I would expect them to look considerably improved next season.

Since it looks like it's just you and me in here tonight, what's your opinion on the following:
Coach Cal is in Portland (I’m pretty sure) for the Nike event out there. I realize he’s there because of Wall (and maybe the Henrys), but to some extent don’t you think he should be at the Derby classic?
2 signees are playing, one of whom is definitely waffling (Orton), and one of whom has at least expressed 5% doubt (Hood). Do you think Cal not being there affects their thinking?
I’ll follow that with—is Pitino there? Is Crean there?

Yeah, you're probably right.
And I don’t mean to sound like I’m criticizing Cal—the fact of the matter is that both of the kids in Louisville have committed and signed. Getting Wall, et al, is the priority.
Of course, Bledsoe and Dennis are here too.
I have a few more ephemeral hypotheticals if anyone wants to hear them.

OK. My other hypo (sorry-it's rare to damn near have a one-on-one conversation with Tru).
Tru (and uk52, if you’d like to weigh in) – I feel like your feelings on Gillispie at the end of this season mirrored mine. That is—needs more time.
All that being said, and with the assumption that UK handled the Gillispie termination very poorly—if you could go back to mid-March and have the option of keeping Gillispie or seeing him go and getting Cal—what’s your vote?
To answer my own question, I honestly don’t know. I still feel like Gillispie deserved more time, and his termination still doesn’t sit well with me. However, the buzz (on all levels-national, state, my soul) surrounding UK right now is intoxicating and like nothing I’ve experienced since. . .well, I dunno, since I came of drinking age.

I feel the same way as you
I HATE the way that Gillispie got fired so soon, and i still believe that he would have eventually been successful. however, Calipari has gotten me really excited and i believe he will do great things. i struggle with this same question all the time and have as of yet been unable to answer it
by uk52 on Apr 11, 2009 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think ultimatley
that Cal RIGHT NOW is a better coach (substantially) and better recruiter (somewhat) than Gillispie. I think we will have success much faster with Cal, and I think that Cal will be very successful here in the long term.
I also think Gillispie would have become a great coach, continued to be a strong recruiter, and eventually would have realized success here. Whether that would have happened will never be known, but I think it goes without saying that he would have had to change his ways in 3 respects—more in game flexibility, better with the media/boosters/etc., better relations to the players.
I honestly believe that if given the choice of losing his job or making those changes, he would have chosen the latter and would have eventually been wildly successful here. It would have taken more time.
So, I still can’t answer that question. I really hope G succeeds wherever he ends up.

I agree.
Siva played a lot better at the McDo game, but he’s going to be a great player.
I think that Mike Marra will be pretty good too—this game isn’t great for him. The announcers said he was a very good PG, but I see him more as a spot up 3 point shooter. I just don’t think he excels in this type of game.
I said it before—I hope we defend the 3 well against Louisville next season. I really don’t want to get burned by that kid.

Hood will be very important to this program.
First and foremost, he will be here at least 3 years I think. He will be the glue and continuity under a coach that brings in one-and-done players. Second, he loves UK, he’s homegrown, and the fans will love him.
Hood has the potential to not only wildly succeed at UK, but to become one of the all-time favorite and loved players, I think.

Big Daddy - Big Baby
Daniel Orton reminds me quite a bit of Glen Davis as a freshman and sophomore at LSU, about an inch taller and 25-30 pounds lighter thus more mobile and an apparent better touch. Hope he turns out as well. Davis playing better and better in for KG, double-double versus Heat.

I read that and was about to respond very off the cuff.
However, after considering, I think you’re right. I always thought Davis could have been much better if he lost some flab and solidified up—Orton is that.

USA 23 World 19
Nike Classic from Portland USA leads by 4 after 1st quarter. Wall looked great early and Cousins ok but has 2 early fouls. Haven’t seen much of Henry. USA having problem versus zone in half court, dominate when they run.
by Wild Weasel on Apr 11, 2009 10:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Wall Real Deal
John Wall is a standout among standouts or, as John Calipari would say, the best of the best. Just had a monster dunk, extreme athleticism and has ball on a string. Henry shot reminds me of Goose Givens except Xavier is bigger. 10-minute quarters, 24-second clock and 5- personal fouls limit.
by Wild Weasel on Apr 11, 2009 10:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
More Wall, More Henry
Remember that Tayshaun Prince dunk in NBA playoffs? John Wall just had one similar a foot above the rim, not bad for a 6-1 guard; and that was followed by a run out left-handed slam! Xavier Henry with 19 points midway through 3rd, hot from 3!
by Wild Weasel on Apr 11, 2009 11:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
70-61 USA
USA up 9 at end of 3 quarters. UK speed at guard is big difference: Wall, McDonald, Avery, Gaddy. World better passers and outside shooters.
by Wild Weasel on Apr 11, 2009 11:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Final World 97-USA 87
Sort of typical USA style versus European/World style: individual athleticism versus teamwork, experience (several pro players) vs first time together, zone vs man, USA had difficult time defending pick and roll. Lost game at FT line (outscored by 17) and on boards: World had 25 offensive rebounds including 6 off missed FT’s.
Wall is as good as advertised. Henry good outside shot will have work to do on DD. Cousins unimpressive with early fouls. USA’s front court terribly outplayed.

Nervous.
I’m nervous about the whole Wall/Bledsoe situation. I want Wall to commit already so that we know if we need to get Bledsoe. Both of these guys look good, but Wall is out of this world. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone his size make the kind of plays that he makes.
