QUICK & DIRTY for those who MISSED the PRESS CONFERENCE
[PARAPHRASES ALL]
Said, “I wanted to be like Kyle Macy back in the day.”
I came in with UMass in ’92 and couldn’t believe the atmosphere in Rupp. That’s when I said, “I want to be the coach here someday.”
When the job was open two years ago, I called my wife every day for six days asking, “Did they call?” But I was her second or third choice, too, and that has worked out okay.
Put to rest absurd rumors about his alleged split with Ricky Pitino, but twice Cal said, “THIS is the Commonwealth’s Team.” The point was well made.
Said Bill Keightly used to hug his neck and treat him as though he were part of the program, and he never understood why, but knows that he signed his contract with UK on the first anniversary of Bill’s passing. Asked whether Jane was present yet.
Told Hurley Rupp that The Old Man was going to roll over in his grave when he sees some of what will go on with the dribble drive offense he is going to bring in.
“Kids want to play for me, but really they want to play the style I play.” Said every guy needs to be able to take his man, or “it will be hard to play him.” Said he will discuss that with each UK player and see where they stand.
Can’t contact anyone who signed with Memphis already per NCAA rules, but it’s too early too see who might change plans and follow him to UK. Certainly did not shut the door on pursuing other Memphis recruits, but said this has been a whirlwind three days, and it’s too early to answer questions about recruits.
Wants to involve all of the great players who have passed through the doors, and had already heard from Rex, Kyle, Tayshaun, Nazr, and others.
Said UK takes care of its own. Noted with amusement that “Richie Farmer used to hit baskets, now he’s going to be governor!”
Said his ancestors on both sides were dirt poor West Virginians who worked in the mines and lived on dandelion soup. Said he’s common folk, too, and that some will wonder whether he can do this job.
Said it’s not about the money, as he would have made more at Memphis “next year” if he had stayed.
Wants to double the number of championship banners (“that’s all they hang here”), but program will be disciplined, and kids will graduate. Turn around will be long term, not next year. We will reach a point where we are contending for the national championship every year. The hard part is winning them.
Seemed genuine when he said this is about the student, whom his staff is here to serve.
Knows he will be second-guessed on every move that doesn’t wind up with a victory, but that no longer bothers him.
Said Cutler (reporter who chased BCG) is crazy, and will not bother him. Singled Cutler out and mocked him somewhat. Said they go way back to when they both had holes in their shoes.
Said he will not open mail that has no return address, but will answer, usually by hand, letters with a return address. (Good luck with that one, Coach!)
This was really a marvelous performance from a guy who said all the right things and dropped names like crazy from Goose Givens and Dan Issel on up the line.

Marvelous Performance
Ricky P on espresso.
If we’re the Roman Empire of college basketball, it’s fitting to have (another) Roman as emperor.
There was a lot of blarney, much wit, kidding around (with Cutler et al), but he was very sincere about all the important things.

You left out............
the part where he said we have a 12 yr old recruit and made his son stand up……………that was pretty darn funny.

Two...
things during this press conference that I didn’t care for:
1) “We’ve already got a commitment from a 12 year old.”
2) “We’re going to have to play some zone, and we will.”
Neiher look that bad typed out, but it was more of how he said these things. They were obviously shots at BG. Those two comments aside, I love this guy. Is there a more charismatic guy coaching today? He can work a room as well as any politician I’ve ever seen.
Favorite quote of the day: “I was on the radar.”
If you didn’t see it, a reporter asked him how he felt about not even being on UK’s radar the last time we did a coaching search and without hesitation he said, “I was on the radar.” Funny stuff.

Good press conference.
I think the twelve-year-old comment was right on target. How could anyone recruit a 7th grader, anyway. BG couldn’t recruit seniors, let along 12-year-olds. He didn’t even play the ones he recruited this year….he played Tubby’s.

I...
don’t think it was in his, or our, best interest to make those comments, right or wrong. BG recruited wonderfully while he was at UK as far as I’m concerned. We’ve already fired him, lets not put the boots to him.
I saw on another board the other day where someone said, “When Calipari wins the championship next year, how long before someone says, "yeah, but he did it with Gillispie’s recruits.”" Not my sentiments, but extremely funny nonetheless.

Oooh! Oooh! (waving raised hand in air)
Can I say it?? lol. ;)
It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

John C was marvelous today.
But, I fully expected him to be. He didn’t fall off any pumpkin truck last night. He’s intelligent, genuine and polished. He’ll be great here at UK. Thank God!!! We are so hungry for a real coach…

Night And Day Compared To The Last 2 Years
UK has one of the best (again).

I LOVE our coach
I have always liked Calipari in the basketball coaching sense, I liked his style of play, liked watching him coach, etc. But I had absolutely NO IDEA he was the super class act that he is. Calipari and UK are a match made in heaven. He truly understands what it means to be a part of the BBN, something that we haven’t had here in a loooong time.
It was so touching to see him get choked up a couple of times when speaking of Memphis. A lot of people can be all talk and say they love their communities and whatnot, but this guy REALLY CARES, and that impressed me so much and made me so proud that he is our basketball coach.
Ironic how he pointed out he waited for 6 days for UK to call after Tubby left; we should’ve had him 2 years ago!!
He’s got a sense of humor too, that definitely doesn’t hurt, “twelve year old, please stand up” haha. I love this guy, absolutely LOVE him and am so proud to have him as our coach.
For those that didn’t get to see it live, here’s the link
